Mirena coil

Hi all, after my treatment (see smear tests) I am wanting to have the Mirena coil fitted. I've read the blurb but don't actually know anyone who has one. Really I'm interested more in the fact that it often changes / stops periods because of the small amount of progesterone in it, and was wondering how this affected people. Also I was told there is a lot of breakthrough bleeding when first inserted? I was under the impression that you can't feel it at all, but wondering if that's true? I've never had a coil fitted before so hope it is the right decision for me. My GP told me it was as affective a contraception method as man having a vascetomy!! Which sounds great for me at the moment... Any comments welcome.

oh dear,my sex drive was crap to begin with.....no wonder though, with flooding out month after month
with a hg count of 8 ,sex was the furthest thing from my mind....
I really am hoping things will get back to normal, now my hg is 14.6 and i have the mirena coil....time will tell
when i was on the combined pill......we were like rabbits!!!!!
so I cant imagine a tiny amount of progesterone will affect me.The pill worked really well for me,until my blood pressure went up!

treelo1999 · 17/01/2008 13:21

Hi Lizzer Just thought I would let you know have had the Mirena coil fitted this morning. Must admit was a little uncomfortable but no where near as bad as I had imagined after reading some of the posts. I did take some Ibuprofen about an hour before I went and so far feel fine. Do have some bleeding from having it put in but thats all. Will let you know how things progress of the next few weeks. (well hopefully!!!)

tanzi · 24/01/2008 21:57

Hi Miserymum, Keep us posted on how things are at the beginning of Feb..

miserymum · 24/01/2008 22:42

Thanks Tanzi
I will def let you know !
I havent had any spotting for about a week, but then yesterday,I had a shooting pain in my right ovary area....and just had a little bleed....it wasnt even a proper bleed......more like browny stuff....sorry to be graphic.
Wonder if this is just the coil settling ?
I,m counting the days down, just to see what happens in a week or so!
My boobs are quite sore, but I always had that before anyway
Treelo1999 keep us updated ! good luck

I would like to just warn anyone thinking of getting the mirena coil to read up on the side effects first as it seems most of them are quite common. I'm having mine removed next week as I've had an unexplained discharge for a whole month and the doctor thinks that the coil has caused either endometriosis or fibroids. I now have to go for an ultrasound to see which one I've got. I was completely healthy before the coil but have become bloaty and swollen around my middle despite being a healthy and energetic person, suffer back pains when I would normally have a period but without the bleeding, spots that I never used to get, lack of libido and thinning hair. My husband even says he can see the difference in me when he looks at photos of me before I had the coil fitted. I know that these things don't suit everyone but as you can see in my case the results are devastating if it doesn't suit you.

Hi everyone
Just an update on my Mirena coil....
got my first period since having it put in.
Very, very light! ..... just using panty liners....
Really hope this is what to expect every month....it seems like a miracle!
It seems to have reduced the flow by 99.9% !!
My blood count is back up to 14.6 and I have more energy.
I played netball last night without worrying about a mishap.......brilliant!

tanzi · 10/02/2008 19:51

Hi Miserymum, Thats great news, the only side effect I find that is when I am due my boobs are really tender, and seem to double in size!! DH loves it! Also I do find that I have a period pain, but no period.. Heaven! A few painkillers and away I go , keep me updated..

miserymum · 22/02/2008 11:44

latest update....
2nd period since having Mirena......a week early, but I,m not bothered.....its just barely there!!!! fantastic! PMT slightly worse, but I gonna start taking Evening Primrose oil.

medsec · 11/03/2008 16:27

I'm having the mirena coil fitted tomorrow and am quite worried about it. I have endometriosis and had surgery last year, but this is the last hope now that it will stop my periods and help my symptoms otherwise its hysterectomy and ovaries out. I've got 2 kids, but wanted to know if the fitting is really painful? Thanks.

beautifuldays · 11/03/2008 16:30

can i ask a question? does hte mirena coil stop you producing eggs or stop fertilised eggs implanting? i'm confused!

Honneybunny · 11/03/2008 18:36

beautifuldays, according to the leaflet mirena works by making the womb less suitable for the egg to implant in, as well as making the environment less healthy for the sperm to live in, plus in some women (but not all) it prevents ovulation.

i had a mirena fitted yesterday, and it was quite painful (according to the gp plus nurse like bad period pain, but i thought it was much worse than that). apparently it varies from woman to woman; i do have a very irritable cervex, so maybe that's why i was in such pain.

today i am having lots of second thoughts about it.... it feels very sore inside, everything is swollen, and low down, cervix is only just about "inside" IYSWIM, and the two little cords are dangling out, so that's quite uncomfortable (they stick into my labia, sorry i know TMI ). something feels quite off, and i think i'll give the clinic a ring to ask if it is suposed to be like that. anyone experience?

medsec · 13/03/2008 12:01

Had Mirena coil fitted yesterday - was really nervous but it was ok. Was painful when they were measuring the distance from cervix to top of womb - that was the worst bit but once through there it was ok and they used local anaesthetic. I did however later feel like I had just had a baby!
Today though everything is fine, just had occasional twinges of pain but nothing more so am hopeful its going to work.

Hi, Ive had my Mirena for about 18 months and its the best thing I ever had done. I've had no periods for about a year, but this week I have had one thats lasted about a week, not heavy, and was wondering if my Mirena had come out? Would I know if it had??

anniebear · 14/03/2008 11:26

I still dont know what to do

am having Minor surgery at the end of the month and the DR suggested having a Mirena at the same time

But I am on AD's and feeling ok at the moment, am so worried it make make me depressed

My periods arent terribly heavy (may 1 day and night) or long lasting

am really worried and cant make up my mind what to do

stefstar · 20/06/2008 07:52

Hi guys!

I thought I would share my mirena story with you.
I had a mirena coil inserted 18 months ago, due to ongoing endometriosis problems -the last resort before having my 3rd operation.

I have a very high pain tolerance but found it to be excruciating when the mirena was inserted. This may be due to the fact that the gyno failed to acknowledge that i have endo - he should have inserted it under general anaesthetic.
I know of others who have had it inserted and experienced only slight discomfort.

If i remember correctly, i had spotting and abdominal pain for about a month afterwards, but my periods never ceased, in fact they lasted a lot longer.

I didn't put on any weight at all, but I have had quite bad PMT (which is not normal for me) and no sex drive since the insertion.
I am tempted to have it removed sometime, although it is so convenient and doesnt cause too much bother.

The biggest thing to bare in mind is that just like the pill, the mirena effects each person differently.

I hope i've been of help guys

zazen · 22/06/2008 23:34

Hi everyone - I've read the entire thread and want to wish everyone well!

I've been recommended a hysterectomy because of heavy bleeding. I'm 40 and I'm finished my family. I have no pathology, no fibroids, no endo, no cysts. I take ponstan 500mg 3Xdaily when I have my periods as the pain is so horrendous. I flood during my periods - have tried the mooncup, tampons, pads and have burst the banks of the all... I feel grumpy and irritable quite a lot as well and am constantly tired - not sure what my iron levels are - I'm taking a mineral and vitamin supplement, marine oils and starflower and extra vitamin B group.

I have a tender womb? and it's tilted backwards, so I get very bad back pain during my periods with the cramping.

Someone else here has a tender womb - and I'm wondering did your gynae give you a reason? Is it adhesions following a cesarean?

And has anyone else got the mirena coil in with a retroverted or tipped womb? Does the coil tend to poke backwards and cause pain IYSWIM?

I've taken the combined pill (Cilest: (ethinylestradiol, norgestimate) ) with no problems and am oestrogen dominated when I'm off the pill. Big hips big boobs, high sex drive and lots of EWCM when ovulating, with mittleschmertz (pain in ovary) when ovulatinig. I took the mini pill Noriday (norethindrone ) for one month when I was breastfeeding but had to stop taking it as I had blinding headaches and very low moods.

My Questions are: do you think I should go ahead with the mirena (Levonorgestrel: or l-norgestrel or D-norgestrel)) coil?
My Gynae has recommended it for me, under general anesthetic after a DnC?

Anyone take Noriday and can't tolerate Mirena.
Anyone take Cilest and can tolerate Mirena?

Thanks in advance

This is an interesting site with hormonal comparisons here

expatinscotland · 22/06/2008 23:38

provided you are not a smoker and do not have medical conditions which contraindict combined pill usage, you can take the combined pill until menopause.

LynetteScavo · 23/06/2008 00:02

zazen, to answer a couple of your questions... I have a "tipped" womb, and have no problems with my Mirena. I use to take Noriday, which I was happy with, and am now happy with my Mirena

zazen · 23/06/2008 01:01

Thanks for the replies,
ExPat I'm reluctant to take the combined pill as I'm 40 and my Dad died of stroke.
I didn't know it was an option for me to take it for the next 10 years or so till menopause. I quite like the combined pill Cilest as my periods are lighter and my moods are more even. However the risks of breast and cervical cancer go up with this? and of Stroke also...

I suppose I was just hoping for an easy answer!

Anyone out there who took Noriday, didn't like it and is fine on the Mirena (Levonorgestrel (or l-norgestrel or D-norgestrel))coil?

you took the POP Cerazette (desogestrel) if I remember? ExPat - did you ever take Noriday (norethisterone)?

I've taken the combined, anti-antrogen Dianette (ethinylestradiol, cyproterone) also - made my boobs huge: C cup to DD and couldn't think about anything other than fluffy kittens!! Came off it and had put on a stone over the year.

I lose weight and my skin clears up on Cilest and Noriday. Anyone similar to me who can tolerate Mirena?

Thanks for the replies!

xlr8 · 23/06/2008 01:57

Haven't read the whole thread but,
I had mine put in under a general, as unfortunately I had to have another procedure at the same time, so I have no idea what it is like. However, since I have had it I have had a very minor bleed for about four days a month, which is great but I do suffer with alittle more PMT than I used to. Overall it's been great though

suzywong · 23/06/2008 02:07

Yeah! 1000th post

in anser to Lizzie OPer

I had mine done in February, I can't feel it, I had a lot of breakthrough spotting and bleeding but now it has settled down and my gussests are spotless

evenmoremiserablethanbefore · 05/07/2008 16:22

Hi again

miserymum is back
just my latest update on the Mirena and its not good news....
after 6 months of bliss.....just spotting...
I got my period this week and it was horrendous.....
flooding,large clots,bigger and more frequent than ever,and back pain,pains in my hips,tops of my legs and my right side again. {had hardly any in the past six months}
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH MY BODY????
message for 'expatinscotland' how have you go on with the Mirena?
....I,m the one with the 'tender womb' and yes,I,ve been told it was because of the birth of my last baby....cesarean....

I,m tempted with the ablation thingie, but am also thinking hysterectomy,if this carries on......
I am so sad,as I have just been given the centre position at netball {my old and favourite position} because my fitness levels are up......blood count 13 !!!
but if my periods are back with a vengeance and my blood count drops as low as it was before..........I can see myself packing netball in.
Has anyone had this sort of setback with the Mirena and then their periods go light again?
perhaps it has shifted a bit.....
Its still there...I,ve had to have a root to put my mind at rest
I,m preying for a miracle
any advice greatly appreciated
