initial tests show he could have cancer of the oesophagus, he is going for more this week

i found out when i was away in thailand, i just got back today

i pretty much know what the outlook is for him if it is the case, but i wondered if anyone has any experience of it

it's such a huge shock, he is only 43

Really sorry to hear this Lou.

I don't want to post something that encourages false hopes, but your xh's symptoms are very like what my mum had when she had a polyp in her throat. She couldn't swallow anything (not even soup in the end... unless it was totally watery) and the slightest bit of 'solids' just got stuck and made her sick (not sure if she vomited blood, though; was too squeamish to ask... sorry). She lost masses of weight (she's only 5'2", but she weighed something like 5.5 stone). It took several attempts to get rid of the thing, but they eventually got it with laser treatment, and she has been fine ever since.

Anyway, I'm no medical expert, so the comparison may be totally out of place. I'll be thinking about you anyway.

Oh Lou Sad

NotQuiteCockney · 22/03/2006 08:21

I'm really sorry to hear this, lou. A friend of mine died of oesophagal cancer, 15 or so years back. Hopefully your xp is earlier on, and there are better options ...

lou33 · 22/03/2006 08:36

thanks everyone

i am going with him this morning for some more tests, fingers crossed

he mentioned he needed a biopsy last night as well, but i forgot to ask when it was happening, too much to talk about

anyway he has agreed to stay with me and not move out for now, i think he realises he isnt well enough to cope atm

edam · 22/03/2006 08:50

I am so sorry. Am hoping very hard for you that the results show there is something that can be done.

Bless you and yours.

Marina · 22/03/2006 08:52

lou, I was chatting to SD about film music yesterday afternoon and meant to ask if she had heard when you would be back. I was so hoping you had a restful, relaxing time while out there and now this potentially awful news about your ex.
I really am so sorry to hear this and hoping against all the odds that he has a polyp.
I know he drinks but does he/has he ever smoked?

lou33 · 22/03/2006 08:58

this year since we split he was smoking 3 packs a day until recently he said

i am angry and devastated at the same time

i know we dont know for sure yet, but i told him months ago to see the gp

I too know someone who has beaten this form of cancer. It was a guy on my course last year.. it spread to his mouth. He was given the choice of never being able speak (orally) again or eat.. he chose to speak so is tube fed at night. He seemed very well though and we only found this out months after meeting him. He is an active guy, who works part time, studies part time and has a wife and teenage kids.

Hoping for positive news xx

bundle · 22/03/2006 11:23

bloody hell lou, how awful for you all, I feel lost for words. xxxx

ggglimpopo · 22/03/2006 11:24

God,Lou. I am so sorry to hear that you are all going through crap again.

I know someone who had cancer of the throat and the initial outlook was bleak, but he survived, stopped drinking and smoking and calmed down his lifestyle big time, and when I left the UK I know he was doing brilliantly, years after the treatment - he was treated very aggressively.

I hope the diagnosis is good (!) - relative, but ykwim - and that things work out.

My dh's partner has cancer, of the liver, lung and colon, and is doing well with his treatment.

Thinking of you and wishing you all the best. Is there anything I can do? You have my msn if you need to rant/talk/offload.

jmg1 · 22/03/2006 11:28

Sorry to hear that lou.

My Mother had cancer of the oesophagus but she also had lung cancer + her gp wouldn't send her to a specialist until 18 months after she went to see him about it in the first place

I have emailed you, but before seeing this thread.

PollyLogos · 22/03/2006 11:34

Sorry to hear this lou. Am thinking of you both this morning.

RnB · 22/03/2006 11:35

Bugsy2 · 22/03/2006 11:47

Heavens Lou - just seen your news. So very sorry. Will be hoping that there is a possibility it is something else & not cancer.
Can't imagine what you must be going through. Will be keeping my fingers crossed for all of you.
