Another shiny thread

Thank you MAS and Kurri. You are lovely. It's trivial in some ways, but also so mindless to have a recognised assessment which they don't even bother to read. Bonkers. DH and I have just downed a bottle of wine and planned a battle line. Not because we think it will achieve anything, more to make us feel better. And Kurri, yes you're right. Of course long term DS will be fine because we'll support him through it all. I just get so cross. I know you get it, as you've been through it all in triplicate already. Just to give one example, but already this term they've moved him down a spelling group to 'help' him. All good as he can't spell and needs to focus on it, but they neglected to talk to him about his dyslexia or the fact it was about that, so he thinks he's been demoted and has got into a state about it. When I told them that at the meeting they were shocked, but surely they should have thought about that. When I suggested that maybe they should have a chat with him, they said 'that's a good idea'. When I asked if maybe he could sit close to the white board, so he's facing not having to twist round, similar. I mean ffs it's not rocket science...!!! There, rant over honest.

Night night all. Sleep well. I am now returning to DH and the wine bottle (and to sharpen my sabre). Grin

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/09/2012 07:34

good heavens- smee I'm aghast at their idiocy - gah.
Ds will be a star despite their not doing much to help , but obviously it's not right.

jchocchip · 25/09/2012 08:04

Morning all. Thanks for all the positive thoughts yesterday.
mas well done at getting work done, hope you are feeling better today.
smee at least they acknowledged your good ideas, sounds like they were not thinking as ds is not causing them problems. Maybe they will now think and read the assessment. Well done on sharpening your sabre, hope you don't need to use it.
dd2 has just left for school, that means I really should be on my way to work, oops, and not lying in bed mning.

amberlight · 25/09/2012 08:24

Smee, that big a discrepancy means there is a specific need and there's good 'case law' now to say that children have to be meeting their best, not 'the class average range'. Get thee to the fine charity IPSEA (googlable) and let them help you bite ankles (figuratively, of course).
Yes, in theory DS gets lots of help at Uni. We'll see. So far not even his specialist equipment has turned up Hmm

Brew all round, I think.

Sometimesiwonder · 25/09/2012 09:40

Angry smee. I agree with the others who have said that, because he is a good little chap, they haven't bothered to notice. That's not good enough of course. There's loads of good advice on here, I see - and he will be absolutely fine with you fighting for him. You really shouldn't have to though.

Amber, I really feel that I will be teaching my grandmother to suck eggs here, but there is lots and lots of great, free, open source stuff to help uni students, and loads of advice available, at JISC Techdis, which you can Google. It's aimed at the universities themselves rather than the individuals, but the info is all there for everyone to see, and if he can make use of the leads it provides, it could help. I am doing some work on the subject at the moment, so I just thought it was worth mentioning. x

Well done on getting through yesterday Jane.

And bloody well done MAS for getting through the work yesterday.

Gigondas · 25/09/2012 09:50

AngryHmm for you smee- I do feel for you and am glad others have practical advice to add .

jchoc am glad yesterday was ok even if service was a bit Hmm.

otm have invited you on fb. How are you doing? Am also pleased you managed to work ok mas.

Arm feeling lot less bruised today which is good and sun is out which makes a pleasant change.

How is decorating going topsy ? Have you refrained from doing a mural tribute to Tom jones or Sargent Hathaway?

gracie how are you?

Waves to kurri amber (grr but no shock about useless uni and your ds), sometimes and anyone else I missed.

gig reinvite me - i haven't had anything yet. did you spell my sill name right?

smee · 25/09/2012 10:03

Thanks for being cross for me. Amber I will check out that link. I have sent DS to school with instructions to bite at least two children and a teacher. Grin Okay that was a joke....

Kurri, yes if you would send that book I'd be ever so grateful. Will pm you my address.

MAS, how are the glands? Still raised?? Hope not sore too. You need another of those medicinal costa coffees. Smile

Who's up to what today then?? I'm taking Miss Paranoia to meet my surgeon later. Am hoping I can leave her there. Hmm

topsyturner · 25/09/2012 10:21

Morning All

Smee I share the general anger , and also encourage you DS to bite to fight them and make them do what they should .
My friend has a DS with quite severe hearing problems but as his "levels" haven't slipped the school won't give him any help !
Madness when a child is punished for being smart eh ?

Gigs now there's an idea ...

Have finished undercoating the woodwork .
Am now having a sit down with boiled egg and toast .

Who's making the coffee ?

Gigondas · 25/09/2012 10:28

Got invite now otm?

Brew for you.

I will fight miss paranoia for you while you nip into surgeon smee- I will get mini gig to sick on her if you like .

I wouldn't rush back to work topsy as a good workman needs a break.

OP posts:
smee · 25/09/2012 10:30

Ooh yes please, Gig. Tell mini-Gig to do her worst. Grin

overthemill · 25/09/2012 10:32

g yes! hurray i can see your gorgeous babies now.

have to brave big outside world as dd is having rotten period pains and vomiting from pain so have to get her to the GP. hope i can keep the car straight, still a little wobbly. oh well it'll be good for me, not having been outside since wednesday!

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/09/2012 11:08

oh poor dd otm - horrid.
Good luck with surgeon today smee - will be with you in spirit and there'll be fbs for your return.
Can't ever tell when things are ok with me or not- am hopeless at recognising things- feel ok really..am going to walk to post office soon and I have a thing to finish (my spread in my agent's fancy new publicity book) and a card to start.

smee · 25/09/2012 11:37

OTM, poor DD, but poor you too. Hope you get there in one piece.

MAS, sounds good that you're busy and a bit of a stroll is always sanity inducing I think.

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/09/2012 13:15

can I ask a frivolous question (bcn is off until next Tuesday) - would it be ok to get my hair coloured (hi lights,or low lights) ? it would cheer me up I'm sure -they use Aveda at my hairdressers which is planty but obviously has chemicals in it too)

Gigondas · 25/09/2012 13:35

Might be issue about skin being more sensitive? If no luck here bet if you rang macmillan they would know Grin.

graciesmall09 · 25/09/2012 13:40

Am really cross on your behalf smee. It makes me so cross that well behaved children are penalised even if they need a little help. My middle son struggles a bit especially with spellings and in Year 5 his reading age was 2 years behind. I asked the teacher was he not showing signs of dyslexia and her answer 'well I'm not allowed to answer that'. I asked could he have some extra help - no because like your son he wasn't scoring low enough. sorry I don't have any constructive advice.

otm poor DD. Hope your GP can help, she must be miserable.

topsy hope you haven't had any other spillages. We have the decorator here painting the hall, stairs and landing and DD room. We ordered the carpet this morning but paint is playing havoc with my chest.

Feeling ok today, finally collecting new car this afternoon so hopefully that will cheer me up a bit.

gigs glad you arm feeling a little better. NI could definitely do with some sun it has been raining non-stop since yesterday. My garden is like a swamp.

Sorry mas don't know your answer, would your hairdresser know? I know my hairdresser has told me when my hair grows back if I tell him what dye I am allowed to use he will get it for me.

Waving to everyone else ned, sometimes, amber, invicta , kurri and hope I haven't missed anyone. Glad funeral went as well as can be expected jchoc

KurriKurri · 25/09/2012 13:50

Afternoon all, good luck at surgeons Smee, and to DS in his biting activities Grin - will send the book to you asap.

Poor DD OTM - period pains can be so awful, - I hope the doc. an give her something - I used to get something called ponstan from the doc (many moons ago when I had periods!) - not sure what the proper name is - something like mefaclenic something or another I think (technical terms abound!) anyway it helped, so I'm sure there will be something they can do for her.

amber - I hope your DS gets all the support he needs, - but it's good that he is feeling more settled now, and discovering all the important Uni stuff Grin

MAS - I'm not sure about hair colouring, I had a feeling you weren't supposed to have it, but don't take my word for that, - I'm not sure of the reason though, it might be something to do with sensitive skin, but others will come along with info for you. Maybe if colouring is out you could have a snazzy styling instead - I think anything that makes you feel good is the way to go. Well done for doing some work yesterday.

topsy can you come and paint my DD's room when you've finished? - it is currently being replastered after our roof problems and water getting in etc. - I will supply coffee and cake, and hold the step ladder Grin

Gig - glad you are feeling less bruised. I'm not on facebook so can't see your pics. but I've looked at the ones on your profile and your girls are absolutely gorgeous - take after their Mummy Smile

waving and love to all.

KurriKurri · 25/09/2012 13:53

x-posted gracie - - I'm glad you are feeling a bit better Smile

many apologies if I miss people's posts - my laptop is being a total bastard at the moment - it won't scroll properly, so I get huge jumps from one part of a thread to the next. Most annoying - and it means I miss things, but send my love to all anyway.

Sometimesiwonder · 25/09/2012 15:05

Blush Just had a meeting with a web developer. What i have asked for may cost £20k or even more, so I think I may have to go back to the drawing board Sad

In fact I think I may have to restrict myself entirely to a drawing board, as i reckon I may be able to afford a few crayons Grin

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/09/2012 15:26

feel a bit better after a walk - silly to fret about the hair colour I know, but it's my one real indulgence and would perk me up no end ! will ask nice hairdresser and wait for bcn to get back.
Am sure there must be less costly web thingys sometimes -that sounds v steep.

invicta · 25/09/2012 16:09

Hi All.

Had my first bout of radiotherapy today which wasn't too bad. As it was my first appointment, they had to take lots of measurements etc. All I could think of during the whole procedure was whether my underarms were hairy or not!

Another amusing incident regarding breast cancer happened to me at the weekend. I saw my 18 year old niece. She was a bit put out that I got a tattoo before her!

Hope everyone is fine.

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/09/2012 17:31

well done invicta ! lots of prodding and positioning ahead and strange rads lingo you'll find !

smee · 25/09/2012 17:55

Paranoia poked and put firmly to bed. Phew... just bone exposed after mastectomy. Usually would be covered in skin/ tissue, so that's why it feels so odd. Lovely surgeon and lovely BCN too. So v.lucky to have them. Smile

MAS it's not silly to fret about hair colour. Things like that make a massive difference.

Sometimes what we're you planning?? Must have been epic. I'll do some colouring in for you. Pass the crayons. Smile

Invicta that's great that you're through the first. How many are you having? I can't remember.

Gig, glad the bruising's better now.

Gracie, how's the car??? Hope it zooms and has lifted you xx

Right, better cook DS something before he starts eating the sofa. Grin

graciesmall09 · 25/09/2012 18:05

So glad your appointment went well smee.

Car is fab. DH was laughing because I have issued a strict no eating in my car rule as the seats are cream Grin.

invicta glad radiotherapy went well. I start mine on Monday for 5 weeks.

Wow sometimes that is some price. Hope you can get a more competitive cost.

Waves at kurri my laptop is still being a complete pain unpredictable even after a strint in laptop hospital. Seemingly I had 5 viruses on it so much for Norton Antivirus.
