I like the sound of polenta muffins Gig - do you just substitute polenta for some of the flour? I've had polenta cake before and it was lovely.
I'm feeling a bit peckish now Grin

Good luck for later on Smee - make sure you locate where the loos are so you can dash for them as soon as your scan is finished!

(I'm glad hedgehog is getting the vote, - we have to give our pictures titles - and I think I'm just going to go with 'Fat Hedgehog' Grin)

I used to have some cast iron pots and pans years ago - it was a two handed job to get them onto the hob!

Sometimesiwonder · 08/08/2012 14:37

Everything crossed (esp legs) for your scan thing, Smee make sure you wear trainers and have a route to the loo planned for after.

I think 'fat hedgehog'. too, KK.

Was v abstemious at lunch - tuna melt sandwich and salad and fizzy water

poor friend has just canceled horse veterinary insurance after many years with NO claims, to save money. Now it turns out her horse has a highly infectious disease and so on top of her own vast bill, the whole yard has to be tested - and she's not sure if she is going to be expected to pay for all of it Shock Sad

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/08/2012 16:44

oh no about horse- that sounds expensive.
I use flour and polenta in my cake, but used gluten free flour as I was making it for meditation day and knew that there were some gluten intolerant people there..anyway, makes a good cake ! The polenta has a really nice texture. A friend made same cake with polenta and mashed potato instead of flour and it was heavenly.

Gigondas · 08/08/2012 17:25

Polenta muffins baking but they do have a nice crunch.
that is so sad about horse
smee sending cross your legs vibes.

Anyone got any good tips for anaemia? It seems to be my biggest issue so trying to find right things to eat.

OP posts:
smee · 08/08/2012 17:41

Polenta muffins are something I've never had, but sound mmm.. Smile You need beetroot and kale, Gigs though it really might be worth taking a supplement with high iron. You'd have to check with your unit, but it's hard to replace the iron once it's gone. Anaemia's horrid.

Bugger about the horse, Sometimes. Trivial in comparison, but I was looking at our cat insurance earlier, which is £19 a month. We've never claimed and he's 4 now, so that's not far short of £1000..! He's never had anything wrong with him; I just know if I stopped paying he'd get ill. Hmm

Glugging just begun here. I already want to wee and have only downed one glass.. Shock

Gigondas · 08/08/2012 17:42

Think of deserts smee - nice dry deserts

OP posts:
graciesmall09 · 08/08/2012 17:54

Flip me smee that cat insurance is expensive. I pay £15 per month for a almost 3 year old labrador. Our policy has been cheaper each year and is a for life policy and we claimed when he was only 6 months old as the stupid fool ate a stone which lodged in his stomach - £800 they paid out.

That is awful about the horse sometimes. I could never risk being without insurance as I just couldn't afford a large bill.

gigs when my DGD had lung cancer and had awful anaemia the hospital used to give him a 'baby' guinness each day. You know the little glass tubby bottles. Have no idea why as I wouldn't imagine there is any iron in it. What about liver or the Spatone drink but you would need to check with you onc that it is ok with chemo?

I am feeling so much better today, nearly feel back to normal.

Wonder did baskets plumber turn up?

Did bollocks every come back to this thread? I feel as if I have missed lots of posts.

graciesmall09 · 08/08/2012 17:56

Excuse the typos - I fear chemo has taken away my ability to type and spell.

Gigondas · 08/08/2012 17:57

Have got some iron tonic but not sure allowed it- they said I could go to gp and get their iron tablets but they are horribly constipating so It's kale and beetroot for me.

bollocks didn't come back and snoopy hasnt been around. I was also sort of assuming people were dipping in and out cos of holidays.

OP posts:
KurriotsOfFire · 08/08/2012 18:16

Gigs - I was also told to drink Guinness or any kind of stout, by my GP (but this was during my first pregnancy Hmm 27 years ago)

Also if you find iron tablets hard to stomach, they can give it to you in liquid form - a bit easier on the tum (it's actually what they give children who need it, but it's better than no supplement if you find the tabs hard) or you can actually have an injection - my DSIS used to have them when she was very anaemic once (although iirc it is a big old jab in the bum and leaves quite a bruise!). I had a feeling that some kind of dried fruit has quite high iron - prunes maybe? I'll look it up for you.

I think I spotted Bollocks on another thread, - so I'm hoping that means she is OK.

Poor friend with her horse Sometimes - I bet the bills are huge Sad. i wish we'd got insurance for our dog - she's had quite a few things wrong over the years and had 3 ops. - but then again she's 15 so the premiums would have added up to quite a bit.

KurriotsOfFire · 08/08/2012 18:19

yes - dried prunes, dried apricots and raisins all supposed to be good, and the very dark kind of chocolate - with high cocoa.

Gigondas · 08/08/2012 19:09

Have got lots of dried fruit in so will stock up on that.

Topsy (and mas who I know likes a bit of Gallic singing) , I have found some euro orange [[

survived first day of chemo - what a long day! Left home at 6.30 am and got back about 5. Nearly fainted but didn't! Thought I'd wet myself but hadn't (strangest sensation when I had the dye put in for CT scan...) - I think this is a bit like pregnancy/childbirth but without the little bundle at the end! All the humiliation and none of the joy :D
thanks to all and hugs back - off to do a wee and check the strange colour...

graciesmall09 · 08/08/2012 19:42

Wow overthemill what a long day. You must be exhausted. It is a really strange sensation isn't it. Thankfully the radiographer had warned me. Hope you get a restful night.

Dare I click gigs dodgy link???

topsyturner · 08/08/2012 19:44

Well done Over , first one done !

Gigs if you take an iron supplement you need to combine it with vit c (a glass of oj will do) , as your body will just excrete the excess iron without it .

Dr Topsy , MD Uni of Google , ER , Grays Anatomy Esq

Gigondas · 08/08/2012 19:44

Oh did they not warn you about ct scan dye? It is most unpleasant and can give you a headache so rest up and drink lots of water but glad you have done it overthemill

Yes am on the oj to helpZ

OP posts:
KurriotsOfFire · 08/08/2012 19:46

Oh yes - I'd forgotten the 'I've wet myself' sensation at ct scans overthemill.

I'm glad you've got through that first one, - its not fun, but its doable, you just have to sort of plod on through it all, and mentally mark them off when they are done. Take things easy - good tip I found was to keep a note of any symptoms and side effects you have then you can let them know at the hospital and they can give you anything you might need to deal with them.

Gig - why did that porn star moustache, open necked shirt and cravat look ever go out of fashion ?????? Good song though Grin

KurriotsOfFire · 08/08/2012 19:48

I hope they didn't keep poor Smee hanging around waiting for her scan.

Gigondas · 08/08/2012 19:49

I have no idea kurriot and to be so good at singing and Dancing too Grin

OP posts:
graciesmall09 · 08/08/2012 20:01

Nice scarf/cravat. I thought it was a very large tie at first. How on earth could he think for one minute that dancing was a good idea?

mas love the cards. I definitely would like one. I will email you tomorrow.

topsyturner · 08/08/2012 20:01

Yes , am currently doing a Masters in Male French Swimmers - Ology ...

Baskets45 · 08/08/2012 20:28

Thanks for asking, gracie. Boiler fixed today at lunchtime. AT LAST. Yay. Nobody came yesterday. Today's hero plumber isn't the one who was asked to come y'day. Such a relief and only a small part needed, a new thermacouple?? so allegedly only £40-50ish. Yesterday was bit of an awful day for various reason, incl lack of hot water of course - i was sorely tempted to leave home :-)). But onward and upward, as they say.

Glad you've pickd up again, gracie, despite a busy day of rushing around.

Special good wishes to Overthemill for start of chemo. Hope it isn't too dreadful. I'm an interloper here, have not had chemo, so no personal experience.

Spatone is one of the best for your guts - iron tabs seem to be awful for constipation/diarrhoea. You've been preg recently, Gig. If something worked for you then for anaemia, chances are it would be okay now too. Certain dried fruits better than others - think red and brown ones best, like figs, prunes, apricots??

Hope Smee okay. Not nice having to drink so much and hang onto it for scan. I embarrassed myself at an antenatal clinic once (about 15 yrs ago - so not yesterday!), having to drink and then wait ages, then i cried hysterically because of the delay as I thought I'd pee myself. Ended up they said I could empty bladder and then do a transvag scan for which you don't need full bladder in early preg. Ho hum.
