Drugs. Which have you tried?

Everyone's talking about drugs this morning.

These days I'm a regular user of caffeine and alcohol.

I used to be T Total and caffeine-free in the nineties but I did enjoy cannabis regularly and ecstasy and acid less regularly.

I can't imagine taking those these days (with the possible exception of the odd spliff Wink, because I'm too busy with the kids and can't afford to step out of the real world these days.
I also wonder how I'll feel if and when my kids decide to experiment.

How about you?

I am currently a sugar addict - drank quite a lot from age 18 to 20 and once tried cannabis but ended up throwing up and becoming very paranoid - never touched it ever again or tried anything else! Too frightened!

Piffle · 01/03/2006 10:28

Dabbled at secondary school age 14/15 with smoking, cannbis and upper pills. And alcohol.
Still stayed in school and was a good girl, no shagging around no criminal behavious :)
Tried cocaine once at a praty I was 15 and should have known better - I never believed it as real coke.
It was horrendous, I have never been so scared in all my life, thank god the chap with me was decent and got me home and watched me.
I've recently kicked booze into touch after getting a little too regular with intake.
I'm pretty toxin free now, not smoked in 6 years. No drugs in a decade or more.
I'm going to be relaxed - not about smoking though - if he smokes I'll go ballistic, he is adamant non smoker now and his friends are trying it and he has statyed away from them he is that anti smoking.
Cannbis... mmmmm hard to say... rather he experiemented in safety of home if he wanted to try it
But saying that...
Hmmmm

Enid · 01/03/2006 10:29

darent say on here Wink

Enid · 01/03/2006 10:30

I had an, ahem, experimental stage lets leave it at that

butty · 01/03/2006 10:31

A bit like yourself spidermama!!!!

was a regular user of drugs from 14 to 18 until was addicted to phett and taken into hospital after a 6 month binge of which could have killed meShock

Since had kids, i like a drink and a smoke now and then, but nothing else.

When it comes to the kids getting older, i dont really know what i would think as when my parents rammed it down my throat about how bad it was, it made me do it more!!!

I suppose it depends on the drugs and their means for using them, but hopefully got roughly 10 years before i cross that bridge, so a long time to do a plan of actionGrin

Tried smoking once or twice when a teenager but it made me feel sick.

Have never taken any illegal drugs.

Do drink alcohol, but not excessively.

Drink coffee.

cathyspam · 01/03/2006 10:33

Piffle - both my brothers started smoking cigrettes after smoking cannabis I think as an 'acceptable' daytime replacement.

I know what you mean Spidermama. I really wonder what I am going to tell my daughter-- would be a complete hypocrite if i told her that they were all bad... But if I tell her my true experiences (all in the past now, but still a major part of my teens/twenties) I would be basically be promoting their use!
She's only 6 so have another few years to ponder...

PiccadillyCircus · 01/03/2006 10:38

Haven't ever smoked.

Haven't ever taken any illegal drugs.

Don't drink coffee.

But do consume rather too many sweets and cans of Coke.

And do drink some alcohol. But not very much.

My misspent youth wasn't misspent enough Smile.

CountessDracula · 01/03/2006 10:38

but kama what will you do if they are?

spidermama · 01/03/2006 10:39

Well done kama on your journey. You had it tough then.

As for my kids though, I want to give them as much information as possible I think. I'd rather they were open about it and I think an outright ban would drive them underground so I hope to keep a dialogue going about it.

It's easy to say now of course. My eldest is 7.

Cannabis. Not for years. Not that bothered really. At uni, the people who were quietly into drugs seemed quite cool but strung-out. Most of the others were really loud and proud about their experimentation, which I always thought was naff.

spidermama · 01/03/2006 10:40

Picadillycircus .... are you Sandra Dee? Wink

must add never when children around .
before i had dd1 (i was 15) i was extremely stupid and used to inhale aerosol from any thing i could find.
paints a really bad picture doesnt it Blush
now i dont do anything and havent for about 7 years. hardly drink coffee and rarely go out to drink alcohol may have a bottle of wine once every 3 monthsSmile
i do smoke though Blush (ciggarettes)

muma3 · 01/03/2006 10:47

was an experimental stage between 13 and 16 i think .
i have found this really hard to admit btw. brought back bad memories . was a horrible time in my life then Sad

spidermama · 01/03/2006 10:52

muma3 that has reminded me that my friend and I tried sniffing Lady Esquire when we were about 14. I don't think it did much apart from making us dizzy. Very scarey really.

This is why I think education is key. I want to give my kids the tools to make real choices. If you just say 'all drugs are really bad' they won't believe you. I want to be able to say true stuff about the damage, but about the desirabe effects too so they can understand why people do it and so they know I understand the issues and don't just condemn.

It's like with sugar, I don't just say 'It's really bad for you' because I know they'll eat it anyway. So I say, 'I understand it tastes nice and sometimes it gives you a boost of energy but it doesn't nourish you and it can make you want more and more and more ... until you feel sick. That's when it has poisoned you' etc,.

Also my BIL used to sniff glue. He says it gave him some of the best hallucinations he has ever had. Shock But obviously he got really ill and spotty too.

At university, I tried pretty much everything except heroin & LSD. Cannabis, coke, poppers, ecstacy, magic mushrooms (whatever they were), smoking, drinking.
Obviously don't have an addictive personality as I barely even drink now!
My parents were really strict and would have been horrified and probably sent me to a nunnery if they knew what I'd done. Don't honestly think its going to make much difference if you are strict or not!

Hayls · 01/03/2006 11:16

I had a bit of a sheltered upbringing- never taken any illegal drugs or smoked. I drank socially from about 16 to 21 (i.e binge nights out) then the occasional drink but since falling pg with dd (now 2yo) I haven't really had any alcohol ( I think I've had 2 glasses of wine). Also drink decaff tea and no fizzy drinks (although do eat chocolate).
I wouldn't necessarily say it was a 'good' thing for me as I was completely naive and I worry that I won't recognise signs etc with dd and be unable to give her first hand advice. However I am a youth/support worker now and have done lots of drug training so I know a bit more than I used to, which will hopefully help me/dd. Dh is more knowledgable than me through a misspent youth so between us we will hopefully know how to deal with any potential situations.

GDG · 01/03/2006 11:17

None at all. Never even smoked cigarettes. Don't drink much either.
