And I'm really really scared.

Hi OP, I had meningitis when I was a teen, I had a few memory issues but other than that and being knackered for a few months afterwards, I was fine. The fact that it was diagnosed very quickly stands her in good stead but there is nothing you can do to predict outcomes because it's her immune system which is under attack. Hopefully the meds will sort it and in three days she'll start to come out of it. A mum at our school caught it a few months ago and does have permanent hearing loss but the difference was it took five days to get diagnosed so the virus had a good go before it started getting beaten with the antibiotic stick!

I hope she is fine. Most kids are fine. It's a horrible disease. :(

DD2 had meningitis as a newborn (viral) - it is a hideously scary word, but B is in the right place and getting meds and they know what they are doing.

My DD didn't end up with any subsequent hearing or other issues, but it was a very long wait - 'We'll just have to wait and see if she hits her milestones' said the discharge doctor blithely.

Thinking of you and your little girl, if it was picked up quickly she will have a good chance of being ok and having no after effects.

My ds had meningitis two years ago when he was 8 months old, he was in hospital for 10 days but it took him a month or two to get back to full health. His was diagnosed within 24 hours of being really poorly and he was pumped full of ABs so I think this probably helped in him getting through the worst of it quite quickly. He is now nearly three and had no after effects, his hearing is fine and although at the time I think it put his development back by a few months I think that was due to being very ill (and another condition they discovered whilst he was ill that otherwise we wouldn't have known about) and not specifically the meningitis and he has now caught up. The drs did say the after effects can present later but two yrs down the line he is not showing any signs of anything unusual. He does seem to get every bug under the sun, not sure if that is because he was so ill then!

If you want to PM me to ask any questions or vent or anything then else then pls do.

Take care and try and get as much rest as u can x

Oh goodness. More good wishes and positive vibes coming your way from me xx

oricella · 10/06/2012 08:30

hugs OP - I've been where you are now and it's a horrible place to be; my DD2 is a survivor of pneumococcal meningitis - she was just 7 weeks and for the first days we weren't even sure she was going to make it.

I well remember the feelings of panic, once we knew she would at least pull through, of not knowing what to expect in the future. We're now 3 years on and we are incredibly thankful that there has been no permanent damage (she was closely followed for hearing loss, and for a while seemed to drag her left arm) or anything in her development that could be attributed to the meningitis (apart from her demonstrating all the fighting spirit that it took to fight of the disease). But you know what, should her arm have stayed floppy, or her hearing been lost -she'd still be our little girl and perfect at that. Nothing would ever change that

The not knowing is hard and will probably be hard for months and years to come: it's still such early days for you all... take things a day at a time, don't look too far ahead, accept any offer of help going, and do get out of hospital to get some fresh air... will be thinking of you all
