This is thread 3 of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

Here are the previous threads:

Info from BBC Health

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

great news pombear ..... hope your recovery carries on in the same positive vein !

Its weird how different hospitals vary ........ wondering about mine as did not get any physio advice or scan. Some folk get one but not the other etc

Huffy, great to hear you sounding so positive! Look after yourself and don't do too much. sounds like a good result!
Leonie, really sorry to hear about the rect/ cyst AND anal fissures...they are SO painful. I found that it helped to use a little KY before pooing to protect the area and I still do, I keep it by the loo so I don't forget.
Rectogel works wonders but you get a massive headache with it. It brings oxygen to an oxygen deprived area to help with healing but opens up all your veins at the same time so you get a corker. I Used to take paracetomol before using it. Also very soft wipes helped to give the area a bit of TLC. Hope you get some relief.
Xxx

So is that a test to see what they do next? Are they planning to do the prolapse repairs as well.

Leonie - I hope you get some answers. It sounds good that it's a multi-disc team as that way someone has to find an answer!

How are you ladies?

Went out to the park yesterday. Too much walking for me so have been doing nothing all day today. Felt a stitch go this evening Shock

HuggyPomBear · 22/04/2012 21:37

What did that feel likeBen? I know exactly what you mean now when you say how easy it is to overdo it. Legs and arms working fine....I MUST learn that I can do something but its not the right thing to do for recovery! What's really annoying me is I think my throat got scratched during the GA and its making me cough which is the last thing I want!

Littlefish · 22/04/2012 21:54

My surgery is tomorrow. I'm feeling very anxious tonight and have been snappy with dd and dh Sad

I seem to be taking a silly amount of stuff with me, but I would rather take too much, than not have a clean nightie when I want one, or something like that.

Just lost a long (and moany) post so will just say.....

Thinking of you Littlefish. Smile

jackie62 · 23/04/2012 00:14

Good luck, little fish! Xx

Ben10NeverAgain · 23/04/2012 07:10

Good luck Littlefish :)

The stitch going felt like someone was pulling a hair out for about 10 seconds and then it went. Not too bad but just out of the blue when I was sitting down!

Thinking of you Littlefish, all the best x

HuggyPomBear · 23/04/2012 09:34

Good luck Littlefish! I too went with too much (then couldn't access it as the nurses left it too far from my bed!). But better safe than sorry.

Thanks for the info Ben. I have woken up this morning more achy than usual. Normally I've been waking relatively pain free.

Littlefish · 23/04/2012 10:55

Thanks ladies. I hope to be home on Thursday, so will update you all when I get back.

Ben10 - look after those stitches!

Huffy - good point about having stuff within reach!

3isthemagicnumber · 23/04/2012 13:09

Hello all.
Firstly thank you ,thank you ,so much for such an informative and honest thread.I have been reading through them all and really have gleaned so much.
Just wondering if I can jump in and join too ? steps tentavily forward rather than jumping-those days are gone
I am currently mid consultation process. Have found out I have a cystocele (grade 2/3). Rectocel grade 1 and uterine prolapse (grade1).Have just had a womb scan and a bladder function test and am now waiting to see consultant again post these tests.Currently torn between hoping the tests went well and thus no surgery, and worrying I've done too well in tests so no surgery and possibility of feeling this forever. No pleasing some eh ?Grin
Does it sound to you, based on prolapse gradings only that surgey will be likely ?Have unsuccessfully been through physio etc.....
Oh, am 37 and have had 3 rather large dc and blame them entirely Grin
also best wishes of a speedy recovery to those currently waiting /inor over surgical phase..

wouldratherbeskiing · 23/04/2012 13:23

Littlefish - I found it useful to have my toothbrush and paste separate from my wash bag and within reach - nurses can then give you a bowl and you can clean your teeth whilst bed bound. Wet wipes should also handy to wipe hands and face. I had magazine, book, glasses, mobile to hand - and they were all I needed and in any event I could not get out of bed to rummage in the bedside cabinet until the day I went home!

Fengirl1 - so frustrating to lose a long post - if you feel like it try again and post all the moans you like. I started the day having a moan with a friend and felt much better :)

Ben10 - I lost a stitch last week. No sensation but was shocked at the size of it.

Leonie - phew you seem to have been very patient - good luck.

I'm nearly 6 weeks post op for rectocele and felt better last week than this. Have been really good and not overdoing things so wonder if the pulling sensation down below is the scar tissue forming. I have pressure and pulsing in my bottom. I am not taking any pain relief. I am worried the small cystele they reported has got bigger and have pushed for a post-op check. This is Thursday and Occ Health phone appointment from work on Friday. Onwards and upwards and a big hug to you all.

I had my surgery 4 weeks ago today. I am feeling much better. Prolapse symptoms have all gone. I am taking no meds. I just have a bad back and am v tired but then I had an infection.

Looking back it was definitely right to have the surgery. I can poo straight Grin and don't have to help it along anymore.

3isthemagicnumber · 23/04/2012 14:36

Thanks for the replys and welcome
@Ben-glad you are starting to feel better and is heartening to hear that despite your added complication of infection you still feel it was the right choice
@Footle..thought it might be a bit much to ask for answers but could only try Grin .The scan was to determine if I could avoid hysterectomy as that is what I am hoping.Just not ready if that makes sense, despite a 'complete'family...Also if your still going at 114 , I will have some of what you have had Grin.
Am very lucky that my Dh works private health policy covers me so , at my gps suggestion, invoked it and am now under the care of the consultant referred to (I've found out through the other test I've had ) as the big boss lady so hopefully will be in good hands.
Thanks again and big well wishes to you all
