This is thread 3 of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

Here are the previous threads:

Info from BBC Health

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

Thanks Ben10

Yes that is what I have got :( so how the hell did the gynae say I didnt. The thing is I can push mine up and it will stay roughly where I push it to, but lowers when I strain. And can you have a cystocele and not have wee problems. I did tell the gynae that I had no problems other than sometimes not feeling as if it had fully emptied, but that I now know to sit and wait and then a bit more comes out, so it wasnt really a problem. Oh I dont know, I am now worried about mentioning it, because he surely isnt going to admit to being wrong, is he.

Forgot it was easter, hope the kids have got me an easter egg :) but I doubt it as they never have in the past lol anyway happy easter to you all xx

:( Tink - BTW did you like my graphic image Grin

I didn't have an wee problems apart from a slow flow. He said that my rectocele was much worse than the cystocele but that the cystocele would never get better so he'd sort it out while he can.

Could you ask for a second opinion? I have read on here that sometimes the rectocele is masking the cystocele so when one is fixed the other drops down more. Think it was Surewoman that it happened to.

another thing that kinda concerns me is that I was told by cons that would have 6 week post op check but discharge note says 3 months ..... For one thing how do I know when officially fit to return to work. My work involves manual handling so it would be nearer 12 anyway till I can go back ...... but every other source of info says 6 week check ???? ..... anyone else had had such a long period of time for post op check up ?

Report
Ben10NeverAgain · 07/04/2012 14:49

Mine is just under 6 weeks post op. I'd give them a call as it could be the nurse has done the discharge papers incorrectly and you don't want to miss the slot. At least then they'll be able to help you decide when to return.

I'm being amused while resting by people swimming in the Thames during the boat race!

Don't know if anyone's around... This is completely off the topic but NHS website is no help at all. Had endometrial biopsy at end of my last period. This period started two days ago and until last night was v painful. Today it's heavier than ever (heaviest I can remember tbh) and while I know I'm not bleeding to death I'm a bit concerned.... Is it the biopsy? TIA

Sorry I don't know but found this which says:

After the test

You may feel some soreness in your vagina for a day or two. Some vaginal bleeding or discharge is normal for up to a week after a biopsy. You can use a sanitary pad for the bleeding. Do not do strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for one day after your biopsy. Do not have sex, use tampons, or douche until the spotting stops.

Follow any instructions your doctor gave you. Call your doctor if you have:
Heavy vaginal bleeding (more than a normal menstrual period).
A fever.
Belly pain.
Bad-smelling vaginal discharge.

I would at least call the OOH doctors or NHS Direct TBH

This says Even without perforation, there is a small risk of infection and heavy bleeding after an endometrial biopsy. Minor bleeding is normal, but if it lasts more than two days or increases during that time, you should contact your doctor.

This one is from the UK and says the same

Sound like doctor for you Fen (((hugs)))

Feel reassured now - doc called back and said not to worry and not biopsy. Think it's my womb's way of 'going out with a bang' as its probably my last period. The human body is a wonderful thing (sceptical face)....!

Brilliant to see you all on the new site and some new ones too!
I am in limbo at the moment waiting for the MRI scan within 2 weeks. No idea what the outcome will be but hopefully my lovely consultant can sort me for once and for all?! It is either a haemotoma or an ingual hernia, or at least those are the two options at the moment.she seems a bit confused by my symptoms which is never a good sign is it?!
I'm really frustrated at the moment, I should have been back at work ages ago, and any more time off work will be immediately on half pay. Not a brilliant position to be in, but I think I am going in the right direction...
Xxx

fengirl1 · 07/04/2012 21:41

Jackie - cant you go back to work for a day and avoid the totting up of time off? Even half a day might do.... Don't worry about being honourable about it - employers have insurance for this. Do think about it. Just wondering if the crackling noise might be because it is a hernia? Maybe... Who knows? But at least you'll gave some answers soon. Do take someone with you for the MRI if you can - I had one on my head about 18 months ago and I felt very peculiar after. Good luck. X
P.S. Ben10 is very, very norty! Grin

Found you!! I am 3.5 weeks post op for rectocele. Ben10 I have not had back ache but do have a feeling of pressure in my bottom and there?s a pulsing feeling around my tailbone - different feeling to the awful pre-op dragging feeling. I am assuming this is to do with the stitches healing or where I was ?pulled about? during the op.

I wasn?t told to wear my hospital stockings Confused I was told to treat the first two weeks as convalescence and then to start with short walks. Oh and I think they said I could do ?light dusting? after 2 weeks!!!! I started driving this week after checking with my insurance company and being confident I could do an emergency stop. I have days when I feel pretty good and others when I am exhausted. I am being careful as sooooo want these stitches to do their job plus they found a small bulge on the front wall and I am hoping it stays just that. Relieved to be recovering and feel a million times better than before the op so all good.

ABitSnowyOutside ? I used a pessary ring while I waited for the op. A friend had found one really useful. I mentioned this at my first consultation and was told I was a bit young for one (I?m 52!) but as I asked she put one in. A bit of a shock at first but I managed to get this in and out myself around once a week. I only did this because my friend confided she took hers out every night!!! Shock I don?t think this is usual as they say they can stay in place for 6 months. I have to say I found the pessary really helped to alleviate the symptoms of a large rectocele and when I left it out I really noticed the difference.

Sorry to hear about others ?front wall? problems and worries about test results. Thank goodness for this forum where there are such generous people giving support.

I've suddenly had a really bad case if the wobbles abut my up-coming surgery (23rd April). I suddenly feel anxious about everything. Anxious about the general anaesthetic risks, anxious about the operation, anxious about being in pain, anxious about the recovery time, anxious abut how my dd (aged 7) will cope, anxious that the surgery won't work, anxious that my sex life won't improve afterwards..... You get the picture.

I'm having a sacrohysteropexy, a rectocele repair, and possibly cystocele repair too, although my consultant is keen to avoid doing the cystocele repair if he can help it.

Can anyone talk me down from my anxiety?

Fengirl - do you have a date for your op? Loved your pre-op hug symbol.

Tazzle - I've emailed the nurse specialist at the hospital to ask about the 6 week appointment as haven't a date yet. I am worried I may not get to see the consultant who did my op as I was an 'extra' following a cancellation and only met him minutes before I went to theatre. As Ben10 says give them a call.
