This is thread 3 of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

Info from BBC Health

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

Sure, have you seen this? www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-18584968

I seem to remember hearing something about when the NHS was founded in the late 1940s, lots of women started to get prolapses fixed, as before then they would have to pay. It is extremely sad and frightening what is happening to our NHS currently. I have nothing but praise for the people who actually do the health care, from the ward staff to the nurses to the consultants, but nothing but damnation for the managers and administrators, and how successive governments have allowed it to get into the state it is. And I think it's better here in Scotland than England, so really, god help it.

Rant over. Sure, glad it went well for you. Pip - take it easy woman!!

I'm doing ok. Still got the remnants of the post spinal headache, but there's no way I'm going back to hospital for another blood patch. Everything seems to be healing nicely so far (touch wood!). I'm not sure how I'm going to handle another 4 - 5 weeks of 'recuperation' though - I'm so used to being on the go, and I don't deal well with enforced rest. It's not even nice enough to sit out in the garden! I am reading, catching up on loads of stuff on Sky+, and knitting DS a collection of dinosaurs. V different from normal life!!

gingeroots · 26/06/2012 11:23

Ok TVT query here - had a TVT about 10 years ago .
Just wondering how long they " last " ?

I'm not particularly aware of leaking ,tho do a bit ,always use panty liners .

But bothered by persistent pain in my groin for last week ,can't help feeling it's related .

Anyone with any experience or views ?

roseanna1 · 26/06/2012 15:43

Hi Ginger, I'm not an expert by any means but just a thought - is it possible that the leaking is due to something otherthan the tvt tape eg. urge incontinence/ overactive bladder etc as I know they can have similar symptoms?

gingeroots · 26/06/2012 17:16

Thanks for that roseanna - its the groin pain more than the leaking ( which I'd be hard pressed to say had got worse ) that's really worrying me .

surewoman · 26/06/2012 19:08

Oooh, gingeroots - don't like the sound of that as I have just had the tvt put in! I had heard that some women were experiencing erosion after 10 + years and did query it with my consultant before my op. He said that so far the results were very positive and later problems are often due to other prolapses forming. Where is your groin pain - near the site of the tape??? You've made me nervous!!!Hmm

surewoman · 26/06/2012 19:10

Also, with regard to how long they last, there isn't any more data older than 10-15 years yet and it all seems good up to then. I was told that the scar tissue your body builds around the tape pretty much absorbs it so years later you are more or less just using your own tissue rather than the tape for support, if that makes sense??

fengirl1 · 26/06/2012 21:23

Gingeroots - might be worth asking to be referred back and possibly a scan? Would perhaps give you a clue but do go and ask. It's not worth the worry of wondering. What Sure says about the tape being replaced by scar tissue makes a lot of sense (and applies to other repairs too I think). Maybe yours has got a bit carried away? I hope you get some answers soon.

All went well last two days at hosp with dd1 so we now have a bit of a rest from it for the next six weeks. I can't say I'm sorry after spending all day on uncomfortable chairs!

gingeroots · 26/06/2012 22:21

Thanks for your replies .

Sorry surewoman ,I didn't mean to scaremonger .

It's probably unrelated ....but will see GP if it carries on .

fengirl1 · 26/06/2012 22:27

Gingeroots - just occurred to me - do you have any swelling in your groin? I did when I had an abcsess. Have a feel for swollen glands. Perhaps that's what's going on. If it is, see your gp pronto to get to the bottom of it. (I'm not suggesting you have an abcsess but you may have an infection - the swollen glands can be quite painful. I couldn't sleep on my side for three weeks!)

surewoman · 26/06/2012 23:33

wow, I am full of painful gas tonight!!!! I have been put on iron tablets as my HP levels were low after the op and extra doses of lactulose, all resulting in jet black ... !!!!

Fen - glad dd1 is under control and you can concentrate on yourself for a bit. How are your wounds healing?? xx

Gingeroots - keep us posted please XXX (don't worry, not scared!)

fengirl1 · 27/06/2012 14:49

Sure - the only answer is to let rip then! Grin Who knows, your boys may well be impressed - my dd seemed to find it highly amusing (to begin with anyway)..... Lol. Seriously, peppermint tea or similar may help to settle your tum. I'm actually starting to feel much more human now which is nice after all this time. Still got thrush and slight bloody discharge which I'm going to get checked tomorrow IF I can get an appt. Not long now til my checkup anyway. Hope you're being good! Smile

surewoman · 27/06/2012 16:42

Fen - thanks, had forgotten about pepermint tea.... much better.
I'm trying to be really good and stay in bed because the tvt needs time to take hold. Very wierd though as I can only pee leaning far forward but am told this is very normal for the first month or two - it definitely works though as I cleaned my teeth and didn't wet my knickers!! Lol! Hope you get seen tomorrow if only to put your mind at rest xxx

My poor fanjo is black and blue in various sized blotches all over the place - no idea what they used to keep it open whilst operating. I have a long line of stitches from vagina to anus outside and top and bottom inside too. Yep, had a sneaky peak today and felt quite ill afterwards! Grin. Tip for anyone recently post op; drying that area with a cool hairdryer is absolute bliss!

I am absolutely noo good at doing nothing; it is only 5 days post op and I am bored already. I read the telegraph from start to finish, including ads, obituaries, etc. and it only took up an hour!!! I'm halfway reading through last years posts again and it is nice to see how far a lot of women have come and how lives get slowly back to normal. There is hope!!! Smile

Roseanna - how are you doing? x
Pip - you too?
Love to all the others, please keep posting as I need something to read!! Any old update will do Grin xxx

Hi sure, glad you're on the mend, bruises and wind aside lol

Know exactly what you mean about trying to keep still...daytime tv is not what its cracked up to be! My friend recommended reading shades of gray to pass the time, but I reminded her that with that area out of order and feeling stir crazy as it is, adding sexual frustration may not be the way forward lmao

As for me, doing a lot better now, just a little brownish bleeding and chest feels a little tighter again this morning but cant complain. Got some lovely flowers and chocolates delivered from my work colleagues which cheered me up, and am venturing out for lunch with a friend tomorrow (first time out since my haematoma escapades over the weekend!) so am a bit nervous about that, but really looking forward to getting out for a bit too :)

Good luck tomorrow Fen - hope you get some answers xx

3isthemagicnumber · 27/06/2012 20:35

Hi all.
Hope you are all well -Pip, Sure and Roseanna-really pleased to read that things are progressing, and Fen-so lovely to read you are (finally)feeling better-been a long time coming for you, no doubt about that.
Not been on for a few days as was feeling progressively worse -ended up at my lovely, lovely G.Ps with what I thought might be a urine infection but after a full exam, she declared I had an infection behind a stitch, which explained the bleeding too.She also talked of the offensive smell, which to my shame I had noticed but thought it wasn't that offensive really, or at least not offensive enough -whatever I thought that would be! However, 48 hrs into the antibiotics, feeling better already and other things have improved too so I guess she was right Blush
Stay rested, those that should be.
Enjoy your lunch out Roseanna-then get home to put your feet up Smile

fengirl1 · 27/06/2012 20:41

3 - I had BV too. You keep thinking 'maybe it's me' don't you? When I went, the nurse left the door open when she spoke to the dr as it stank so much. It should clear up pretty quickly and if it doesn't, get some 'virginal' cream or gel as these seem to be very effective. Smile

fengirl1 · 27/06/2012 20:43

P.S. 3 - I cried all the way home in the car as I was so embarrassed. Nurses are not the most tactful at times are they?

roseanna1 · 27/06/2012 20:50

Oh 3...the indignities we suffer with all of this without unnecessary tactless people adding to it. Glad you got a diagnosis that is helpful though, and that you're feeling a little better. Sending you hugs xxx

Piplysmelie · 28/06/2012 09:52

Hi all

Glad to read all seems to be good for most or moving in the right direction.

Well into 4th week post op and feel so much better. Generally up and about whilst trying to find some time in the day to rest. Still feel tried but only seem to have one or two painful bits inside that constantly reminds me to slow down!

A few stitches have come out but I think that is ok at this stage

Feeling a bit constrained which is my main problem, I want to be out and about, or riding my bike, my little girl loves to go on the back of it :)

My other problem is trying to be keep constipation at bay. Never suffered with it before and hate it. My top tips are see Michelle keyways videos on how to go to the toilet without straining your pelvic floor, flax seed on cereal, prunes and lots of water.

I am still taking some pain relief (naproxen) doctor said it was a good idea to keep taking it as it reduces the inflammation and it does seem to be helping.

As for the added embrassment nurses and doctors add to this frightful experience that could be a thread all on its own! One nurse said to me while I was lying on the table with legs open and no knickers on "I don't really like to go rummaging down there if I can help it!". I thought oh thank you very much. She also left the curtain open while she went to get gloves. Maybe we should have a competition for the worst one!

Best wishes to all

Pip

roseanna1 · 28/06/2012 10:18

Have a horrible chest infection this morning and coughing loads, which seems to be making the bleeding worse and can feel the strain on the stitches .... fed up with this already and scared its going to do some damage :(

Piplysmelie · 28/06/2012 11:51

Roseanna go to your doctor they can give you something to help with the coughing. Particulary if you explain about the bleeding and stitches.

roseanna1 · 28/06/2012 14:10

Thanks Pip, they said I need to phone in first thing and get an emergency appt so will do that tomorrow morning. Is really weird for me - haven't been near the doctors for years and now feel like a permanent fixture!

Piplysmelie · 28/06/2012 14:23

I know what you mean, never been to my GP so often.

With the coughing I think Michelle kenway has a video on how to cough without hurting your pelvic floor might be worth having a search for it.

Hope you feel better soon.

roseanna1 · 28/06/2012 14:27

Will look it up Pip, thanks (and sorry for being such a moaner today!)

Piplysmelie · 28/06/2012 16:32

No worries :) and anyway your not moaning just expressing your concerns.
