yikes- here we go...

OP posts:
topsyturner · 27/04/2012 18:16

Ned not sure if it's the same for teachers (can't see why it wouldn't be ?) but if an employer already allows someone else in the workforce doing the same job to be part time , then they have to have good justification for turning down anyone else who requests it .
I recommend having an informal chat with your union rep , they will be able to let you know the rules .

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/04/2012 18:24

grrr ned that doesn't sound right Sad

OP posts:
amberlight · 27/04/2012 19:01

Ned, cancer counts as a disability, which means that they must do a proper assessment and have to justify things to a very very high standard of proof indeed. Hope you get somewhere with all of this.

smee · 27/04/2012 19:04

Doesn't sound right to me either, Ned. Definitely talk to union. You can do that discretely if you're worried about it feeding back to the head.

Right, off for a drink with lovely bf. Wishing you all a Wine or two. Smile

NedSchneebly · 27/04/2012 20:09

Thanks for comments everyone Smile I didn't know that it was classed as a disability, but didnt want to have to go in with all guns blazing with unions etc. I guess I might have to. . . Have emailed my GP to get professional view. May make an appointment at some point to discuss what he could put on a sick note / in a letter to support my application.

Am guessing that "you can't go part time cos it's too much of an arse to timetable" is not going to cut it with the big guns?!

KurriKurri · 27/04/2012 20:19

Ned - CAB might be able to advise as well, - I think cancer comes under DDA (Disability discrimination act)

graciesmall09 · 27/04/2012 20:23

Oh ned that's not very fair. Not sure what age your DS is but even besides the bc if your ds is under 6 (I think) your employer has to give a very good reason why they cannot accommodate you for part time hours. Surely if they are going to give part time to others not giving it to you is discrimination.

smee so sad for that man and his wife but lovely that she now has found someone to talk to in you.

Glad you don't have too long to wait until your result topsy. Praying your result is a good one.

I have a really sore throat Sad feels like razor blades when I swallow but I feel well, in fact I felt really well today. My consultant phoned last night so I have to see him the day before my next course and I have a review appointment with the surgeon the same day. I know I'm always asking loads of stupid questions but since my op on the same side just below my collar bone swells slightly and aches. Not sore at all to touch and there isn't any lump just a swelling. Anyone any ideas? Blush

Determined I'm not going to do another mega post.

smee enjoy your drink.

smee · 27/04/2012 23:18

very late now, and just back from lovely night out, but Gracie, the mouth is one of the things chemo gets because it has fast growing cells which is what chemo hits. So if your throat feels like razor blades, though it's horrid, think of it as a good sign if you can, as it means the drugs are working.

Not sure if this will reassure you, but I had rib ache right below the breast with cancer. Was convinced it must be down to secondaries, but have had 2 bone scans and 2 ct scans which all said it wasn't. You're bound to be paranoid, but honestly it's probably not cancer. I think they'd have found it by now if it was. Sleep well. Hope the throat isn't too sore. keep gargling. Am wishing you zzz Smile

topsyturner · 27/04/2012 23:28

Have you been told to keep an eye on your temp gracie ?
You have to be very careful about running a fever during chemo .
Drink plenty of fluids and keep an eye on that temp !

MaryAnnSingleton · 28/04/2012 08:34

good morning all - gracie hope your throat is less razory today
Woken at 6 by Celeste scrabbling at the door then coming in and sitting on my legs purring very loudly.

OP posts:
amberlight · 28/04/2012 09:53

The Disability Discrimination Act is now the Equality Act 2010 and yes, cancer is most definitely covered in there.

Grr re cat, MAS Grin Mine's learned how to open all of our doors. The perils of lever handles!

KurriKurri · 28/04/2012 10:53

gracie - I'm glad you feel a bit better, sore throats are very common during chemo - as the cells on the inside of our throat get killed off. But as topsy says its also possible you are coming down with a sore throat unrelated to chemo - so keep an eye on your temp, and ring the unit if you get a fever.

With regard to the aching shoulder, - I suspect that is something to do with your op. - I had a very sore shoulder while on chemo, and got myself into a flap, and kept poking it (which made it hurt more obv.!) but it was fine. But do ask you onc. when you see him so he can check it and reassure you Smile
Its very natural to feel a it panicky about aches and pains, but you do get lots when you are having chemo.

Well done amber Smile - excellent link for Ned.

Because I've been out for the last couple of days, I feel as if I've missed saying hello to people, - hope everyone is OK today and having a nice relaxing weekend.

Jane - how is you mum now, any improvement? - elderly parents are such a worry, - I hope you are remembering to take care of yourself too Smile

Pouring with rain here again - so nothing exciting planned.

Love to all xx

graciesmall09 · 28/04/2012 12:47

Thanks everyone for the reassurance. My temperature is fine and I feel fine otherwise so must be just a side effect of the chemo. I'm going to mention to the surgeon when I see him next about the pain and swelling as it only started after the op.

Feel sorry for poor DH today. He so wanted to go to the Ulster Rugby match in Dublin today but didn't want to buy tickets just in case I wasn't well and of course typical I feel fine and there are no tickets to be had. So while quite a few of the neighbours are heading off, he is cutting the grass.

DD has 2 dance classes this afternoon so that is my afternoon accounted for.

Have a great night tonight topsy at the show and dinner.

How are all the poorly doggies?

topsyturner · 28/04/2012 14:53

Oh dear , poor gracies DH .
My DH is extremely pissed off upset that none of the tv channels appear to be covering the match .

Just been to the school spring fair . It was rammed . I bought a lovely shrug/throwy thing that I am planning to wear tonight .
Am planning to wear (in no particular order) previously mentioned throw , vest top , skinny jeans , leopard print heels .
And prob some sparkly jewellery to liven it up a bit .
That's ok for the theatre these days isn't it ?

Hope everyone is having a good weekend so far .
Gotta go shower and attempt to do something with my wild hair ...

KurriKurri · 28/04/2012 15:21

That sounds just right for Theatre topsy - you will look very glam Smile Have a good time.

Poor DH gracie, - but at least the grass is getting cut Grin (we haven't been able to do ours for ages because of all the rain, and its getting pretty wild)

Old lady dog is a lot better, she's not shaking her head about any more - still doesn't like me putting her drops in the ear, but puts up with it with just a few grumbles.

Gigondas · 28/04/2012 16:57

topsy that sounds perfect. Have a great night.

Waves to everyone else - gracie hope your throat feeling easier. Does honey (Manuka best) in tea or with lemon help? Manuka also soothing on tummy.

Am going to be lieing on sofa near fbs under my blanket as feeling bit hungover so down and sorry for myself.

topsyturner · 28/04/2012 17:02

Am at theatre .
DH is the only man here so far .
And I am the only woman under 60 ...
First glass of wine has been drunk !

jchocchip · 28/04/2012 17:37

Have a lovely evening topsy! Wine already? I think I need a medicinal glass, will mix it with lemsip...

smee · 28/04/2012 17:37

Ooh, go drink a few more, Topsy. Hope it's fun. Enjoy! Smile

Gracie, hope your throat isn't too sore today.

Rainy, wet and cold here, so we're hunkering down for a nice cosy night in. Waving to all. Hope it's not too wet where you are. x

Gigondas · 28/04/2012 17:43

OP posts:
graciesmall09 · 28/04/2012 19:37

I feel your pain gigs rugby has been on TV here forever all afternoon. Hope you are feeling a bit less hungover down.

Delighted house as Ulster have won. topsy it was on Sky. Hope you are having a great time at the theatre, loving the sound of the leopard print shoes.

My throat isn't too bad I actually think I am just turning into a raving hypochondriac so please feel free to ignore me as I jump from one ailment to another.

kurri glad lady dog feeling better, wonder how Nikki dog is doing?

mas enjoy your dad's concert. Hope you have a fab night.

I'm off to do taxi driver for DS1. He is off to the cinema with a couple of friends so looking forward to sitting down later as been on the go all day.

Hope everyone else ok.

topsyturner · 28/04/2012 22:54

Iiiiiiiiim baaaaaack Grin

Had an early dinner first (again courtesy of the charity , they took 100 people out for dinner and theatre tonight !)
And we sat next to a really nice couple , they made a bee line for us as I seemed to be the only other lady who had brought her DH with her !
Food was a bit meh , but it was free and the company was good .
Then in to the main theatre for the performance . We got really great seats , 4 rows from the front .
Great performance by all , some good humour in it too .
Best actors went to the 2 dogs in the cast in my opinion Grin

Am now settled on my sofa watching Dirty Harry .

Hope you all had a good day , and all the puppies are well today .
Pig/dog sends his slobbers love ...

topsyturner · 28/04/2012 22:56

Ps - my tootsies are killing me from the leopard print heels !

Pps - DH is delighted with the rugby score gracie Grin
