yikes- here we go...

OP posts:
Sometimesiwonder · 27/04/2012 13:38

Have just eaten half an Easter egg. What a waste of all that abstinence I've been doing. Keep me away from the trolley, it'll end in disaster, I know it Sad

NedSchneebly · 27/04/2012 13:39

Afternoon all. Having Brew if anyone fancies?

Am a bit wobbly this afternoon - got to go and meet my boss this afternoon about going back to work (probably September, realistically) but have requested going to 4 days a week or equivalent, and need to discuss how it would work. I think it would be a way of pacing myself, and making myself more reliable, as I might need less time off if I get sick, if I can have 2/3 afternoons off per week to rest etc. Only taught in this school September to Christmas, so don't know the head very well, so have no idea what she will say. She could refuse point blank, and insist I stick to my full time contract. . .Sad I have no idea if she'll go for it. . .

Sorry, haven't really caught up properly, but my head is a bit scrambled today Sad

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/04/2012 13:40

oh smee that story is sad and sweet and as sometimes says 'has meaning'
gig welcome to tattoo club !

OP posts:
smee · 27/04/2012 13:40

Did feel like a rather odd dream in some ways. Very sweet, but yes mighty sad too.

Owl's got a busy day ahead, as apparently it's going to meet every class. I have a feeling DS might come home wanting one as a pet.. Grin

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/04/2012 13:41

sounds a good plan ned fingers crossed that the head agrees to it x

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 27/04/2012 13:42

smee I have just painted an owl !

OP posts:
Gigondas · 27/04/2012 13:44

ned go and check out the reasons you can ask for flex working and how you would answer the objections. The idea of 4 days making you better able to cope and also whether you could flex days might help win them over. Not a teacher but work 4 days and I found pre empting their queries helped my objections.

mas the radiographers were amused at how pleased I was to have a tattoo and that a nearly forty year old child woman would be so excited about it.

Sometimesiwonder · 27/04/2012 13:46

It does seem very dreamlike. I suspect that you and the dinner lady will find meaning in it as time goes on.

I'll bet ds WIlLL want an owl. This what dd wants at the moment:

Ned, that does sound like a plan, I hope the head goes for it.....

smee · 27/04/2012 14:00

x-posted Ned. Hope the Head's sympathetic then. Does sound like a good idea to start part-time. xx

MAS, this owl was huge and shaggy with ears. Not at all sure what type it was. Silky soft too. Beautiful creature. They had a baby one too apparently - I didn't get to see that one as it was having a rest!

Sometimes, aw, I want Cactus Jack too. Will fight your DD for him. Grin
I think the Dinner Lady and I are destined to be friends. Really interesting woman, who I've always liked. Strangely I have made a friend recently of another mum, who's got Cervical Cancer. Funny how bloody cancer can bring people together. Suppose that's something nice to come out of it. Does seem a bit extreme though.

KurriKurri · 27/04/2012 14:08

Hi all. Smile I'm glad the book arrived MAS, I hope DS enjoys it - I'll PM you my address.

If anyone else would like a copy of 'Notes From a Small Island' by Bill Bryson - PM your address - we have several left - so it'll be first come first serve Smile

topsy - thinking about you today sweetie, - candle lit and fingers crossed xx

Smee - what a sweet child - children can sometimes come out with things that go right to the heart of the matter can't they? - Poor lady though, must be very hard Sad

Gig - hope the tummy settles down soon. Is there any kind of cushion that would help so you don't have to much pressure on one side when you sit? - I was thinking that my Dad used to have a sort of thick blow up cushion, because when he lost his mobility he was sitting a lot, and it stopped him getting pressure sores. I'll have a goggle and see if I can show you what I mean.

Lime - I have lost two posts this week - it's always the long ones, filed with words of great wisdom Grin that go isn't it? I hope you are feeling a bit less down now, I do think the weather contributes to general feeling of unwellness and lowered mood - lack of sunlight and all that.

Hooray for delay amber Smile

Ned - good luck for this afternoon, hope your boss is helpful and accomodating - employers are supposed not to discriminate against people with cancer and to try to fit in with their needs. (There is probably a MacMillan or Breast Cancer Care booklet on employment issues)

  • Sometimes, - my friend always makes me laugh, she's mad as a box of frogs. She's an artist and currently arranging an exhibition for local artists, so she sent away to Amazon for some little red sticky backed dots, to mark pictures as sold. But she forgot to look at the size, and when the 'dots' arrived, they were sticky discs about four inches in diameter Grin

Love to everyone.

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/04/2012 14:08

well look how it's brought us all together Grin
Cactus Jack is adorable- my friends in Arizona say he's already been adopted- not surprised- but his poor little spiky face Sad

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/04/2012 14:09

arf @ your friend kk Grin !

OP posts:
NedSchneebly · 27/04/2012 14:18

Have PMed you, kurri Smile

KurriKurri · 27/04/2012 14:19

Oh poor little dog - that must have hurt terribly Sad - nice that he has a new home though.

It will be lovely if you and the dinner lady do become friends Smee. It's odd, but I often think this cancer stuff does tend to make you forget all that very 'English' social reticence and just connect with people who have been through difficult times.

KurriKurri · 27/04/2012 14:21

Ned - will pop a book in the post for you tomorrow Smile

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/04/2012 14:50

kk have found your address in an old pm x

OP posts:
Gigondas · 27/04/2012 15:11

My mum said same thing kk but if you could let me know what your dad used that would be cool.

ned I have employment leaflet if you need it . Kk is right that need to make allowances for you (it seems to work a bit like if you need time etc on mat leave).

smee it does create a sort of union as amazing how many people have it (and survive). My bosses wife had cervical cancer twice and is going strong as mum of 3 lively teenage boys.

topsyturner · 27/04/2012 15:20

Have been back ages , but fell asleep on the sofa !
Why do these scans always exhaust me ? They are not exactly strenuous ?
All went smoothly anyway , and will get the results Monday afternoon .
I just have a feeling about this scan , think its going to be bad news .
Don't know why , just have a feeling .

Smee that is a lovely storey , re you and your dinner lady and the small child .
I love the connections I have made with people who before Cancer would have remained strangers !

KurriKurri · 27/04/2012 15:36

Gig - this is the one my Dad had - I didn't realise it was quite so expensive Shock - but he was loaned it by social services, I wonder if the hospital would be able to loan you something similar?

If you google cushions for pressure sores (or something like that) it comes up with several types, there are air filled ones like the repose one, but also gel cushions and memory foam, which all seem to serve the same purpose.

Definitely worth asking the hospital, they must have things for people who need pressure relief.

smee · 27/04/2012 15:53

Topsy, I bet it's terrifying, but I do remember you expecting bad news at last scan and were pleasantly surprised, so let's hope for that again Will keep a light burning for you all weekend. Smile

Gig, I found the Rads nurses pretty good in terms of helping with all problems. They were different to the people who actually zapped you iyswim. You had to book an appt with them, but could usually see them next day. They had all manner of dressings, creams and things to make life easier. Thanks for story about your bosses wife - will tell my friend. She's got her op next Tuesday, so is a bit nervy to say the least.

Ned, hope your meeting went well. Incredibly stressful things like that.

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/04/2012 17:49

agree with smee- topsy - try not to fret-will send good vibes to you.
Am off to see parents shortly for a Friday evening drink, see what;s happening tomorrow with dad's concert.
gig have emailed you !

OP posts:
Gigondas · 27/04/2012 17:50

topsy I will keep my candle lit. I am dreading my scan follow up too and have no idea when will get results.

kk I am not that shocked by price as my mum found something similar but will defo speak to the nurse as she did seem much more practical than the radiotherapy and drs who are all I have seen so far.

NedSchneebly · 27/04/2012 17:57

Meeting rubbish - basically said she wasn't confident she would be able to accommodate my part time request, as there are a few other part timers, and 2 returners from maternity leave who want to come back part time. She didn't say completely no for definite, but it didn't sound very hopeful. Sad I would have thought I would have the same rights as returners from maternity leave? Don't really have other option, as can't see another school touching me with a barge pole in my current state, and the teaching jobs market round here is dire. She said could have phased return up to half term, but that was for me to negotiate with occupational health. DH seems to think I could just get signed off again at half term if I'm not well enough, but I know what I'm like, I'll just get on with it. I just think it would be so stressful without a definite plan in place and existing one half term to the next. . . School would end up hating me with a passion too. And wanted to spend more time with DS too. . . Oh bollocksy bollocks. . .

jchocchip · 27/04/2012 18:03

Ned. Its not for head to agree phased return really, get your gp to put precise details in your fit note. Then they can accept you on your terms or you get to stay off a bit longer. Head is just thinking of the timetabling headache of all the part timers...

jchocchip · 27/04/2012 18:09

Gig my mum has those blow up ones too, but she prefers the sort of egg box foam cushions as she doesn't like the plastic. However district nurse is god so it just goes inside a pillowslip.

Sorry everyone I'm thinking of you all but feeling icky and can't reply to everyone. Will light a candle for scan results. On hols now apart from the report I've brought home to finish... Got a cold brewing, hope it goes away before Wednesday...
