OneinEight, not much help this, but I think a lot of women find the mid bit tough. The novelty and fear's worn off a bit and the slog ahead feels like it'll never end. I know I hit a low after no.2 and my BCN told me they expect it about then. The end is getting closer though. You're doing incredibly well you know. Smile

MaryAnnSingleton · 22/02/2012 14:17

a comforting hug for oneineight

Wanted to share this beautiful print with you and the inspiration behind it. Have
only just discovered this illustrator as a friend has just bought a print - so went to look at her blog...

Hi all - lots of posts so I'll try to be brief for once Grin

1in8 - I think going up and down is very natural - esp. if you are still feeling some nausea, - also I found the steroids had a big effect on my mood, - made me feel miserable. Also had chemo flush - don't panic, that's normal! (but they never tell you about it for some reason Confused

I had herceptin - I wasn't as badly affected as amber, - but for me it wasn't the plain sailing I'd been led to believe - had a few hitches and s/e's - but it was certainly more doable than chemo and I was able to carry on reasonable normally. I do know people who have had it with very few if any problems, - friends, and my SIL - and I honestly think they are in the majority, so don't be put off or worried. Also I found my probs. were during the first few cycles, then I wasn't to bad in the middle then it seemed to peak again as it accumulated towards the end.

Pennies - your job sounds very enjoyable, and loads of luck with your recon., - you're bound to feel a bit daunted, but I speak to loads of people who are so pleased they had it done Smile - and do let us know how you get on - I'm waiting for an appointment to start on discussions about my recon. and I think mine may be a bum/legs one - so I'd be very interested in your experience (and any tips!)

Gig - no further advice about babies

I think you just have to keep doing it KK Sad That's what I've been told, anyway. Have stocked up on fruit but i really want pancakes and hot cross buns Sad

SparkleRainbow · 22/02/2012 15:08

Weight is a fickle thing. I have definitely "plateaued" sometimes in the past, even though I was not breaking the diet the weight loss, slow as it was, seemed to stop. I read an article recently that said you have to lose weight slowly over the course of a year or so, in order to keep the weight off. Now there is a cheery thought for a wet cold wednesday afternoon!

KurriKurri · 22/02/2012 15:13

You are both sensible of course, - I think I get demoralised rather easily, because part of me thinks that if my thyroid isn't right, I might be totally wasting my time, then I give up and eat a cake! Grin But I am determined this time, as much for the idea of eating healthily as losing the weight, and the healthy eating thing I'm doing (basically the low GI diet) doesn't leave me feeling hungry.

Also - I didn't do as much exercise last week, as classes were off for half term, so maybe that is a factor.

Lunch out with a friend tomorrow though - will have to choose carefully from the menu!

Gigondas · 22/02/2012 15:37

Kurri I will send dh on later as he has been reading a book about nutrition and it has some very interesting ideas on effective weight loss. One of those being the myth of "fat" being bad for weight loss as apparently you need some good fats for sustainable diet.

Gigondas · 22/02/2012 16:04

Surgeon rang and apparently they got good margins. Smile

I know it's a marathon (or maybe a steeple chase) but hearing him say that and that scans show no spread is big cheer up before finding out next steps.

Figgyroll · 22/02/2012 16:11

Afternoon everyone. Chocolate brownies are out of the oven and cooled down. Help yerselves.

Mind you, I am giving up chocolate anyway - I have a sore foot too, combination of chemo (I think) and being overweight so need to cut back on the fbs too. I'm also giving up newspapers and magazines as yet again I've opened a paper (our local one) and read an article about someone losing their BC fight and this time it was inflammatory BC which is the one I had. It shakes me to the core whenever I read something like that so I feel I have no choice but to avoid the situation altogether as I don't feel strong enough to face it. Anyone else done that?

MAS, I'm sure you'll be fine with the reading but your dad will step in if you find it all too emotional.

KK, your 6lb weight loss was brilliant, I'm sure next week will show a loss too. Try not to be downhearted about it.

Sparkle, snap about the heating. Now that DH works from home almost all the time I have learnt to wear extra layers and look forward to the days when he's in London when I can fiddle with the thermostat.

Gigs, I second (or is it third) the tilting the cot suggestion. It worked a treat with mine but I remember initially tilting it a bit too much and poor DS1 sliding down to the end of his cot. Blush

Interesting about the connection with morning sickness and chemo sickness because I was sick from the minute I found out I was expecting to the moment the boys were born and lost so much weight people didn't even know I was pregnant. Then with FEC I was very sick too. I wondered if there was a connection so maybe there is.

Ned, sorry you're still feeling a bit icky. It will pass but it's no fun while it's with you. I was sick for about 5 or 6 days then the rest of the time I was ok so I just tried to keep that in the back of mind while I was attached to the sick bowl Smile Glad you slept well though.

Topsy, balloon event would have made me leaky eyed too. Sounds like a great weekend though. Good news about not having cancer of the knee. I bet your doctor smiled. I've met another group of ladies from another forum and we have our own private one now. There's 7 of us and we meet two or three times a year in London. We've known each other over 8 years now and they are all dear friends.

Pennies, your new job sounds great. I'm a TA in our village school but only started when DS2 worked there. I've been there 13 years now and love it. When I started, the little ones would sometimes accidentally call me mummy but now they accidentally call me nana. A sign of getting old (or maybe the grey curls). Smile Good luck for your recon. It's a long op but you'll be fine and, once it's all over, you'll be so glad you had it done.

Well, off to do a bit more housey stuff and then make dinner.

Sending hugs to those who are feeling a bit icky or down today and thanks to our MAS for the Tamoxifen threads.

MaryAnnSingleton · 22/02/2012 16:24

waving to figgy and ignoring the brownie Grin
Thanks all for reassurance about the reading - dad has just emailed me his piece for approval, bless him.
Gig excellent news indeed about good margins - hooray !!!!!

LimeJellyforBrains · 22/02/2012 16:28

Definitely a steeplechase Gig, and you've just cleared a big fence!

Kurri maybe the weight is saving itself up to fall off in one go overnight? [deluded emoticon] 6lbs was a marvellous amount - maybe it was 2 weeks' worth?

KurriKurri · 22/02/2012 16:45

Thanks all - would be very interested to hear your about your Dh's book Gig Smile Hooray for clear margins - that is very good news, and I hope it has given you a big boost, how is the wound doing today?

LJ - I def. think the 6lb was more that a weeks worth (it was at least 2 weeks IIRC) but I do like the idea that my fatty bits are waiting for their moment and then will drop off over night - I shall hang on to that thought Grin

That print is lovely MAS, and the sentiment behind it Smile

Figgy - sorry about your foot, I hope you can get that sorted soon, - can't remember if you are on tamox. or arimadex, or neither, - but they can cause aches and pains. And yes - steer clear of things that upset you, - papers and mags seem determined to bombard us with tragic stories, - but there are many more happy ones out there that we don't hear about. Don't clutter your life with info. you don't want or need is my motto. (I realise it's not a very snappy mottoGrin)

smee · 22/02/2012 16:59

Gig, that's fantastic. Smile Smile Hope you and DH can have a teeny bit of a celebration tonight. Definitely v.good news.

Figgy, I know what you mean about avoidance, trouble is bloody cancer's everywhere - those Macmillan posters are a constant bug bear with me. 'Having a Bad Day' seems to loom round every bus shelter. I feel like ripping them down and screaming 'I wasn't until I saw your poster..!' Hmm

Sore feet - how intriguing, as I have two of those too. Did we all have Tax?? I think we did..

Kurri, I think exercise boosts the metabolic rate, so does help with weight loss quite a bit. You did brilliantly last week, so patience woman and step away from the cake. Grin

Right, Shrove Wednesday here as I uselessly forgot yesterday. DS reckons he can toss a pancake 99 times and has an ambition of sticking one to the ceiling. Wish me luck.. ! Grin

Gigondas · 22/02/2012 17:29

Completely know what fear is re cancer refs. As I posted earlier there was something on radio which strangely I didn't want to hear (pregnancy and sarcoma Hmm) .

And I will admit to having a list of survivors I go look at to try to balance when read that kind of article.

But I think it's also a question of awareness as when had mc and lost my son I knew that there was pregnancy/baby stuff everywhere I looked .

Gigondas · 22/02/2012 17:30

Oh and good luck re pancakes smee (mercifully dd so bloody fussy about food that have been spared).

Thanks for all the tips and advice- will defo tip cot

MaryAnnSingleton · 22/02/2012 18:11

I listened to the pregnancy and bc on Woman's Hour - it was all good news as she did her chemotherapy and gave birth to a healthy boy and she's 9 years clear Smile

OP posts:
Figgyroll · 22/02/2012 18:32

Gig, fantastic news about clear margins. That's one less thing to worry about. Definitely have a celebration with DH tonight if you can.

Smee, yes I was on Taxotere too (or Docetaxol as I think it's sometimes called too?). The pains in my arches started round about the last of the chemo sessions and sometimes are agonisingly painful but they are intermittent which is one good thing at least.

KK, loving the idea of the weight dropping off overnight all in one go, wouldn't it be lovely? Smile If only.

Brownies have met with approval and I had a tiny one - I'm useless at cutting them all equal sizes but I've bagsied the small slices (and no-one moaned about that Grin.) I made a delish pork Chinesey recipe in my slow cooker tonight, again everyone's loving it. Goodness me, I'm turning into Nigella. Smile

SparkleRainbow · 22/02/2012 19:06

Oo figgy truning into Nigella...the fbs trolley will never look better!

Good luck smee, I would love to see 99 pancake tosses.

Really good news Gig, well done you. Hope you do have a little celebration tonight.

Did my wii fit exercise, it really does hurt, so lets hope it really does work too! My weigh in says no weight change from yesterday ...yeah, and wii fit age was 29! (Clearly a load of rubbish) Grin

thegreylady · 22/02/2012 19:27

Great news about the clear margins gig:)
Dont talk to me about weight loss.I did WW for a year 2010/11 and lost 3 stones.Stopped going and put on a stone-went back...1st week lost 1 and a half pounds,2nd week lost a pound,3rd week...put half a pound back on again!!!!I just want to lose that stone again[and maybe another to go with it].

LimeJellyforBrains · 22/02/2012 20:30

So, how many pancakes on the ceiling Smee? Grin

Ooh Sparkle - 29! - I remember achieving scores like that when I first got Wii Fit - 3 years ago? The other day my Wii Sports age went down from....(drum roll)...75 to 65! Yikes! But at least it went down!

Figgy, not sure if I really fancy all spare weight falling off overnight - would wake up in a huge puddle of lard? yuk!

jchocchip · 22/02/2012 20:50

Hurray for gigs margins! Phew that is a relief.

I dropped a stone during December and January, but February is being stubborn. I'm not too worried about slow loss, but a lb now and again would be nice! Work is getting in the way of swimming and running though... Don't know when I am going to find the time to do weights... Dds are watching Sherlock Holmes.

Gigondas · 22/02/2012 21:24

Certainly is Smile

Wii fit is great (some way off that stage yet) but suspect it may be tricky to use as dd obsessed with karaoke game on wii so no one else gets a look in.

topsyturner · 22/02/2012 21:27

Great news about the clear margins Gig , think you should have one of those brownies off the fbs trolley to celebrate

Doesn't matter how many survivors I meet figgy , the ones who don't survive affect me so much more . Am going through a major wobble over wubblys passing . Feel selfish in the extreme , but it is all a bit too close if you get what I mean ?

I am having a bit of a down week . Probably the comedown from having a lovely weekend , and hearing about people passing away . Just can't seem to shift it though .
Good job I gave up alcohol for Lent , as I don't need another depressant !

On the plus side , tomorrow I can finally order my new mobile phone upgrade .

Gigondas · 22/02/2012 21:38

Topsy am sorry you are having down week (waves brownie under her nose). Not only the come down but appt and news about wubbly.

Also can I recommend to anyone wavering with diet , Masterchef is good viewing as some very untasty things on here- how can you make chocolate mousse that is runnyConfused
