Can you tell me what you (honestly!) eat in a day?

I'm getting blood tests for weight loss this week - yeah, yeah, I know, poor me, huh? This isn't stealth boasting though - I am concerned and so is GP. However, I do wonder if I am actually eating enough or if I have lost sight of what is 'normal'. Or if I'm just busy and burning it off?

you're telling me scarlett!

only thing is, surely there's a difference health wise between eating a tub of lard and eating nuts (which is why this morning I have got to my fat limit already) Confused

TheScarlettPimpernel · 11/01/2012 12:08

Hab I feel the same (but with staying within my limit and getting losses). I don't care if that's lame. Life is tough and I am going to celebrate every tiny tiny achievement I can get!

Sits yes, there is, healthwise. Loss wise, not. Cals is cals. I know it seems an odd approach but you see, it's that old problem: you can get fat on lentils, and you can get thin on Mars Bars.

TheScarlettPimpernel · 11/01/2012 12:10

(Cos when it comes to weight gain/loss as opposed to health, the nutritional content is neither here nor there: it is the basic maths of cals in, cals out, is what I mean obvs!)

It's odd because so many diets and healthy eating plans just don't addrses that, and they demonise or sanctify food types. Which of course has some truth in it but there is something so compellingly straightforward about just cals in, cals out. Simple as that.

I am definitely with you on that one!!

sitsyou · 11/01/2012 12:14

no, haven't mentioned weight before. 8st 12, 5 ft 3, you? I have always been around 8st but have recently started pigging out (SAHM) and have a wobbly belly which I have NEVER had before Sad. Probably due to age and having 2 kids too though

Haberdashery · 11/01/2012 13:01

I'm about seven and a half stone and 5'5". I would be so much happier at 8 stone (not least because more actual clothes that you can buy in shops would fit me and I wouldn't have to fanny around taking things in).

sitsyou · 11/01/2012 13:11

I've been 7 and a half before too for ages but think 8 stone is a better weight for me.
Tell you what, why don't you eat some of my food then we'll both get to our target weight Grin
I do walk a lot but other than that I don't do any exercise Blush. I weigh a lot more now than I did just after giving birth to DD1!
It's not so much about the weight either I don't think (I know I'm not overweight) but it's about how you FEEL. I just don't feel right at this weight (plus none of my trousers fit and I can't afford to buy a new wardrobe!)

CEDR · 11/01/2012 13:42

LadyClarice
I wouldnt' worry, I get my full calorie needs for the day! I can always fill up on wine at the end of the day too!

Bascially my exercise isn't equal every day... so some days I might cycle 30miles (half of those before breakfast) in which case I'll carb up a bit.... but the problem is that the body then thinks that it can have all those calories the next day too, when I'm doing no cycling!

I actually eat like a horse, I just try to make sure that the majority of things I eat are healthy.

So today, I am working at home, so I started with a big bowl of porridge with sultanas in and a cuppa. Then for lunch I had a green tea and a bacon and avocado sandwich on brown bread with chilli jam. I'll also drink lots of water today and I have an exercise class tonight! Haven't decided on dinner. We don't get takeaways much, but we do eat out 3-4 times a month.

CEDR · 11/01/2012 13:47

I'd also recommend My Fitness Pal, but please put realistic targets in. 1-2 lb a week up or down is a safe and reasonable target. I also used to use food focus (all the same difference really).

Also worth checking the "calories burnt" for the exercise as I think it's a little generous! I use Endomondo to track my exercise and it seems more realistic in terms of calories burnt. So for example for 25 miles of cycling at 10-12 mph Endo will say it's about 700 cals burnt, whereas MFP will call it about 1000 which in terms of trying to lose 1-2 lb a week is a big difference!

I have just eaten half a box of chocolate caramels

bows and waits for applause...

In my defence... I did have a gym class today which nearly killed me

exoticfruits · 11/01/2012 15:20

Yesterday was typical.
Breakfast-bowl of porridge with milk, some dried fruit and a tiny amount of brown sugar.
Lunch-homemade leek and potato soup with bread. A mango and a banana.
Afternoon (a low time where I need a snack) -a piece of fruit cake.
Dinner- pork chop, baked potato, cabbage. A yogurt.
Evening -one apple and one square of dark chocolate. (an essential everyday but never more than one)
Through the day 3 cups of tea, one coffee, 2 fruit teas and water.

ceebeegeebies · 11/01/2012 15:53

I totally agree about the diet which is basic maths of calories and calories out - I lost 3 stone doing a diet like that. Once you get your head around it, it actually is quite liberating plus I like the control you get from monitoring everything you eat Grin Hence why I am doing it again now...

Anyway, today I have had:

Breakfast - porridge with a little bit of syrup, banana and raisins
Snacks - Twix cake bar-type thing plus 2 slices of bread with peanut butter on
Lunch - wrap with a teaspoon of pesto spread on it and a little bit of grated cheese in it plus a bag of hula hoops followed by 40 jelly tots (I know cos I counted them Grin)
Snacks - carrot sticks, satsuma plus 2 belgian chocolate biscuits
Snack (before I go to the gym) - 2 weetabix
Tea - 3 rashers of bacon (with the fat cut off), 2 fried eggs, tomatos and mushrooms

As I am going to the gym to do a very full-on aerobics class later, I have eaten all that and still have 367 calories to play with today Grin

Xenia · 11/01/2012 15:56

Every day I have bacon grilled, egg yolks poached and a little bit of brown rice for breakfast.

4 days a week lunch is as today - grilled salmon, corn on the cobs (2) with butter, spinach and brown rice

Usually apple and orange in afternoon or after lunch.

Often at the moment smoked salmon in two slices of brown bread at present

It feels quite a lot

I don't drink, smoke or eat junk food. I am never ill. (so far touch wood)

sitsyou, if I could take half a stone of the weight you don't want, I happily would!

Xenia, eating the same thing for lunch four days a week would drive me nuts. Don't you get bored with it?

This is interesting! My day today:

Breakfast: half muesli half granola mixed together, bit odd but it's nice!, cup of tea

Snack: handful or three of salted cashew nuts and a banana

Lunch: cheese and veg panini

Dinner: homemade fish and chips with a bit of broccoli, glass of juice, slice of cake.

I'm eyeing up the bloody large bar of choc for tonight :)

YourNeighbourTotoro · 11/01/2012 17:50

Oh forgot to add that as I eat quite early with my DS I normally then have a bowl of cereal/toast and another cuppa in the evening

Ifancyashandy · 11/01/2012 18:01

So today!

Porridge made with water, with banana, sultanas and teaspoon of honey. Three rice cakes with marmite and a pot of coffee.

Home made vegetable soup & three rice cakes with low fat cream cheese & tahini.
2 dried figs and a handfull of saltanas.

30 raw carrots & an apple juiced at home.

Off to gym now & will have baked salmon with roasted tomatoes and wilted spinach when home.

Jajas, nice to meet a fellow 'sufferer'! Unlike you, I have a biggish appetite, though I do find it hard to eat a lot in one go so big portions are out. I basically snack all day long. I think your food sounds much healthier than mine, though. I eat a fair number of packets of crisps and sweet things. Would you think about replacing semi skimmed milk with full fat or anything like that? It's not huge in terms of fat (4% as against 2%) but any calories help, IMO. And are you having butter on your toast? Extra butter is a good thing, in my book. Also cheese is pretty calorific. And did you try myfitnesspal at all? I am quite enjoying it - it's particularly interesting to see how many calories things actually contain.

Haberdashery · 11/01/2012 20:53

So, I'm not sure this is going to work, unless I aim for way way over the amount of calories I should be consuming. Myfitnesspal tells me I should aim for about 2100 calories per day to put on a pound a week. I've eaten completely normally today just to see how it worked out and I've eaten around 2600 calories. I factored in walking a mile each way to work and back which apparently allows me about 100 extra calories which I included in the 2100. My BMI is something like 17.5 which is a bit underweight and I would really like to be in the healthy range. On my usual diet I am definitely not putting on weight.

How many extra calories should I aim for, do you think?

Sorry to those struggling with weight loss - I'm aware that this probably sounds really irritating. I don't mean it to.

Back again.

Breakfast... two bowls of museli, skimmed milk, tea, two apples
Snack... some mango
Lunch... thick veg soup, two carrots with humous, a yogurt, a pear, a latte
Snack... a pear, fresh mango
Dinner... an innocent ready meal, a slither of DH' s pizza, yogurt, Apple
Snack.... a small bowl of cheerios (dry) and a cup of tea

5'6, 8 stone. Underweight but skinny frame so doesn't look tooooo skinny. I eat quite well, good size portions, I think I fill up in fruit as I do just love it (teeth are bloody sensitive though!). Used to do lots of exercise but following Ds 17 months ago, I might go twice a week, but then not go for four weeks. Quite a bit of walking though.

Op, if you are still reading. How are you? What did you eat today?
