This thread is for everyone who wants to stick to their diet, and would like to benefit from public support in doing so.

Rules for participants:

  1. Define your own limits - post them here or keep to yourself, but be clear and specific about which foods are allowed and which ones are not;

  2. Keep your diary - post here on a daily basis what you've eaten, and how this deviates - if it does - from your goals;

  3. Be honest;

  4. 1 month commitment required - which means that even if you have a diet slip, you are still expected to keep posting your daily reports (and hopefully get back on track in the meantime) until at least 1 February;

Feel free to talk about anything health and diet related - especially the difficulty you're facing when trying to change your eating habits - but please be supportive and sensitive to other people's decisions/choices. Negative or judgemental posts about somebody else's ability to keep to their promises strictly not allowed.

Remember - this thread is more about making it happen than talking about it.

Believe in yourself! You're doing this to become a better YOU.

Glenshee I'm up for this! But.... Can I start in Jan (maybe the 4th)? We still have parties and meals away from home that I have to contend with!

Glenshee · 26/12/2011 23:12

My diet goals:

Not allowed:

  • black tea, coffee
  • nuts
  • canned and processed foods, additives/flavourings (especially sulphites and artificial colors)
  • all sugar/chocolate/sweets
  • bread and similar (to exclude wheat, gluten and yeast)
  • dairy products (except fresh milk)

Must have:

  • 8 glasses of water a day

I'm finding it most difficult with avoiding bread and drinking enough water.

I am a different, and much happier person, when I stick to my diet and get some very annoying health issues otherwise, so would like to enjoy the new year in the happy state! :)

Thank you everyone who will join me with their own challenge!

GlaikitFizzEggNog - great stuff - will be looking forward to your company!

Forgot to add, I'm also trying not to eat late in the day - past 9pm - and this is also an important goal for me.

hi glenshee. Would love to join you. Have one last stone to lose and will be low carbing (atkins based).

I aim to have no potatoes (my downfall), rice, pasta. Sweet things present no challenge as I don't have a sweet tooth.

No alcohol through the week and only red wine (in moderation) on Saturdays only.

Track all foods!

Exercise 3 times per week, possibly C25K.

Minimum of 1.5l of water per day.

I will get rid of this excess stone and maybe even a few pounds more!

michglas · 26/12/2011 23:25

Hi, I want to start on 1st January if that is okay. Mine will be no bread, small portions of pasta and rice, and to have homemade soup for lunch every day. Track all foods, cut out coffee seeing as I can't drink it without sugar and increase my water intake. I have mega amounts of weight to lose - 5 stone plus.

Glenshee · 26/12/2011 23:57

Hi openyerlugholes - I'm also on no alcohol - forgot to mention it as it's not an issue for me at the moment. It was at some point, as I really like beer, but I managed to get off it some months ago, and don't crave it as much at the moment.

Very impressed with your exercise plan - well done! I'm nowhere near. Never even heard of C25K - until now :) Good stuff!

michglas - looking forward to your first report on the 1 Jan! Xmas Smile
Thanks for joining!

Couch to 5k Smile. Looking forward to getting going again in the new year. Have lost 2 1/2 stone and want another one off.

Have taken time off for the holidays and have put on at least 5lbs. Feel awful - flabby, unfit, unhealthy. Time to remedy that!

ameliagrey · 27/12/2011 12:08

can I just hijack and say that potatoes are quite healthy- lots of vit C and fibre- BUT sweet potatoes are better as they are packed with vitamins and a small one boiled/steamed or dry roasted is not amny calories.

also the soup for lunch- if you are not having any protein ( ie if it's a veggie coup) you will be starving my dinner time and tempted to snack.

if you can, it's better to have something like cold meat, tinned tuna ( not in oil) or eggs instead of the soup.

ameliagrey · 27/12/2011 12:11

ps- my own goal is not to snack. I am not overweight but have put on 3 pounds in almost as many days by eating in between meals, and my trousers etc are very tight round the waist. I had lost 5lbs a while back and need to shift 3. Not a huge amount but I am 50s and the weight just sticks so easily now. I reckon the nibbles are around 300-400 cals- another meal in itself.

ameliagrey · 27/12/2011 12:15

For breakfast I had a boiled egg and 4 oat cakes ( I can't eat wheat so have a gluten free loaf as well.) I am also intolerant of dairy.

I have snacked on 2 spoonfuls of trifle and a few nuts- very high cals and this is my downfall.

For lunch I am having turkey ( there's a surprise) and green salad with a tiny bit of brown rice salad -

dinner tonight- salmon with soy/ginger and stir fried broccoli, mange tout etc etc- rest of family will have noodles too.

Apple etc afterwards and my calcium supplement.

Glenshee · 27/12/2011 22:04

Today's report:
omlette
herbal tea
2 courgettes crumpets (against my diet but seemed unavoidable - this was in somebody else's house)
organic raisins for a snack
roast veg - sweet potatoes, carrots
raw veg salad - tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions etc
6 glasses of water throughout the day
no food after 9pm (yippee!)

I'm pleased with myself today :)

Glenshee · 27/12/2011 22:05

ameliagrey - thanks for joining!
"2 spoonfuls of trifle" - well done on being able to stop :)

ameliagrey · 27/12/2011 22:06

If all the protein you have had today is 2 eggs that is not enough- you will lose muscle mass, not fat.

Any decent diet will say that you need a small amount of protein at each of your 3 main meals.

ameliagrey · 27/12/2011 22:06

sorry- don't want to sound critical but just worried about you- as with so little protein you will feel tired.???

Glenshee · 27/12/2011 22:07

i forgot the chicken in the salad. obviously focusing on the offenders.
valid point, ameliagrey.

Glenshee · 27/12/2011 22:21

"you will lose muscle mass, not fat" - I'm not trying to lose weight actually, just be healthier generally. The weight was never a problem in my case.

I need to lose 2 stone, am 11 stone 12 at the moment and 5ft6 tall. My goals will be to cut down on bread and cheese.
Back to work tomorrow on nights which always mess up my eating patterns. If anyone has any good tips for dieting on shifts would be very grateful. I do twelve hour shifts with a half hour meal break.

EustaciaVye · 28/12/2011 12:20

I need to lose a stone.

Today so far I have eaten 2 pieces of toast & margarine, a chocolate brownie and 3 cups of tea.

Not the healthiest of starts, but sadly fairly typical Blush

EustaciaVye · 28/12/2011 12:22

I am also not a very motivated healthy eater, and love carbs so not sure how I am going to manage it really...

Tillyscoutsmum · 28/12/2011 12:34

I would love to join but have too much chocolate going on until next week. I will start 2nd Jan. I would like to lose 1-1.5 stone - ideally by the end of March.

I will eat 3 meals a day (currently skip breakfast and graze on crap until a huge meal at around 8-9pm)

I will eat similar food but will cut down on portion sizes

I will cut down on takeaways/fast food (one per week max)

I will give up my one can of full fat coke per day

I will not eat chocolate after meals

I will aim to do more exercise (walk to school as often as possible and maybe even dust off the Wii fit)

I am 5ft 7 and about 12 stone (will weigh myself on the 2nd Jan)

liveinazoo · 28/12/2011 12:39

can i join in tomorrow when ive got some healthy ffood in the fridge?
i need a healthy eating overhaul rather than to loose weight but need bit support as i am a sugar junkie?

Glenshee · 28/12/2011 13:10

NCIS, EustaciaVye, Tillyscoutsmum, liveinazoo - welcome :)

EustaciaVye - I like all those things too (toast, tea, chocolate) :) First two weeks of avoidance are the hardest, but after that you find other tasty things which are healthier and better for you, and you are a happier person throughout the day rather than for those few minutes when you're indulging. What are your goals for the next month specifically?

I'm so glad that more people are willing to join! I'm at work today, very lonely (most people on holidays obviously) and with your company I am hoping to say big and hairy no to the coffee machine (would really prefer it to just magically disintegrate into dust one day!!!)

OP posts:
NCIS · 28/12/2011 13:49

So far today I have had porridge made with semi-skimmed milk and one tsp of brown sugar, homemade fat free vegetable soup and cheese and crackers but a much smaller portion than I would normally have.
To drink I've had one glass of orange juice and several cups of tea/coffee with milk but no sugar.
