Hello all - apologies for getting a bit behind again Blush

I hope that your infection continues to improve Figgy - you must be pretty fed up of that wound by now. But hooray for new laptop. - Mine is on its last legs, - makes a noise like a plane taking off, and the screen shakes - very hard to get the little arrow thingy where I want it to go! - Mind you I turned it over today to give it a clean and there was quite a lot of crumbs and lumps of chocolate stuck to the bottom Blush Grin

Well done to all the children taking part in concerts, nativities and plays, they are lovely for parents and great fun, but having working in schools, I know how much rehearsing goes into them, - so its a big effort, especially for tinies. So they deserve a round of applause from me Smile And well done to our DS 1in8 on his piano exam Smile

I hope everyone is OK today, and good thoughts to everyone having rads atm. - I'm sorry to hear about Nanny Edna, I hope she passed peacefully. MAS you will have to force your mum to eat treats Smile -mine is a very tiny person, and its hard to get her to eat much, - I have included very chocolatey biscuits in my Christmas parcel!

Loved that nativity clip MAS - what a fab little girl Grin

DD and I have decided we will put the Christmas decs up today. I have found it hard to be motivated. Also I keep having very horrible dreams atm, - so feeling rather tired.
It's weird but now Dad is gone, I don't think of him with alzheimer's any more, - when he was alive his illness was such an ever present thing, - but now I am just remembering how he was for the vast majority of his life.
And then I miss him even more because he was so special Sad

jchocchip · 16/12/2011 14:48

I can't see it but I'm not on the pc. This thread is less secure than a closed group on facebook but at least it is anonymised.

Been for my swim. Lots of lengths today. Had a row with orange who were still asking us for money even after we moved house and isp. Seems to be sorted now thank goodness.

Need to clean the living room and get ready for Christmas!

Time for a Brew and some chocolate first, though Xmas Grin

cakesandale · 16/12/2011 14:50

apparently if people like the thread it will appear on their FB page. As MAS says, none of us would do that, but we do have lurkers, who are very welcome, it's just that I'd rather they didn't splatter the thread all over Facebook.

I think it would be good if the person who started the thread could opt out of having the button on their thread. Otherwise people like us will just walk away and have our conversations somewhere else Sad

jchocchip · 16/12/2011 14:52

xpost kk. So hard to have Christmas when you are befeft. Hang on to all the special memories. (hugs)

cakesandale · 16/12/2011 14:54

KK what you said about your Dad brings back memories of when my dear old Dad died. He was suddenly no longer tired and unwell (and strangely rather less irascible in my memory than, actually, he really was - a sort of angelic, vigorous version of Dad). That's how he'll want you to remember him....

KurriKurri · 16/12/2011 15:30

It's odd isn't it Cakes?, but I'm really glad in a way, because I worried that my memories would all be about when he was ill, and it would somehow wipe out my 'proper' memories of him. But that isn't the case

I'm going to make a big effort for Christmas not to get down, I'm sure things will feel a bit better when I'm properly out of isolation - this weekend - and I can hug people.

Has everyone sent off their Christmas parcels? - I'm doing mine now to send tomorrow, - hope it won't be to late, - I don't know the last posting date.

Driftwood999 · 16/12/2011 17:28

cat64 have a good time at the 18th!. In the tradition of being the middle aged auntie, I would always produce a baby picture, of the naked birthday boy/girl. Works at weddings too Xmas Grin

MaryAnnSingleton · 16/12/2011 17:30

kk a hug for you -but glad you are having good memories of your dad.
Have taken the boy to the dentist - all well,he has lovely perfect teeth, unlike his poor old mum.
I have discovered a yummy thing that is healthy !! M&S raspberry and cranberry juice - it also helps Shelter by giving a donation- very refreshingly tart yet sweet.

Aargh. Knew there was something I should have done this morning. Missed the florist again. I must phone them first thing tomorrow. Have just ordered even more plants from Thompson and Morgan for my mum, and while I was there ordered some for Dh's aunty and uncle. (only met his uncle a couple of years ago - complicated situation.)

Have been accused of smelling of bleach by dd1, think I had better do something about that...

Had an ecard from my Uncle and Auntie in South Africa which made me miss them so much. Haven't seen them for 4 years. My dad's only brother.

Driftwood999 · 16/12/2011 17:56

KK thinking of you and what you are going through, grieving for your dear dad and thinking of your mum. One is so blessed to have had a special dad and they often leave a legacy of example, which is cherished by the younger generation. My dd died suddenly 7 years ago, so did not have the additional pain of a lingering illness. It was a shocking time, the poignancy of it all is intense. I was able to properly grieve, although I and other family members had physical symptoms for some time, the feelings come back from time to time and makes us appreciate what we have. Be very gentle with yourself.

KurriKurri · 16/12/2011 18:10

Thank you all for your kind words, - Driftwood, - hugs and love to you, I am so sorry you have had the terrible grief of losing a child. I know there are many of us on here who have been through the grieving process, and several for whom this first Christmas after loss will be especially hard. So loving thoughts to you all.

Have fun at the party cat - embarrassing photos area must Grin

I hope your mum enjoys her flowers and plants jane Smile

DD is playing 'Isn't it a lovely day for a walk in the rain' on the piano - from one of my favourite films 'Top hat' - I love all those old musicals with Fred and Ginger, and Gene kelly etc.

DH is making spicy butternut squash and sweet potato soup for tea. yum!

Figgyroll · 16/12/2011 18:26

Tea sounds yum, KK. Glad you're nearly out of isolation. I bet there are lots of squishy hugs waiting for you and they will soon cheer you up. I think it's only natural you will be having thoughts of your dear dad 'as he was'rather than how he was leading up to his passing. I have lovely memories of my darling mum and know this Christmas will be hard as she always came for the day and we used to have such fun.

Jane, flowers are a lovely Christmas gift. Why are you smelling of bleach? Grin

Cat, enjoy the 18th party.

Well, last day of school was great fun. We had a celebration assembly, all the children singing Christmas songs with a 'band' (I use the term loosely Xmas Grin made up of members of staff. As I'm tone deaf I always opt for 'crowd control' but the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and sang their hearts out. AND, when I looked through the hall doors, it was snowing. We played games in class, finished the party food and I was thrilled that some of the parents bought me small gifts for Christmas with lovely little personal notes thanking me for working with their little'uns. Now, two weeks off. Hoorayyyyy!!!!!!!!

KurriKurri · 16/12/2011 18:32

I remember you had such a tough time Figgy, losing your mum and getting your DX at much the same time, you have coped remarkably with a very difficult year xx

Ahh at the lovely notes and gifts Smile

amberlight · 16/12/2011 19:00

Hi all, reading but not posting much. Keeping you all in my thoughts. 15 rads done, 3 more to go (the booster ones). Bit 'sunburned' but not badly. Tired, understandably, but cheerful.

Driftwood999 · 16/12/2011 19:18

Hi Amber - Way to go! Good to hear rads are speeding by, you'll be done to a turn, just in time for Christmas Dinner Xmas Grin

amberlight · 16/12/2011 19:23
Xmas Grin
KurriKurri · 16/12/2011 20:01

yay - only 3 to go, well done amber, (or do I mean medium or rare amber Grin)

jchocchip · 16/12/2011 20:05

That's great Amber, sounds like your skin is not too bad.

Figgy, hurray for two weeks off. :) The bleach is chlorine from the pool. My sense of smell is not good, so I don't really notice it but dd said it was strong so guess a bath is in order. The showers at the pool are little feeble but I always wash my hair. Probably the simple shower gel I'm still using doesn't help.

Mum rang me today and seems quite animated enjoying reading news in Christmas cards. I am ordering things off the internet for her - makes life easier.

dh had a name the mr men quiz at his Christmas lunch which they all struggled with !

sandripples · 16/12/2011 20:21

KK, that's really good that you can remember your dad as a healthy dad. I can also do this with my dad but with my mum it is much harder as she started to have strokes etc a long time before she died. I was 23 when she had her first stroke and I don't feel I do remember her younger days well enough really.

Drift - I am so sorry about your DD and feel sad even writing this although I don't know you.

Others - well done on your rads and other treatment, hang on in there and allow yourselves the wonderful distraction of a joyful Christmas!! (It worked well for me 2 years ago at diagnosis time - I've never been so creative with my cooking since!)

MAS - sorry your DS needs more help with coming out of himself - does he make the most of any clubs at school where he can feel comfortable? The music room and the resource centre were really important to my DD when she did not feel comfortable elsewhere in the early/ mid-teens. Later she decided she didn't care what others thought and had the strength to be her own person.

I was so tired at work today I couldn't do amuch useful - snow was falling for 2 hours so I left a bit early at 4.20. I am looking forward to a Christmas break!

Driftwood999 · 16/12/2011 21:25

Hello Sandripples - thanks for your thoughts. Please remind me, where are you, in the journey of treatment?

Driftwood999 · 16/12/2011 21:37

Just to clarify, dd, DD, refers to my father, not daughter, any misunderstanding is entirely my fault. I know others have lost offspring, but thankfully that has not happened to us.

KurriKurri · 16/12/2011 22:09

I'm very thankful to hear that it was not your daughter Driftwood, - apologies for misunderstanding you (not of course thankful that you lost your dad, I'm sorry you lost him so suddenly - it is a terrible shock when that happens) but I think it is every parent's nightmare that they will outlive their children.

SR - it is hard when you lose your parents when young, and don't feel as if you had time to know them, - DH was 24 when his father died, and his sister only 19, - and in a way they didn't get to know him as another adult IYSWIM.

I remember all your Christmas cooking while you were waiting for your surgery, - a very good distracting technique Smile

I have put out my knitted Dickensian Christmas Mice that I made for the children years ago they look like this - we still put them out every year, and its made the house look a bit more Christmassy and cheerful.

Ilovegeorgeclooney · 16/12/2011 22:14

Hello all, so sorry to read about peoples' difficulties. I follow the Churchill adage "If you are in hell keep walking". However I had the best Christmas present ever today, my daughter had a scan etc today and the cancer has disappeared!!!!!! She will still have another 7 chemo's but the prognosis is that she will be cured completely! I am completely bonkers with happiness!
We had a good end of term today, I am secondary, the staff put on a play 'The Only Way is Bethlehem' for the pupils, I was a wise woman who couldn't read a map and was blonde ( it worked as a joke because I am very red! ). Great fun.
On a different note MAS I would definitively speak to your son's Drama teacher there are lots of ways to improve a pupil's performance for Drama eg ensuring he is working with other pupils he is comfortable with, private rehearsals etc.
Best wishes to everyone.

KurriKurri · 16/12/2011 22:17

ILGC - that is indeed the best Christmas present ever, - I can't tell you how pleased I am for you and your DD, - what a terribly anxious time you have been through. She has been such a trouper throughout - you must be very proud of her. And loads of love and luck to her for the rest of her treatment. Smile
