I am in total agony

Yesterday I woke up with pain in my right arm at the top. Saw a pharmacist to ask about pain relief and she felt I had pulled a muscle. Went to bed last night with it covered in deep heat and still in pain and I couldn't lie on it. This morning it is fine but the whole of my left arm round to my breast and back is absolute agony and there is no way I can lift anything with it. Could it be my FM or something else? I am hoping to see an osteopath on Tuesday but I feel like crying it hurts so much. I have so much to do today, I can't be out of action.

I take those drugs exexpat (anti-convulsants) for nerve pain and they really do work. You can take paracetemol every 4 hrs but no more than 8 within 24 hrs and ibuprofen every 8 hrs. However if you do have nerve pai, they may not touch the pain. Co-codomol is good and you can buy otc.

Hope the bath helped. I will be having one later too!

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2011 11:43

While FAB is in the bath can I just say how horrible it is to be ill or in pain at the weekend. You feel like you are being a huge nuisance (well I did) and virtually beg for some help. It's ok to be ill or in pain in the week though (but not on a Bank Holiday mind).

Becaroooo · 13/11/2011 11:45

Would they offer you tramadol fab ?

Could you take it if they did?

Just thinking if the pain is not manageable they may offer you an injection at the OOH surgery? I had an injection of steroid last year in my hip due to agonising pain (couldnt walk, couldnt stand) and it really helped....limping for 4 days but pain loads better.

x

Becaroooo · 13/11/2011 11:46

sparkling Oh yes! I know just what you mean. And me (or my kids) always get ill at weekends, after 6pm or on bank holidays!!!!

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2011 11:48

Oh yes Becarooo. It's generally Friday evenings here. I get sweaty palms with just the thought of phoning OOH.

Becaroooo · 13/11/2011 11:57
Grin

Yep.

Know just what you mean. If its me I try to wait til monday if I can but if its the kids I have to phone them

Ds1 was a very poorly baby/toddler and every bloody call ended with a trip to a&e by ambulance Sad

TheOriginalFAB · 13/11/2011 12:09

Told off for taking ibruprofen.
Have to see doctor twm {not interested when I have nentioned before about this pain}

This may not help you straight away but your various aches and pains may come down to posture (as does mine).

I've had several courses of Physio/osteo/chiro in the search for something that will get at the root cause, as you wish to do, as well as steroid injections, bizarre Chinese massage, remedial massage, etc etc.

I've also spent many hours googling, and my latest discovery is Esther Gokhale, and her '8 steps to a healthy back,' which is not woo at all, just a series of tutorials in how to lie, sit, walk and move in such a way as to free up your back and allow the pain to heal.
I've only just started, so can't say it's changed my life, but I'm hopeful it will bring some relief at least.
If you look on YouTube you'll find various clips of lessons by her.
Hope you start feeling better soon - it sounds hideous.

Hi,

I have fibromyalgia and have quite severe nerve pain in my arms due to spinal arthritis and the following painkillers i've found effective to varying degrees, might be worth asking your GP...

Amitryptiline
Pregabalin
Nortriptiline
Extorib (arcoxia)
Codeine (but only in so far as it knocks me out and i can sleep and ignore it!)
Diazepam

Obviously not all together BUT there is some help for neuropathic pain so don't be fobbed off with ibuprofen/diclofenac and paracetamol.

Best wishes.

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 13/11/2011 12:30

Oh and as it's a weekend and you need pain relief now i'd agree with the previous poster and get yourself to A&E. If it feels like hot pokers/needles down your arm then it's likely to be nerve pain and trust me OTC meds will NOT help. Try a heat pack on the area.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 13/11/2011 12:33

I would say your DH is prob right about action being better than inaction - but whether that means slogging it out on a rower is a moot point.
Might be worth a try just gently with not much resistance. Maybe ask Doctor Google for some shoulder-strengthening exercises!

TheOriginalFAB · 13/11/2011 12:38

I don't know what tramodol is.

I used to take amitryptiline but not now as I didn't feel it helped.

My arm feels like I have been hit with a hammer.

Feel exhausted.

No energy to do anything. Really want to write a letter to a close friend who is in hospital and very ill but can't motivate myself to do it.

DH did roast lunch though.

How am I going to get the kids to school? Too far to walk now they are at a new school. (8 miles).

OP posts:
BikeRunSki · 13/11/2011 12:42

Have you got an NHS walk in centre you could go to? My local one (Wakefield) has always been very helpful, and reffered me to a specialist on the same day if needed.

TheOriginalFAB · 13/11/2011 12:52

I will have to google as I am not aware of one. We have been to A & E if more than a doctor needed or we couldn't get an appointment.

HedleyLamarr · 13/11/2011 13:02

FAB I second MrsCustard. Get thee to A&E. I occasionally get an inflamed nerve in my shoulder which feels like someone is digging a knife blade under my shoulder blade. Industrial strength painkillers and anti-inflammatory pills help. Good luck, I hope it gets better!

TheOriginalFAB · 13/11/2011 13:09

Chest tighter now. Trying to stay calm as getting anxious will make my breathing laboured. DD has a friend coming soon so can't really leave at the moment. I honestly don't feel I need A & E but I have had this before and it concerns me I am getting it again and don't know why.

OP posts:
RandomMess · 13/11/2011 13:14

I really think you need to be seen today, if the ooh dr won't see you and there isn't a walk-in centre you can go to then you do need to go to A&E.

TheOriginalFAB · 13/11/2011 13:17

DH has gone to get milk, sweets, chocolate and paracetomol. He is going to ask the pharmacist if I can take co-codomol. When he gets back, or at 2pm, I have to phone OOH if I am not better and I will go from there.

OP posts:
TheOriginalFAB · 13/11/2011 14:52

Phoned OOH again as still no relief. Waiting for a call back.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2011 14:53

I hope you don't get the one without the magic wand again. Angry

TheOriginalFAB · 13/11/2011 14:56

No, I spoke to someone else who said someone else would ring me back to give me a time to go down. Pain no spread to other arm and breast.

I am upset at being dismissed as just suffering with stress but I didn't wake up stressed. I woke up with pain. I wouldn't feel safe driving the children on the motorway to school and don't understand why there hasn't been any pain relief.

OP posts:
TheOriginalFAB · 13/11/2011 14:56

Could it just be FM?
