LimeJellyforBrains · 23/11/2011 14:55

KK I will force myself to come out of Lurkdom to say how so, so sorry I am to read your news. The fond way you have always spoken of your darling Dad has always reminded me of my relationship with my own darling Dad who died in July 09 and who I still miss so much. Much love and hugs to you and your family. xx

Busy day today! LAST RADS yippee :) Knitting group for coffee and not much knitting tbh. Started making my sloe gin (need more gin to top up) later have to go to Dd1s parents evening and then pre-Christmas curry with the Knitterati. Having a bit of a lull now to catch my breath.

Dad had his cancerous thing removed- a dozen stitches apparently- that sounds a lot...but he sounds fine and it's over and done with.

amberlight · 23/11/2011 16:50

Last rads, Jane? Yippeeeeee!!!
MAS, eek re the size of your Dad's operation...so glad that's over and done with. How long will recovery be, I wonder?

KurriKurri · 23/11/2011 16:54

Thank you all so much, - LimeJelly, -how very sweet you are, it is lovely to see you - I think of you often and wonder how you are doing.

Bless you all for your kind words, - it really does help. I am going down to Dorset tomorrow morning, I'm not sure how long I'll be away, - as long as mum needs me for. The funeral is next Friday, the 2nd, a good friend has offered to hold the wake at her house and do all the catering which is very kind, and saves mum from having to worry about that side of things.

Dad's body is being cremated and his ashes scattered with my brother's, so they will be together.

I will sign off for now, good luck to everyone awaiting treatment and results, I'll be thinking of you all.

I am lighting a candle, to send my dear old boy on his journey, if anyone wants to join me - please do Smile

xx

cakesandale · 23/11/2011 17:12

Consider mine lit too. KK. Take care. x

Hooray MAS for good teachers and completed surgery for your Dad

And hooray to you too, Jane, for rads being over - ad for what sounds like rather a nice day, all in all.

I've got a candle lit too, Kurri. Will be thinking of you a lot over the next few days. Hope your DC are okay too. Very hard for them to lose such a lovely grand dad. xx

Glad you've de-lurked LJ. I've been wondering how you are too. Are you going to stay long enough to tell us? Hope you're through treatment and feeling fine and dandy. Smile

Got to run, but really well done Jane. Last rads is brilliant. Smile

topsyturner · 23/11/2011 18:35

Candle lit kk , much love for you and yours .

jane congratulations on your last rads . Celebrate tonight by having a small libation with the knitteratti ! (Loving the group name)

mas good news about getting the boys teachers on side .

I have been wiped out all day . Woke up during the night with massive headache (migraine ?) . And it has stuck with me all day despite lots of painkillers . Feeling slightly better now , but think I might have an early night and try to sleep it off .

Love to all .

Driftwood999 · 23/11/2011 19:15

I see the oncologist tororrow for the first time. What should I expect? Have seen GP today to collect prescription for Tamoxifen. It will be about the benefits of rads of course, but what should I be asking, from your exerience ladies, please?

DeeScent · 23/11/2011 19:25

KK, thinking of you - so glad your friend is helping out with the wake. Hope it's a positive time of remembering.

For those of you taking or about to take Tamoxifen and who also like the taste of coffee (and bearing in mind the RARE incidence of womb cancer associated with taking it) - from an article in the DM today:

"Four cups of coffee a day 'can help prevent womb cancer' - even if they're decaff. Women who drank four or more cups a day over many years were 25 per cent less likely to develop the disease than those who limited themselves to less than a cup daily.

Both caffeinated and decaffeinated varieties seemed to help ward off the disease, although tea had no effect, the 26-year study by Harvard School of Public Health in the U.S of almost 70,000 women found.

Drunk regularly, coffee may help lower levels of hormones believed to fuel the cancer, the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention reports.
Senior researcher Professor Edward Giovannucci said coffee could help against cancers associated with obesity, insulin and oestrogen, and that it had been shown to improve insulin resistance.

?Laboratory testing has found that coffee has much more antioxidants than most vegetables and fruits.?

The researchers said: ?Increasing exercise and maintaining normal body weight are probably the most important ways to prevent endometrial cancer.' They cautioned that adding cream and sugar to the beverage may cancel out the effects, as may smoking."

I may be buying a fancy coffee machine for Christmas...

DeeScent · 23/11/2011 19:32

Topsy, sorry to hear about the headache - that's really rough. Hope you wake up tomorrow with it completely gone.

Drift, my onc said rads would reduce recurrence by 50% so that sold it to me. He said there was negligible risk to heart and lungs these days (mine is on the left side). We talked more about the Tamoxifen really. Rads seemed a no brainer to me but perhaps the other ladies have some relevant questions for you to consider. Hope the onc makes things clear and you feel peaceful about the decision you make.

Driftwood999 · 23/11/2011 20:05

Thanks DeeScent - for all the positive messages. How are you feeling on the Tamoxifen?/today?

DeeScent · 23/11/2011 20:34

Well, Drift, I've taken the last two doses with my main meal in the evenings, and I do think the nausea is gone! The stomach pain I now realise was probably my period [embarrassed] You would think I would know Grin I guess any drug needs a bedding-in time but now seems okay.

Been rather emotional the last two days, but I see that as healthy as I have been doing sterling work in the stiff-upper-lip dept over the last two months and something had to give. Done too much research on rads creams and now know too much about the possible burns but will now concentrate on other things before I start on the 5th.

The new boiler was finished today so the house is nice and toasty which always improves the mood!

Driftwood999 · 23/11/2011 21:02

DeeScent - glad you are warmer all round! Sorry to hear about "stuff" you have gone through in the last few days...Very necessary process I think. I'm only just behind you. Hugs To you and yours. I am now in receipt of my first Tamoxifen packs and have just swigged the first tablet down with some whiskey my painkiller of choice whilst my dh told me a story read the leaflet aloud at my request.

Driftwood999 · 23/11/2011 21:10

DeeScent - PS. I've just come off hrt and am on day 2 of my period so will try to keep some sort of record. Early days isn't it?

DeeScent · 23/11/2011 21:12

Sounds like a fun evening, Drift Wink Hugs back.

Will be interested to hear what your onc has to say. That's a really valuable part of this thread, pooling info. I've learnt more almost as much on the internet as from the docs, although I do see their point of view that they are time-limited and also don't want to say more than a patient wants to hear.

Good luck tomorrow. Smile

Driftwood999 · 23/11/2011 22:10

Thinking about you today KK - have had a bit of a cry and introspective time today, about losing my own DD, there is never a good time, one just feels robbed, so just allow yourself to grieve. Just hold tight to you and yours and you will pull through. "they were amazing" Travel well. x
