When will labour start to make changes?

I don’t think it’s hand wringing, any more than we saw no contrition from Labour when they bankrupted the country by 2010.

I think it’s early preparation for poking fun at a government that made reckless promises and cheap criticisms when in opposition and now has to come good.

Possibly true, but let's see how much contrition there is from the party who have bankrupted us for decades to come with Brexshit. They too made reckless promises.

I don't think Starmer has made reckless promises, more sweeping statements.

Alarae · 05/07/2024 09:44

Should also caveat my post with I'm not saying Labour will overhaul everything in the Autumn budget, but it's likely going to be the first time we see what real changes they are looking to implement regarding the wider economy.

icelolly12 · 05/07/2024 09:52

I think we first will see some stability. It is good news that the markets are reacting positively - no Liz truss style crashes.

I don't know about anybody else but I do feel a weight has lifted already. Another four years of Tory damage would have been truly destructive.

MrsWhiskerz · 05/07/2024 09:53

My work chat is full of people asking when NMW will go up to £15PH!

that’s what they all voted for 🤦‍♀️

socks1107 · 05/07/2024 09:58

Alarea ten weeks from now isn't mid August? It's mid September.

Yes please do tell us @Stellarcasted where the estimated 10,000 plus kids who will be taken out of private education will go to school when the state schools are already full?

State schools aren’t full.

Their manifesto is fully costed.

It’s depressing to me that so many people have just accepted the last 14 years as “normal”. That the state of the country is “just the way it is and nothing will change”.

Do not be fooled, there is enough money - the Tories were just good at giving it to their mates and vanity projects rather than directing it where it was needed.

It’s ok to have a bit of hope for a change.

Absolutely ok to have hope

1dayatatime · 05/07/2024 10:04

@DontBiteTheCat

"I feel a glimmer of hope this morning, especially for the people I work with who are some of the most vulnerable in society."

And it's really important to have hope (rather than being a grumpy sour puss like myself!!). And even more important for the vulnerable in society to have hope.

The flip side of course is that if that hope is dashed especially for the vulnerable in society than that becomes even more unforgivable.

I genuinely hope that you are right to hope but please don't forget your post today and reflect on it for the 2029 election.

Apolloneuro · 05/07/2024 10:05

As this from the gov.uk site shows, there a plenty of places in state schools. That was just hysteria.

I don’t understand why everyone is saying this is an incredible night for Labour. Yes they have a massive majority but they haven’t won that many more votes than in 2019. Voters have just turned away from Tories.

Because it was a very targeted campaign in a FPTP system which only campaigned where it was possible/necessary to win. They didn't campaign to get a big vote everywhere. And their strategy worked.

Emmanuelll · 05/07/2024 10:11

Exactly. People have forgotten what Labour did for ordinary people. Some of them are possibly too young to remember if they themselves were children the last time they were in power.

crumblingschools · 05/07/2024 10:22

@Apolloneuro a local state Secondary school is full (and the only state Secondary in the town). So no places for any pupils who would want to transfer from the local private school and certainly nowhere for pupils to go if the private school was to close

Spaces need to be in the location where pupils need them

anon199900 · 05/07/2024 08:05

I actually feed bad for people who believe there will be huge change and fast.

I don't know anyone who thought that to be fair.

Everyone I know that voted to GTTO did it to stop things getting even worse and in hope for gradual change.

The spaces aren't where they are needed. Spaces in West Midlands aren't any good for a child living in Newcastle. Many LEAs through FOI have acknowledged no spaces for in year transfers.

Labour inherited a good economy from Ken Clarke. If global conditions had been then as they are now Labour would have done nothing for anyone. It’s easy to spend when the money’s there. Even so, Labour ran the economy into the ground by 2010.

Many, many Labour voters voted leave. The then Labour leader wouldn’t back remain.

About a third of Labour voters voted leave.

tinydynamine · 05/07/2024 10:42

One of the first things needed is the introduction of a "European-style" health insurance system and the abolition of the NHS in its current state. But nobody will dare do it.

That is an absolutely enormous project which would waste resources that should be directed at tackling health issues, not fiddling with the bureacracy.

That wasn't my point. Take who voted for what out of it. We voted out, so were leaving. Even after that the daft promises continued. Let's "get Brexit done", ending up with a terrible deal. One could argue that he did get it done, but considering he blocked May's better deal, only to get a worse one through himself, I would say that the hilarity only continued.

The Conservative party appear to be unable to actually plan a path out of the mess we are in. They are clutching at straws. I have been a conservative voter for the majority of my life, but I can't vote for them at the moment as they just don't have a clue. I can't really vote for them since Brexshit as that has cost me my income. As I said above, not necessarily because we voted out, but because we then didn't have a clue about what that meant, or what to do about it. It was this uncertainty and lack of leadership that caused my industry to suffer here.

As far as I am concerned they are, on a collective level, a bunch of fuckwits with no clue. They've had their arses handed to them as a result. Will Starmer implement anything that is aligned with my own views? Probably not. Will it be any more damaging to our economy than the last 14 years? It is hard to see what he could possible do that could be. I may well be eating my words, but the markets are already reacting positively.

I didn't vote for Labour, but I am pleased they won. If nothing else, it will give the Conservative party time to have a bloody good think about what to do next, and see if they can ever give me confidence in them again. I suspect not, at least for the immediate future.

If National Insurance was ringfenced for health and social care - and increased considerably for employers, employees and the self-employed - we would have a 'European-style' health and social care system.

Most systems in Europe are funded entirely or mainly by mandatory statutory contributions.

DontBiteTheCat · 05/07/2024 11:14

@1dayatatime I promise I will, and I hope to not be eating my words!

Of course, but with 77% of secondary schools having spaces, it’s not the issue it has claimed to be.
