When will labour start to make changes?

Well they'll be wanting to set a tone. So hopefully some key announcements in next few months, including a budget.

bergamotorange · 05/07/2024 08:09

Got to separate into cultural and policy changes.

In terms of culture, if there is to be change it could happen immediately. e.g. things like stability - Starmer said that he wanted cabinet members to serve longer in their portfolios, to stop the constant reshuffling. Resolving strikes - work can start now. Working with other countries - work can start now.

For major policy stuff, they need to do their first budget in the Autumn. Just before polling day there were reports that the economic outlook has improved a bit so they may have some wiggle room.

In terms of you feeling the results of e.g. more teachers - that will take time. The first time more teacher training places could be offered is presumably Sept 2025?

Pigeonqueen · 05/07/2024 07:50

At the first budget. But having a read of Labours pledges I can’t actually see what they’re planning to do, it just waffles on about cutting nhs waiting lists, more teachers etc. How are they going to suddenly do that?

https://labour.org.uk/change/first-steps-for-change/

Edited

Yes I thought it was all waffle too. I don't think they have thought much through. Let's hope they get their thinking hats on and come up with something good!

RipleyGreen · 05/07/2024 08:10

The naivety :(

THIS. I don’t have a huge salary. But I earn a bit more than the average salary. I am single. No savings. I know my disposable income is going to drop and I don’t have any other support.

Why do you think your disposable income will drop when there is a hard manifesto pledge not to increase income tax, NI or VAT - what tax are you expecting to go up?

Jifmicroliquid · 05/07/2024 08:11

I think a lot of people are going to be very disappointed if they think labour are going to come in and make positive changes.

Give it a few years and people will be slagging labour off for their incompetence.

Its the way it always goes, regardless who is in power.

SleepingisanArt · 05/07/2024 08:11

There's no money so how will they change anything? It's going to be the same just with a different bunch of self serving twits in 'power'.

Zonder · 05/07/2024 08:14

LumiB · 05/07/2024 08:00

I predict the first budget will be..we got I to office saw how bad it is, worse than we thought and now we have to raise ur taxes...that will be the usual spin

To be fair it's likely to be true.

MerryMarys · 05/07/2024 08:15

crumblingschools · 05/07/2024 08:07

Teachers pay and hopefully full funding of it needs to be agreed soon

How will that be paid for?

daisychain01 · 05/07/2024 08:15

traytablestowed · 05/07/2024 07:55

I see a change already! A whole load of corrupt, self-serving, under-qualified idiots have had their arses handed to them and are now seeking alternative employment.
Onwards and upwards!

seeking alternative employment? Come on, most of them already knew the writing was on the wall and will be now have roles as NEDs (Non-Exec Directors), Key Note Speakers at conferences, Industry events and After-Dinner circuits and roles in Industry.

They won't be on the breadline let's face it.

3luckystars · 05/07/2024 08:16

You want ‘change’ so badly you will vote for anything. I wish you well.

CoastalSunsets · 05/07/2024 08:16

I think people are going to be disappointed. Things will take years to sort out in terms of seeing an improvement to NHS and education etc, but people have pinned all their hopes on labour sorting it quickly. I don't think that's possible and people's expectations need to be managed. It isn't 1997, the world has changed hugely since then. It'll be years for big improvements and unfortunately people aren't patient.

Their manifesto is fully costed.

It’s depressing to me that so many people have just accepted the last 14 years as “normal”. That the state of the country is “just the way it is and nothing will change”.

Do not be fooled, there is enough money - the Tories were just good at giving it to their mates and vanity projects rather than directing it where it was needed.

It’s ok to have a bit of hope for a change.

crumblingschools · 05/07/2024 08:20

@MerryMarys schools can’t afford them without being funded. If no additional funding then no pay rises

Changes2024 · 05/07/2024 08:20

Just to confirm I asked (when) will there be charges someone replied most likely autumn. That's my question answered.

Same here I might have more.money because I don't have children but what I do is being put away to pay for my care when I'm older cos there will be no family to look after me and id like to buy the best care i can for myself. Problem is people or labour don't think oh okay thays sensible they think how dare she have more money than someone else.

So I too see my disposable income dropping to yet again pay for other people.

I know. That's why I questioned it!

Herecomesthesummersson · 05/07/2024 08:23

Anything they do will be better than what the Tories have done. Come on. I don't know how people can sit there typing this shit about how awful Kier is. Have they seriously forgotten all the heinous things the corrupt Tories have done already?

I think it will all seem a lot worse before it gets better. But it will get better eventually, it will have to be slow and steady. Labour can't wave a magic wand and instantly undo all the shit that's been done to the country for 14 years. Tories have slashed everything to ribbons. Everyone except the seriously rich are on the bones of their arse. But of course all the naysayers will just be moaning 'see Labour have done nothing, they're just as bad blah blah'.

daisychain01 · 05/07/2024 08:23

I take the view that change will take years, but the rot and decline in the UK that has already become clear for all to see, will not continue. Starmer has been measured and careful not to promise miracles, deliberately because he's pragmatic, been around long enough to not use all the gimmicks and promises from previous governments.

Honestly what's with people, the final counts aren't even ratified, and youre already demanding change next week. Don't you know how much work has yet to be done? Let's get behind the government and the country and not talk negatively without reason.

@Herecomesthesummersson we cross-posted, I'm glad there's a bit of common sense on this thread!

Because it's a pledge it's not a guarantee! How many u turns has starmer already done pre election, if you think he won't now he is power then you are naive

I find this incredible. Do you really think Labour will find piles of cash going to Tories and go “oh goody, we can spend dozens of billions on public sector wages, schools and the NHS”?

They won’t be be able to ‘recoup’ anything from Covid spending and the calls on defence and the Home Office will outstrip anything they cut elsewhere.

When we start paying more tax.

Oh we pay enough tax but is hard to keep up with all people moving here. Mainly because they are very poor. Also, because the welfare bill is bigger than people net contributing. However, if you want to pay more feel free to DONATE .

I think he wants two terms. If he breaks that pledge he will not have that opportunity.

Nothing in politics is a guarantee, obviously 350m per week for the NHS
