When will labour start to make changes?

@bergamotorange exactly! If you think labour aren’t going to raise taxes then… well… I think you’re in for a shock !

I answered above about wanting two terms. I guess we will find out in time.

If Labour raise income tax, NI, VAT they will have to answer to the electorate.

DontBiteTheCat · 05/07/2024 08:29

FinalCeleryScheme · 05/07/2024 08:24

I find this incredible. Do you really think Labour will find piles of cash going to Tories and go “oh goody, we can spend dozens of billions on public sector wages, schools and the NHS”?

They won’t be be able to ‘recoup’ anything from Covid spending and the calls on defence and the Home Office will outstrip anything they cut elsewhere.

I don’t recall saying that?

Two examples - closing loopholes on non dom status and targeting tax avoidance. That money is there, the Conservatives didn’t go after it, why is that?

MerryMarys · 05/07/2024 08:29

"Do not be fooled, there is enough money"

I wish that was true, but unfortunately you're very naive.

Vinorosso74 · 05/07/2024 08:30

I just said to DP, I wouldn't fancy the first day in the new job for Keir Starmer. It's going to be a long road to try and fix the mess.

bergamotorange · 05/07/2024 08:30

The big issue is there is a huge gap in public finances, but I can't see how income tax, NI and VAT can go up without people taking that grudge to the ballot box.

ginandtonic1122 · 05/07/2024 08:32

I don’t understand why everyone is saying this is an incredible night for Labour. Yes they have a massive majority but they haven’t won that many more votes than in 2019. Voters have just turned away from Tories.

I actually feed bad for people who believe there will be huge change and fast."

"Same. I can’t believe people are so naive as to think things will actually be different."

What I fear is that disappointment at the lack of any real change will quickly turn into anger, leading to a polarisation in opinions to a harder left and a harder right.

You said: “Do not be fooled, there is enough money - the Tories were just good at giving it to their mates and vanity projects rather than directing it where it was needed.

What can that mean except that Labour can pay for all the increased spending they urged on the Tories?

Non-dom tax advantage is already being removed. And tax avoidance is a fact of life; Starmer can’t change that. He certainly isn’t going to take on big business over tax.

PickAChew · 05/07/2024 08:38

I think the first few months is more likely to be a case of putting the brakes on. Scrapping the Rwanda plan and the millions spent on it and things like that.

This is my fear too. That people become disenfranchised with Labour and that Reform then start looking like a good option for more people in 2029. Farage has already said that's the plan.

I didn't vote for Labour or the Conservatives but I actually hope the Tories go away and reflect on this and don't rush into lurching further to the right. We need them to be a strong opposition, it's what is good for democracy. The Reform vote is very concerning though.

Well you maybe right or maybe wrong. Numerous posters have commented that there really isn't any money available - all I ask is that you remember your comment and reflect back on it at the 2029 election.

traytablestowed · 05/07/2024 08:39

@daisychain01 to be fair at least NEDs (Non-Exec Directors), Key Note Speakers at conferences, Industry events and After-Dinner circuits and roles in Industry aren't jobs* funded by taxpayers.

*term used loosely

crumblingschools · 05/07/2024 08:42

@MerryMarys wouldn’t want to be Starmer having to make decisions like that

Just to confirm I asked (when) will there be charges someone replied most likely autumn. That's my question answered.

🙄 Just to confirm, that person won't know anymore than the rest of us. But okay, autumn it is. Ffs. 😅

I absolutely will. I am not a dyed in the wool Labour supporter, and if I am wrong I’ll hold my hands up.

I believe that there is money available to start making changes come the budget. I don’t think Labour will deliver a land of milk and honey, but I don’t believe all the doom and gloom either. It’s not going to be an easy road for them, and the changes will be slow but I believe they will come. I feel a glimmer of hope this morning, especially for the people I work with who are some of the most vulnerable in society.

MimitteAndElsaGoToSwitzerland · 05/07/2024 08:45

I'm not expecting immediate change. They've been handed the country at a time the Tories have spent 14 years fucking it. Of course it takes time to come back from 14 years of neglect.

Mrsdyna · 05/07/2024 08:46

We will continue down a path of managed decline.

Stellarcasted · 05/07/2024 08:46

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 05/07/2024 07:52

There won’t be any changes. He’ll whack the VAT on private schools as a big flagship move and then everything else will carry on crumbling as it has been.

That's fine, that would be a great start.

FundingitallHow · 05/07/2024 08:49

@FinalCeleryScheme John Mcdonal said they will raise public sector wages.

The problems we face have been faced across the eu and world.
The only reason people aren't rejecting their gov in Europe is because they are naval gazing like us and belive their problems have come from a useless gov. Had their gov been right they too would be voting in the opposition.

I've not seen any real inspiring ideas of how they will create this wealth and stabilise the economy, bring in teachers, nurses and doctors.

Personally I think raising the tax threshold is a very easy way to put more money in the poorest pockets. But they havant mentioned that?

A young student voter on 7am said, how how and how are labour going to implement anything?

crumblingschools · 05/07/2024 08:49

@Stellarcasted as some calculations show that policy will actually cost rather than raise income, why would it be a good start?

FundingitallHow · 05/07/2024 08:51
  • I would be feeling hopefully had they had some new innovative ideas to try but there has been zilch just "let's bash the better off over the head with a truncheon".

Well... They just won the election so i think it's pretty obvious why people are saying it's incredible for labour. It's the winning the election part that counts.

From the mess they were in when Corbyn was ousted, to now, they've managed to pull themselves together, make themselves credible and they have managed to win a huge majority.

CoastalSunsets · 05/07/2024 08:54

Well a rough guess is fine... im just saying I didn't ask what was going to change or how. Just asked when 😂

Just because you make a thread, doesn't mean you can control what people discuss in it.

It's absolutely ridiculous that you have taken one persons word for it, who only knows as much as the rest of us, and dismissed others, just because you wanted a date. 🤦🏻‍♀️

ICAWS.

crumblingschools · 05/07/2024 08:49

@Stellarcasted as some calculations show that policy will actually cost rather than raise income, why would it be a good start?

Because it's a good start to narrowing the gap between the super rich and the poor in this country. That, and taxing big corporations and closing tax loopholes.

To be honest it was all the whining about VAT on school fees on Mumsnet that most pushed me towards voting labour. It really did demonstrate just how out of touch the upper middle classes are and how desperate they are to protect their privilege. Hopefully labour get on with it.
