When will things change

When will labour start to make changes?

@Stellarcasted but it doesn’t close the gap at all, in fact probably makes it worse. The super rich who can afford the Etons of this world aren’t going to feel the pinch of this policy, and if this policy costs it’s going to hit things like state education

Well a rough guess is fine... im just saying I didn't ask what was going to change or how. Just asked when 😂

Just because you make a thread, doesn't mean you can control what people discuss in it.

It's absolutely ridiculous that you have taken one persons word for it, who only knows as much as the rest of us, and dismissed others, just because you wanted a date. 🤦🏻‍♀️

ICAWS.

That's true faie enough.

A few people said similar. If I want to take the opinions /guess on board that's my choice

Because it's a good start to narrowing the gap between the super rich and the poor in this country. That, and taxing big corporations and closing tax loopholes.

To be honest it was all the whining about VAT on school fees on Mumsnet that most pushed me towards voting labour. It really did demonstrate just how out of touch the upper middle classes are and how desperate they are to protect their privilege. Hopefully labour get on with it.

They have already said it won't happen before Sept 2025.

LadyWhistled0wn · 05/07/2024 09:03

keir will click his fingers and the changes will happen overnight.

They will take years, they said this from the very start. The country is in a very poor state right now they need to hold emergency budgets, the lot then it needs to go through the voting process in parliament.
We will start to see things improve probably next year.

Moonmelodies · 05/07/2024 09:07

I guess one easy step we can expect towards reducing NHS waiting times will be to give the doctors the 35% pay rise they have been demanding, to end the strikes.

2dogsandabudgie · 05/07/2024 09:08

Stellarcasted · 05/07/2024 08:46

That's fine, that would be a great start.

Why is that a great start. I don't have children at private school but people who do already pay taxes towards the running of state schools and then pay again for their own child's private education.

If some people can't afford the extra VAT then they will take their children out of private education meaning there's less spaces in state schools.

Stellarcasted · 05/07/2024 08:52

Well... They just won the election so i think it's pretty obvious why people are saying it's incredible for labour. It's the winning the election part that counts.

From the mess they were in when Corbyn was ousted, to now, they've managed to pull themselves together, make themselves credible and they have managed to win a huge majority.

@Stellarcasted you’ve completely missed my point

PlutarchHeavensbee · 05/07/2024 09:11

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 05/07/2024 07:52

There won’t be any changes. He’ll whack the VAT on private schools as a big flagship move and then everything else will carry on crumbling as it has been.

This. It’s all propaganda to win votes. Anyone expecting major change that will make life easier is going to be disappointed. They all promise the Earth and deliver squat.

The only problem with that is it then has a knock on effect and other workers in the public sector then go on strike thinking they will get a huge pay increase. It is very difficult to get the balance right.

Yes please do tell us @Stellarcasted where the estimated 10,000 plus kids who will be taken out of private education will go to school when the state schools are already full?

Some things change immediately - eg we don't have to disgrace ourselves on an international stage with the cruel and absurd Rwanda scheme. That's gone on day one. That's a change.

Careful, otherwise you'll get called a Tory HQ Bot or something.

Did you not see the BBC report on the thousands of migrants sitting in France waiting for this to happen. The traffickers will be rubbing their hands in glee.

More wringing of hands from disgruntled Conservatives. I find it interesting that there isn't the same wringing of hands and disgruntlement about how shit the Conservative party has become. Of course Labour winning isn't going to be a magic wand where everything gets better by Monday. Of course there will be winners and losers in any changes they make, just like there were winners and losers when the Conservatives took over from Labour. It is the natural cycle.

Let's face it, there was a big need for change as even a die hard Conservative voter would have to admit that they have lost their way.

I think the country could have been run better by the lettuce that outlasted Truss than either her, BoJo, or Sunak, so Starmer, while not perfect, will at least give us a different flavour of shit for a while. It may even be less bitter than the shit the Conservatives served up.

Velicirapitor · 05/07/2024 09:24

Not much will change, it never does.

willWillSmithsmith · 05/07/2024 09:26

Pigeonqueen · 05/07/2024 08:08

Same. I can’t believe people are so naive as to think things will actually be different.

Yes. I’m not holding out much hope for decent change.

The way I see it, people vote for Labour because they’re sick of the Tories. People vote for Tories because they’re sick of Labour. People vote for Labour because they’re sick of the Tories and on it goes …..

I don’t think it’s hand wringing, any more than we saw no contrition from Labour when they bankrupted the country by 2010.

I think it’s early preparation for poking fun at a government that made reckless promises and cheap criticisms when in opposition and now has to come good.

Not a Labour voter but he hasn't made reckless promises.

Stellarcasted · 05/07/2024 09:34

I would reply to those questioning me about school fees but there's been a billion and one threads on that subject so doesnt seem much point.

September 2025 to bring that in seems a reasonable and achievable target.

MrsWhiskerz · 05/07/2024 09:36

It won’t happen over night or even within weeks. it may not happen at all

Changing government is a bit like a dirty affair. Lots of overlap, blended timelines, blame, scandal & the promises come in dribs and drabs. Some promises never materialise and some do, eventually.

Still, change of government is good

Myblindsaredown · 05/07/2024 09:37

I’m also not sure what you are expecting? The first budget I assume and we need to really hope he keeps his promise and doesn’t tax us all heavily to pay as many of us can’t afford it.

Except they have to repeal pesky laws that currently prevent it happening. Plus be taken to court. So don't be too hopeful.

sentfrmmyiphone · 05/07/2024 09:41

you wont see any changes.... it will carry on as it is for a very long time. they promise earth and once they get their foot in the door, they simply laugh and close it behind them!

we have replaced one set of greedy clowns with another

A rough guess of Autumn is fair though. It's been widely publicised that Rachel Reeves won't make a budget without input from the OBR, which is reported to take about 10 weeks. I imagine Labour doesn't have a full proposal right now and will need to think it through some more, so it's probably not unreasonable to think they will deliver something in the Autumn (after allowing for the OBR review).

Rachel Reeves also only wants one major fiscal event a year, so would make sense she would revert back to a full Autumn budget and removing the Spring statement.

10 weeks from now is mid-August, so adding on a few weeks to finalise any policies/delays to OBR analysis makes it September, which is Autumn.

I see a change already! A whole load of corrupt, self-serving, under-qualified idiots have had their arses handed to them and are now seeking alternative employment.
Onwards and upwards!

Absolutely
