Robert Buckland

Buckland won 52.3 % of the vote last time.

26% this time.

The big worry about Reform's success is it means the Tories will move to the right and so in a few years' time we are facing a very nasty right-wing government.

Quite.

It sets the agenda. The labour have to hope that the war on the right gives the space. If they have their own internal left v right issue it doesn't bode well.

Right off for a snooze.

DH is asleep for the second time, and we're on holiday, so I have nowhere else to go, so I may duck out now, but I'll check in as my crap sleep allows

EsmaCannonball · 05/07/2024 00:28

Wish they'd cut from the studio chat when a live result is coming in. We know what the studio guests are going to say but the results are exciting.

pizzaHeart · 05/07/2024 00:29

If Torie voters have to vacate to reform what does that say about Labour?
@lazzapazza nothing but it says a lot about Tory voters.

Jutemat · 05/07/2024 00:31

@Aladdinzane I really dont get BBCs stats. Looking at the real numbers then even if Reform didnt exist, Labour would have held in the 5 declared so far. I think the big difference will come in the more marginal seats where a swing from Tory to Reform has effectively split the vote. Thus far theres been no split vote.

5 years on its own is not long enough to effect lasting change. What Labour need is a shift towards them that is likely to last beyond one term.

I hope they've got that (although I am actually a Green supporter at heart), but it doesn't look like they do.

At the moment it looks as though a Con/Ref merger could beat Labour at the next election. And the Con / Ref parties will have spotted that too. This is what I meant about Farage looking for ways to build influence.

Edited

And yet they took this with a historic defeat last time.

lazzapazza · 05/07/2024 00:33

Anybody else got fuck all interest in the studio chatter? All I want is a little buzzer going off before each result is read out.

You are so right there,@EsmaCannonball .
We need the adrenaline of live action at this point not the mithering on at this time in the morning.
We'll fall asleep otherwise.

I dont think theres a TV crew in every count is there??

duc748 · 05/07/2024 00:38

I just think, I've waited to see the awful Tories defeated for so long, but now, I can't take any pleasure from Labour's victory. And that seems such a shame.

EsmaCannonball · 05/07/2024 00:38

There's always TV cameras at every count. Local television crews are utilised.

spikeandbuffy · 05/07/2024 00:39

My area has been labour since 2000 so wasn't expecting any change, just spotted this on the local website

Reform quite possibly will be 2nd in terms of total numbers of votes.

PickAChew · 05/07/2024 00:47

I'm off to bed. That lot in Spennymoor are slow (well it's a big county).

EsmaCannonball · 05/07/2024 00:47

I meant to have a power nap this evening but got caught up watching Wimbledon. I am quite tired but determined to stay up. I actually rearranged work so I could sleep tomorrow.

It's really complicated in terms of swing and vote share.

I want a blue wall seat to declare soon please.

Callmemel · 05/07/2024 00:47

The Swingometer! Love the analysis with this.

Pebbles16 · 05/07/2024 00:48

The former Swindon MP gave an awesome interview. I am not a Tory but thought he was very genuine and an example of a great local MP
