I agree.
The right will just move further and further, the beast will never be sated, the sunlit uplands will always be just a little further away, just a little step more. A Reform vote looks like throwing good money after bad, Brexit didn't deliver what it promised, so we have to go further to find the pot of gold.
I'm happy for a Labour win, life was much better for ordinary people when they were last to charge, but the rise of Reform is really worrying.

Same, I fully agree.

But there will be some Reform voters who could swing to the left - we need to work out who and where they are, and how to have a dialogue with them.

Another shock result for Reform. It would be interesting if they end up being the opposition. If Labour mess up there could be a massive shift back to the right.

No chance of them being the opposition but I've seen a prediction for them of 17% of the vote.

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2024 23:48

Jutemat · 04/07/2024 23:38

Labour will fuck it all up. Tories will go back to hardline Right to steal back votes from Reform, and Tories will come back. Nigel will head back into the sunset.

The political agenda for the next 5 years has been set tonight. And not by Labour. That's a problem. As the governing party, who has literally just been elected, it's almost a disaster especially since it looks like voters didn't really turn out for Labour with enthusiasm.

Farage dominating the agenda is difficult to tackle. He has nothing to prove. He can spout hot air. Meanwhile Labour have to prove themselves and demonstrate competence and they will be scrutinised for their performance.

Starmer has to deliver. That's not an easy prospect with the economic state.

I said back in 2019 that the Tories had taken the fact that they'd hold those seats in the red wall for granted already in the next election.

It turns out that a one issue election isn't a good indicator.

Yeah, youve just been proved right. Labour wouldnt have dealt with Covid any differently. So we're left with some internal fighting, the Truss fiasco and then unelected Rishi.... but that alone wouldnt have caused this landslide. It's the birth of Reform and the even further Right that has stolen those former Labour voters from Tory.

Liking BBC Laura Kuensberg challenging the guests. Her and Clive Myrie obviously playing 'good cop, bad cop'.

We will have to wait and see the ultimate numbers. But at present I agree. The potential seats are obviously good for Labour. But the actual percentage of people voting for them at perhaps just over a third isn’t great.

I'll be staying up for that one

Sadly according to Wikipedia he stood down this year. I'm gutted. That I'll miss him possibly being kicked out.

Just as long as that "dialogue" isn't telling them how stupid and racist and devoid of critical thinking they are.

I suggest rather than having a dialogue,: actually do something!

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2024 23:49

FundingitallHow · 04/07/2024 23:40

I disagree red.

We've all been through a hideous near 17 years with events out of our control. The global credit crisis was absolutely massive and people seem to to be forget that, remember isis and horrific terrorist attacks, people being beheaded in orange suits, people slaughtered in Paris, London etc Germany. Then covid /Ukraine and so on.
People blame the government that's in, for Europe that's been left center left and for us it's happened to be tory
A lady was on the news after macron called a snap election and she had exactly the same moans as the UK populace does.

Honestly. I hope I'm wrong.

Labour have to do a good job. They have to.

I can't believe what I'm seeing. I'm not sure I could live in a Labour constituency and am already on Right Move looking at other options in case I need to move

EmmaGrundyForPM · 04/07/2024 23:51

@Jutemat is that a typo? Or have you seriously used the word "raping" to describe a Labour win?

Tosh.

Reform split the Tory vote, Labour have gained in places announced so far.

Farage as the leader of a party with 17 seats diminishes in importance. This was his big moment.

Labour will have a massive majority and a mandate for change that they can get through parliament.

Apart from a largest majority since 1832, you mean?

A majority achieved by fragmented opposition rather than mass support.

If as predicted they received 36% of the vote that means that around 3/4 of the popular either didn’t vote or voted against them.

Their vote share will be around 4% higher than the last election when Conservatives achieved an 80 seat majority.

It all points to a very short period in government for Labour as even in the current favourable climate from their perspective they have not been able to attract hardly any additional support.

Watching C4 though I might switch to Sky to listen to Andy Burnham soon.

Knew Reform would do well, I wonder if exit got it slightly wrong for them, but this election is showing how important proportional repreaentation is so important. Every vote should count.

Come on Keir get in and start sorting out tge mess the Tories have left us with.

Doing something is needed, but I do think it's also important to understand the reasons why people vote as they do.

If they're just racists, we'll you can't reason with that. If they're protesting about local deprivation - something can be done.

I completely agree with this analysis and was saying as much earlier to my DH who also agrees.

And I voted Labour, fwiw.

Farage has received half the number of votes as Labour. That is way ahead of expectations.

He has massively outperformed all analysts expectations.

He will be delighted with the outcome. It is almost the perfect result for him.
