Ed Davey as Leader of the Opposition is SO CLOSE

The final MRP poll from Survation puts the Lib Dems and Tories within a gnat's whisker of each other.

Sam Freedman says:
'“If any doubt arises as to which is or was at any material time the party in opposition to Her Majesty’s Government having the greatest numerical strength in the House of Commons, or as to who is or was at any material time the leader in that House of such a party, the question shall be decided for the purposes of this Act by the Speaker of the House of Commons, and his decision, certified in writing under his hand, shall be final and conclusive.”

So if one party is clearly ahead then their leader is LOTO. But if it’s more complex - say, the Tories won 75 seats and the Lib Dems 73, and then two Alliance MPs from Northern Ireland said they’d sit with the Lib Dems - well the Speaker will have to get involved and make a call.'

The thought of the Tories losing so badly that they don't even get to be the official party of opposition is within our grasp.

I've heard that the Lib Dems now think they have a chance of winning places like Witney where they didn't think they had a hope at the start.

https://tactical.vote tells you who to vote for to get the Tories out and make them irrelevant.

Labour are not misogynistic. If you think accurate statements about the legal situation are misogyny you have had a sheltered life.

What the Conservatives did during Covid was misogyny.

You don't think it's misogynistic to describe women who need single sex spaces as "dinosaurs who hoard rights"?

CassieMaddox · 04/07/2024 10:40

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 04/07/2024 10:36

Of course it won't stop being an issue after the election. It will just become more difficult to get women's rights on the table once there's no longer an election coming up.

I think it will be easier once the nastier elements of the online right wing Social Injustice Warriors have stopped thinking there's political capital to be made, got bored and fucked off to try to influence the US elections instead.

And when there are actual government consultations to respond to in a measured way.

I'm looking forward to a change in tone. We'll see soon enough whose vision of the future is more accurate.

  1. David Lammy is one politician
  2. He never said anything about "women needing single sex spaces". He was referring to politicians particularly right wing ones

It's misinformation again to claim he was talking about all GC women. Anti-Left propaganda.

His language speaks volumes about how he sees women, particularly those with different opinions, and it's not edifying.

He's a Labour heavyweight, he hasn't apologised for his comments, and he's not alone in holding these views.

noblegiraffe · 04/07/2024 10:48

No idea why people are talking about David Lammy when the thread is about Ed Davey as leader of the opposition.

The change of tone I would like to see is Labour no longer calling women bigots for wanting discuss our own rights.

Hmm. You know that how? Are you him?
Shadow Justice Secretary David Lammy has told a Labour Party conference fringe event when discussing trans rights this morning that “there are some dinosaurs on the right” and also that “those dinosaurs exist in our own party” who want to “hoard rights”.

That sounds to me like he's talking about politicians, particularly older and mainly right wing ones. It makes me think of men actually, given the demographics of right wing politicians.

Your opinion on this is equally valid to mine. My opinion is this wasn't the level of misogyny it's been portrayed as and its been used as anti left propaganda.

If you can't even be arsed to find out the context of his comments then there is really no point in having this discussion.

On this issue, yes.

Not that it matters since he might not even be an MP tomorrow.

Ah right, so if we cherry pick one issue then we can say Sunak is better.

What about overall?

Labour is going to win a huge majority, regardless of how I vote or don't vote. I'm generally OK with that because I'm generally OK with their policy positions. Except when it comes to women's rights. So that is the aspect I am going to continue to focus on.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 04/07/2024 11:04

OK so who do you think he is talking about when he mentions dinosaurs who hoard rights?

I think he's talking about specific older politicians in the Conservatives and some in his party.
I'm not in parliament so would have no idea who he's referring to.

He specifically says "on the right and in our own party" so he's clearly not talking about female members of the public with concerns.

I don't think what he said was great but the way it's been spun is propaganda in my opinion. It's turned into an urban myth of "Lammy called women rights hoarding dinosaurs", which you are propagating.

Because I think he's talking about Rosie Duffield, who has all but been hounded out of the Labour party for her position on women's rights.

Ah. The Poor Rosie Duffield propaganda.

No. I don't think that. But I think the constant martyring of her by the right is propaganda and not related to actually giving a shit.
How about respecting her agency and the fact that she stays in the party? She obviously doesn't want them out of power, if you respect her vote for her/them, then write to your MP and tell them why

Still waiting for your contextual sources on Lammy BTW 😂

Never said you were, but you've obviously been heavily influenced by right wing propaganda or you wouldn't be posting the way you are.

Do you think you know better than RD about the party? Why has she been out campaigning with other prospective Labour MPs if she doesn't believe in the party?

To be fair Rish! has been out campaigning for the Tory party, and he doesn't believe in them and their policies.
