Ed Davey as Leader of the Opposition is SO CLOSE

The final MRP poll from Survation puts the Lib Dems and Tories within a gnat's whisker of each other.

Sam Freedman says:
'“If any doubt arises as to which is or was at any material time the party in opposition to Her Majesty’s Government having the greatest numerical strength in the House of Commons, or as to who is or was at any material time the leader in that House of such a party, the question shall be decided for the purposes of this Act by the Speaker of the House of Commons, and his decision, certified in writing under his hand, shall be final and conclusive.”

So if one party is clearly ahead then their leader is LOTO. But if it’s more complex - say, the Tories won 75 seats and the Lib Dems 73, and then two Alliance MPs from Northern Ireland said they’d sit with the Lib Dems - well the Speaker will have to get involved and make a call.'

The thought of the Tories losing so badly that they don't even get to be the official party of opposition is within our grasp.

I've heard that the Lib Dems now think they have a chance of winning places like Witney where they didn't think they had a hope at the start.

https://tactical.vote tells you who to vote for to get the Tories out and make them irrelevant.

Ed Davey has grown on me in this GE campaign. Not because of his daft escapades but because I feel I finally have a real sense of him as a person and like him, surprisingly.

I hope he is Leader of the Opposition. He seems genuine, decent, has good ideas and personal integrity.

The Tories. Because the main thing Labour actually need opposing on is the gender nonsense. The Lib Dems will not oppose them on that. I'm not sure the Lib Dems will actually oppose them on anything since there's very little to choose between them in most policy areas.

In the areas where Labour and the Tories are noticeably different (which is not as many areas as you might think) I don't think Labour particularly need opposing and I wish them luck.

Do you really think the tories in opposition will stand up for single sex spaces and women’s rights?? That they will foreground that issue? I would almost guarantee that will not happen. It will cease to be expedient and therefore it will fall to the bottom of the pile of policy priorities.

I don't know. I hope so.

What I do know is that the Lib Dems in opposition would urge Labour towards ever greater woman hating lunacy.

Eh?? This kind of sounds like desperate fearmongering. I genuinely don’t get it and I am an out and out gender critical feminist.

Thank you, I don't understand this either. I've seen so much of it on here lately. It makes no sense to me.

Have you seen/heard what the Lib Dems say to gender critical women?

They'll spend the next 5 years wittering on about immigration, because Farage will be in charge of the agenda. He's going to be the winner on the right tomorrow night.

The Lib Dem's are anti women's rights and very much support the use of puberty blockers and allowing men into women's single sex spaces

There's a Lib Dem councillor called Prue Bray who wades into every debate about where trans identifying sex offenders should serve their prison sentences. Outraged, she is. Not about their crimes, but about the nasty TERFs misgendering them.

And anecdotally, gender critical women who have been canvassed by both Labour and the Lib Dems seem to be saying that when they raise the issue of women's rights the Labour canvassers look uncomfortable and start waffling, whereas the Lib Dems are like, "Ew, a TERF, please don't vote for us."

noblegiraffe · 03/07/2024 22:49

The Tories are self-interested, corrupt, incompetent, Rwanda-obsessed, wealth-grabbing, poverty-creating utter cunts. They've spent the last couple of years trying to find a leader who isn't a total disaster instead of running the country and are going to find out tomorrow that the problem isn't their leader, but them.

And yet their next step will be another fucking leadership contest.

I'm sure they'll do an excellent job in opposition though Hmm

The Tories have a male MP who has declared himself female and started dressing as a female. He couldn't look more male. I don't notice them defending women's rightd.

the2andahalfmillion · 03/07/2024 22:52

Yes. There are TERF- haters in every political party. It’s an ideology characterized by being unusually cross- party in appeal.

Which is precisely why I won’t be voting, at the national level, solely on the basis of individual candidates’ views on biological sex and gender ideology.

Vote for who you think will do most good, on balance.

The difference with the Lib Dems is that they all hate women who insist on believing in biological reality. There is no sane contingent in the Lib Dems. Every last one of them is a misogynistic loony.

The Tories axed plans for self ID and the trans inclusive conversion therapy ban, commissioned the Cass report, brought out schools guidance saying that gender identity theory should be taught as a contested belief rather than fact, and had plans to clarify the Equality Act. They could have done more but they were moving in the right direction finally.

I'm far from convinced that the Jamie Wallis thing wasn't just a stunt to show up the craziness of gender ideology. He isn't trans in any meaningful way.

He has been welcomed by his colleagues as trans, including then, then, PM, Johnson, has bern suppirted by Tory Whips and cabinet ministers, on the basis of self-ID.

MsJinks · 03/07/2024 23:03

I live in a close lib/lab seat - tactical vote is labour, liberals are campaigning the hardest of all so think they’re thinking they can take it - my thought is that if there is a push to get liberal into opposition wouldn’t they be better being voted in in areas like mine - rather than only being suggested where labour really can’t win. I’m sure it’s been considered by a greater mathematical brain than mine though.

Yes and who's to say they didn't all agree to do this to make fun of the TQ+ movement?

Or that Jamie Wallis didn't just claim to be having a gender identity crisis because he got caught driving under the influence?

If he actually believes he identifies as a woman then I'm a monkey's uncle.

Has Davey apologised to the postmasters yet?

Has Badenoch apologised to Henry Staunton? I know it feels like a millenia ago but....

Champagnesocialismo · 03/07/2024 21:17

isnt it the one that Kemi Badenoch is thinking about carefully? Seriously. There is no policy. It’s all suggested by means of speeches and sound bites. Biological sex more recognised, more than now!

I look forward to whatever dribble they come up with in this area after the election.

Just for anyone who is confused, here is Kemi, making it all clear.
She is just what's needed to hold a government to account

He has also had a recorded zoom conversation with Russian fraudsters where he thought he was speaking to Gary Kasparov and said some very inappropriate comments about trans/sexual issues, including that he was happy to arrange for condoms, sex toys, lube and sex toy cleaning products to be sent to Ukrainian gay soldiers who he claimed to have had conversations with and they had asked him for these items. He said we are heading for having a trans PM soon and advocated for the promotion of transgenderism in schools.
