Ed Davey as Leader of the Opposition is SO CLOSE

The final MRP poll from Survation puts the Lib Dems and Tories within a gnat's whisker of each other.

Sam Freedman says:
'“If any doubt arises as to which is or was at any material time the party in opposition to Her Majesty’s Government having the greatest numerical strength in the House of Commons, or as to who is or was at any material time the leader in that House of such a party, the question shall be decided for the purposes of this Act by the Speaker of the House of Commons, and his decision, certified in writing under his hand, shall be final and conclusive.”

So if one party is clearly ahead then their leader is LOTO. But if it’s more complex - say, the Tories won 75 seats and the Lib Dems 73, and then two Alliance MPs from Northern Ireland said they’d sit with the Lib Dems - well the Speaker will have to get involved and make a call.'

The thought of the Tories losing so badly that they don't even get to be the official party of opposition is within our grasp.

I've heard that the Lib Dems now think they have a chance of winning places like Witney where they didn't think they had a hope at the start.

https://tactical.vote tells you who to vote for to get the Tories out and make them irrelevant.

Gender nonsense! what will the Conservatives do? Declare they have had a hard think over 14 years and one day and now they have a policy?

Maybe they are stupid enough to try and rebuild an entire party on gender battles. Assuming Labour are stupid enough to give them one, which is another matter

Who knows what will happen?

But it is a sad indictment of the state of the country that people are so fed up with the Tories that the man who says women can have penises looks like the best candidate for prime minister.

That is indeed what the law of the land says, a law that could have been changed at any point over the past 14 years, if the government had wanted to.

Has Davey apologised to the postmasters yet?

What it means is that the Conservatives have been unable to deliver a policy that many on here regard as so obvious that it nears the same clarity as the sky being blue.

Multiply this political genius since 2019 and it’s not hard to see why they will lose and the state of the country follows, does it not? According to some, this should be a winner. Yet it isn’t.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/07/2024 21:11

Good point well made @Champagnesocialismo

He’s obviously fit technically. Just not on my oaf-meter

radio4everyday · 03/07/2024 21:11

Great. A PM who thinks that men can have a cervix and a leader of the opposition who thinks a woman can have a penis. Not an ounce of biological knowledge between them. we're doomed.

Which policy are you referring to?

Champagnesocialismo · 03/07/2024 21:17

isnt it the one that Kemi Badenoch is thinking about carefully? Seriously. There is no policy. It’s all suggested by means of speeches and sound bites. Biological sex more recognised, more than now!

I look forward to whatever dribble they come up with in this area after the election.

Oh, so you're not referring to a policy at all then.

As you were.

FiveFoxes · 03/07/2024 21:21

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 03/07/2024 20:42

Well exactly. If you're going to have a graduate tax then have a graduate tax and then what graduates pay has a direct correlation with how much they earn (i.e. how much financial benefit they've got from their education). The current system means that people who get a university education but then earn peanuts pay off little or nothing, very high earners pay off the full amount but pay it off fast, and mid range earners such as teachers and civil servants pay off the most because they pay off more than the investment bankers and corporate lawyers do once 40 years of compound interest are added. There's a big bulge affecting the squeezed middle, who are probably also being squeezed in all other areas.

Also the fact that those from poorer backgrounds get higher loans, so the poorer your parents are, the more you end up borrowing.

But all three parties are to blame for tuition fees. Don't forget that.

Lib dem can form the opposition, NOT Tories, if we vote tactically. "StopTheTories.vote" - article in The Guardian by Carol Vorderman on using this website, and similar tactical voting websites, that will prevent the Tories getting in and consign them to third 😃 . After this comes proportional representation. Vote tactically 😃 and get rid of them for good! Next time, all of our votes could count, whatever the party is. There's a plan. Read the article.

There is a great danger in voting tactically that you are voting against a party so many people will not even be fully aware of what they are voting for.
There could be real unintended consequences

Yes. I've seen a lot of people saying they will vote tactically for the Lib Dems and saying things like it will be a return to sensible grown up politics, and it's making me wonder whether they've even listened to a word the Lib Dems have said in the last five years or how they've treated people - particularly women - who disagree with them. The sensible, moderate Lib Dems of the past don't exist anymore.

Have you listened to a word the Tories have said in the last 5 years? Seen how they've treated women?

The Tories. Because the main thing Labour actually need opposing on is the gender nonsense. The Lib Dems will not oppose them on that. I'm not sure the Lib Dems will actually oppose them on anything since there's very little to choose between them in most policy areas.

In the areas where Labour and the Tories are noticeably different (which is not as many areas as you might think) I don't think Labour particularly need opposing and I wish them luck.

Zonder · 03/07/2024 22:07

Anyone else hear ED on the news tonight saying things have to change after all that has gone wrong in the past 14 years. Some of that 14 years he was in government! Short memory.
