General election 2024

Everyone at work voting Reform

People can vote for whichever party they want to vote for, but I feel pretty disheartened at the amount of Reform voters I work with. They think it's funny, and that Farage has all the answers for them. They don't try to hide their racism, and even seem proud of it. I know they are trying to wind me up, but I just try to keep quiet in the corner as I know they all see me as a woke leftie. Having been excited to see the back of the Tories for at least a good few years, I'm just feeling deflated at the views of people I spend most of my time with. They're even talking about Kylian Mbappe's stance on the French elections now, with the usual "stick to the football" comment. Not sure what I want from this thread, just expressing my worries.

Unbelievable. None so blind as those that won't see.

😂

TheShyPeachKoala · 01/07/2024 16:26

Because they are looking after Britain and the rights of our people on all the policies that matter - taxation, immigration, NHS, benefits.

Pemba · 01/07/2024 16:34

Sorry about the picture!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 01/07/2024 16:34

There is such political ignorance in this country. Farage and his ilk will cause a heap of damage and help nobody but themselves. Also, immigration is absolutely not the cause of the issues we face as a country.

I have asked about reform policies attraction in a few places but not got an answer- why is privatising the NHS probably USA style a policy anyone bar insurance co owners want for the U.K.? Why are the completely unworkable immigration policies worth more than the barely workable Rwanda plan even?
Anyway, I hope you can just avoid engaging OP - avoid the topic after Friday at least? Many years ago I’m sure generally political discussions weren’t so divisive and full of hatred and fear. I have an opinion on how that’s been ushered in though. I’m honestly not sure personally why folk are so proud of voting reform they share it - no shy voter there! - as long as they don’t then tell me endlessly why it’s best I’d cope - I’m aware voters of all colours can be prone to this, which is not really the best thing in most casual interactions- never discuss politics, religion, sex is it?

Riffraffarchitect · 01/07/2024 16:39

I work in construction and nobody is voting Reform, Lib Dems or Labour. It’s hot topic on site and in the office. I’m in a poor part of the UK

In fact, it looks like everyone must be a secret Tory supporter. But won’t admit it.

Which makes me ponder how accurate the Polls are if Tory voters aren’t admitting to voting Tory?

(full disclosure: I am on the fence and haven’t decided between Tory and Labour yet!)

cavalier · 01/07/2024 16:42

Well that is encouraging

StaunchMomma · 01/07/2024 16:42

Arseholes.

They know Farage is a liar - he lied to us all over Brexit and he's doing it again.

The Reform manifesto reads as a far-right wish list for racists and Nationalists and he openly admits that he doesn't need to worry about costing any of it because he knows they're not going to get in (financial experts have costed it - it would result in a financial crisis at least twice the size of the Liz Truss debacle).

Reform voters love the racist narrative, though. How anyone could see that frog-faced fascist as a 'good bloke' will forever be beyond me.

The rise of the far right is a scourge on our country.

Look across Europe, look at what's happening in France right now. There are a lot of people who are voting for very right wing parties at the moment. It is worrying but I think it's in reaction to feeling that globalist policies are being pushed by all centrist parties.

As for Brexit, I struggle to find positives for the nation, but for some individuals there have been plus points. Lots of my family voted to leave who work in trades and low level jobs and have seen significant increase in wages since there's been reduced competition for jobs.

I'll be biting my tongue and voting Labour, but I won't be doing it happily given their stance on women's rights. It should be an easy choice given how shit the Tories are but incredibly it isn't.

cavalier · 01/07/2024 16:45

Cryingout1994 · 01/07/2024 15:33

Why do you disclose your vote? If someone asked me I'd refuse to answer it's personal likewise I'd never ask someone who theyre voting for I think it's rude

I just tell them the opposite main party😂
in real life I don’t discuss all this on here
it would just make for a war of words and I can’t be asked lol

MoonshineSon · 01/07/2024 16:45

JennieLec · 01/07/2024 14:31

They are all wasting their votes! To keep Labour from a supermajority, they need to vote Tory.

"supermajority" doesn't make sense in the UK it's been wrong appropriated by the right to put fear in people.

TeenagersAngst · 01/07/2024 16:51

A super majority does make sense in the context that there's no practical opposition in Parliament. It is not good for democracy.

You may well think it's been appropriated but surely everyone can see that opposition parties with less than 100 seats have their powers severely curtailed.

I think workplaces can reach a critical mass and then it seems like everyone has the same opinions.

I used to be a TA and I'm sure lots of the staff at my school would have asserted that everyone in the staffroom voted Labour. They didn't, but some of the Labour voters were very vocal and derogatory about people [in general] who didn't share their politics, so if you were a Conservative you'd keep quiet or only speak to others you suspected were sympathetic.

Sounds like you've got the Reform version of that. It's unpleasant feeling like an outsider at work, sorry I don't have any solutions other than just trying to ignore them. Hopefully it'll quieten down after the election.

Same as NHS, mixed bag. Majority of my team voted conservative last election (from the few conversations we’ve had about it), think it will be a mixture this time from comments people have said. Nobody seems overly inspired by anyone.

hamstersarse · 01/07/2024 14:56

What is it exactly that offends you so much about Reform?

Which of their policies makes you angry?

Some of their policies are OK but uncoated so not an issue as they won't get into power. The main factor stopping people voting for them is the blatant racist undertones to the party and people who are racists won't want to be associated with racism.

the irony ....

HiddenBooks · 01/07/2024 17:09

A colleague of mine is voting in her first GE. She's taking it very seriously and has spent time researching all of the candidates in her constituency, looking at them as individuals and the parties they represent, going through their leaflets and seeing which one she aligns herself with mostly.

She is in her 40s and moved over here from the middle east (think Iraq/Iran region).

Based on her research, the candidate that stands for mainly what she agrees with is the Reform candidate! I don't think she can quite bring herself to vote for them, but it shows that there's things in each person's campaign that people can agree with.

That said, I definitely could not put up with a workforce like OPs. I cannot abide racism and would end up causing big trouble at work if they were being openly racist.

Yep you nailed it. And the rise of the far right isn’t just happening in UK unfortunately, it seems to be much wider than that. Scary times 🙁

Oh I know. I've called it out with a colleague before. He was moaning about people coming over here and taking jobs all because they want their children to have a better life. I pointed out that he'd moved over here when he got married for that exact same reason!

Bewareofthisonetoo · 01/07/2024 17:15

Solymoly · 01/07/2024 14:59

Maybe they are winding you up if you proclaimed you were a Labour voter, I probably would.

This’ 😂😂😂

Allthislovelygreen · 01/07/2024 17:20

To be fair OP, it sounds like they all do have a sense of unity except for you if they're all voting Reform.

Probably not worth leaving a job over, but it's underestimated how lonely it can make you when you're an odd one out at work
