Labour hate people like me

I feel sick at the thought of how much our lives are going to change.

This is not a thread to bash or criticise people nervous about Labour. It’s a place for those of us who are feeling very anxious to have a bit of space - it’s not something we are ‘allowed’ to say in public without being called ‘scum’ ‘selfish tories’ or similar. I’m not particularly linked to any party and not sure how to vote, I may spoil my ballot.

Labour have made it very clear that they intend to make us poorer and our lives harder.
I’m a woman - Labour intend to remove women’s rights
I’m rural - Labour aren’t interested in rural areas
I work in a private school - enough said
I have teens - I expect Labour to put vat on uni fees
We both work full time and have slogged our guts out to now be in a position where we have a comfortable (but not high) income - I expect to be taxed more heavily.
We have elderly parents - I expect the cost of care and inheritance tax to increase.

Maybe it’s selfish but we’re screwed and I don’t expect that what we lose will be put to efficient or good use. It feels like we will be punished for having worked hard and being ambitious.

I do wish people would read the original post properly but I suppose if you are already determined that one particular way is the way forward you'll skip over the bits of the OP's post that are inconvenient. She's undecided, never said she was pro Tory and is worried about some Labour manifesto claims and between the lines bits. It's reasonable to be concerned about one's personal circumstances and it doesn't mean she's a callous right wing zealot who doesn't care about other people!

In my time I have lived with Labour, Conservative, New Labour (distinction there), coalition (often forgotten) and Conservative.

The New Labour government was ushered in during a boom period through which they were able to capitalise on spending, much of it beneficial. What's generally happened since 1945 is Labour comes in and spends/creates on things that are widely beneficial (NHS, workers' rights, wages etc). Then we run out of money and Tories come in and reduce the size of the public sector, welfare state etc to pay some of it back but note they very rarely get rid of things Labour have brought in. Labour historically have also spent far more on Defence than Tories. However, I found the 13 years of New Labour really hard for several reasons from a personal perspective whilst acknowledging what they did bring in for wider benefit.

I found the day to day interfering in life really meddlesome. I was personally affected by them lying about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, getting into bed with George W Bush (a Republican), invading Iraq and the countless, countless lives lost for a LIE. Also the countless lives lost in Afghanistan. The odd deaths of people close to Blair who disagreed with him. His megalomania.

Also let's all remember much of what New Labour was seen to usher in was already in policy and foundations laid by Tories such as the Good Friday agreement.
Free uni tuition ended under New Labour.

The Coalition Govt made the tuition fee situation worse. Austerity didn't work and we would have bounced back better with fiscal stimulus. I was a huge supporter of Gordon Brown's efforts like reducing VAT to 15% (such a difference) car scrappage scheme etc.

Then a Tory government melange cocked up by Brexit then pandemic then war in Europe then Gaza.

@SeriaMau Can I double-check your post is a joke? I assumed so, but I've seen two people now respond to it in earnest, and I'm having doubts.

Under the Conservatives the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, every time.

I'm part of the "middle", I don't know if I'm near the top end of that middle or the bottom end, but if I need to get a little bit poorer in order for a poor person to get a little bit richer, I am happy to do so. I want to live in a more equal society as research shows that people who live in more equal societies have an overall happier life.

I honestly cannot believe the level of blatant corruption we have put up with from this government either. Wtf is wrong with people, that we've sat back and let the Tories give away our tax money to their mates?

Sadly not always true. Also happened under New Labour too.

OSU · 30/06/2024 10:11

Labour just as affected by the expenses scandal as Tories...

Meadowtrees · 30/06/2024 10:11

Calypig - No, I’m not loaded but both sets of parents own their houses and, not unreasonably, they’d like to be able to pass some money on to their grandchildren.

Same here. I’m an ordinary person and I understand that Labour intend to take away my life’s savings and double VAT on food. I don’t know how I will cope. I would leave the country but I expect Labour to seal the borders.

She may have read it, but I think her anxiety is providing information that isn't there. That's understandable if you are an anxious person but it's essential for your own well being that you let your brain do the thinking rather than the anxiety itself. Where is the evidence for what she's worrying about?

I'm sure she would say the same to the kids in the school she works in.

I find the prospect of either the tories or Labour winning equally terrifying, to be honest. In my area though, voting for anyone other than one of those is a wasted vote. What it comes down to, for me, is - has life (not just mine, but for the country as a whole) got better in the last 14 years? And the answer I get is no. So I can’t vote conservative. I just can’t.

Meadowtrees · 30/06/2024 10:18

Thank you OSU. The personal attacks / assumptions I’ve received in what I particularly requested as a place free from such has reinforced my worries that Labour don’t care about people like me - they’ve literally said so. I’d really like Labour supporters to define what they mean by wealthy - I think a lot of people who think Labour will help them are about to be shocked when they realise that Labour considers them wealthy. Labour is very ‘us and them’ but I don’t think they’ve been at all honest about the ‘squeezed middle’ who are going to suffer. Many people in that bracket aren’t high earners and are just about managing.

OhWhenWillSummerArrive · 30/06/2024 10:19

I hear you OP

I’m not voting Tory, and they’ve been a bunch of liars, but I think ultimately Labour will be worse.

As soon as they get in, certain groups will feel emboldened. They will think they’ve got an unregulated platform to run roughshod over others.

I fully expect to be shafted on taxes under Labour.

My DC are at Indy school but I think they’ll be finished by the time the VAT has gone through.

DH and I have discussed it, and decided it’s time to start saving hard and not spend any money until we see what happens under Labour. Plus from now on I’m not sitting back and sucking up paying private for stuff. I’ll use public services, just like other tax payers where I can.

Then there’s the people waiting in the wings that we are going to have to listen to after 04 July that’s going to make me want to stab my eardrums; Tony BLiar, Diane Abbott, Jeremy Corby - all the puppet masters pulling Kier’s strings.

Spinet- of course I’m anxious!! I don’t want to lose my job!!

I feel politically homeless.
I'm in my thirties, pregnant with my 3rd child, my husband and I have worked hard to get where we are. We live rurally, send our children to state school and use local nursery, but my husband also works for a private school (I also teach in the state sector so am very clear how the conservative government have caused damage). The school my husband works at is a large employer in the local area, but it is a fairly small school and would be hit hard by changes. If my husband loses his job, which would be very possible, it would be disastrous for our family. I think state education needs more than just extra money - the issues are complex and multifaceted.

I can't vote conservative but can't see how Labour will make life better.

Spinet · 30/06/2024 10:24

Meadowtrees · 30/06/2024 10:19

Spinet- of course I’m anxious!! I don’t want to lose my job!!

Has your work given you to understand you will lose your job when labour gets in?

Have you read in the labour manifesto you will lose your job?

Has the manifesto said your parents will be able to leave no money to their grandchildren?

Has it said they will put VAT on university fees making university more expensive for it children?

I understand you are not willing to give up even a small amount of your comfort so that others can have enough to eat and it's very honest of you to say so - but you are allowing your anxiety to make things up. Just like saying a political party 'hates' you is a bit delusional.

countrygirl99 · 30/06/2024 10:26

According to HMRC data the number of higher rate tax payers and the number of over 65s paying income tax have doubled since 2010. All under a Conservative government.

Sadly not always true. Also happened under New Labour too.

Did it though? Or did the rich get richer and the poor got richer too? Genuine question btw. I'm just going by what I've read here:

Unemployment always goes up under Labour, they ceased to be the party for the working class many decades ago. Lovies yes, working people no.

I'd go as far as to say don't take ANYTHING you read in the Telegraph as a statement of fact!

So you subscribe to the Telegraph then?….

Kendodd · 30/06/2024 10:40

I'm in a very similar position and can't wait for a Labour Government. I'm old enough to remember the last one and how much better life was for ordinary people. Even, what should be the simplest of things, like getting a dentist, was so much easier. I can't think of a single thing that is better under the Tories. We're higher earners, teen children, business owners and landlords.

That's a phrase I never thought I'd say!

Cor....Conservative HQ are busy on mumsnet lately aren't they? All these anti Labour propaganda posts!!!

The world will END under Labour!!!!!!

spuddy4 · 30/06/2024 10:44

I don't understand everyone saying how good things were under the last labour government. There was no money left for the next government and they sold the countries gold reserves so they obviously couldn't balance the books any better than the Tories.
