Labour hate people like me

I feel sick at the thought of how much our lives are going to change.

This is not a thread to bash or criticise people nervous about Labour. It’s a place for those of us who are feeling very anxious to have a bit of space - it’s not something we are ‘allowed’ to say in public without being called ‘scum’ ‘selfish tories’ or similar. I’m not particularly linked to any party and not sure how to vote, I may spoil my ballot.

Labour have made it very clear that they intend to make us poorer and our lives harder.
I’m a woman - Labour intend to remove women’s rights
I’m rural - Labour aren’t interested in rural areas
I work in a private school - enough said
I have teens - I expect Labour to put vat on uni fees
We both work full time and have slogged our guts out to now be in a position where we have a comfortable (but not high) income - I expect to be taxed more heavily.
We have elderly parents - I expect the cost of care and inheritance tax to increase.

Maybe it’s selfish but we’re screwed and I don’t expect that what we lose will be put to efficient or good use. It feels like we will be punished for having worked hard and being ambitious.

YANBU. We feel the same. What's really galling is that I don't sense any particular enthusiasm for Labour or Keir Starmer - it's just that people are sick of the way the Conservatives have mismanaged things and after 14 years in power they've run out of ideas.

The Labour Party was led by Jeremy Corbyn just five short years ago - and those same people who served under him are about to take power. Under Corbyn they were un-electable, but with dreary, sit-on-the-fence Starmer in charge, and a fed up and disaffected electorate, they'll win because they're the only viable alternative.

The West is in serious trouble - no wonder Putin and Xi are being bold - they can see our weakness.

I was prepared to disagree on the title but I don't think you are wrong.

Most food doesn't even have VAT on it

Yes I know.

CranfordScones · 30/06/2024 11:27

They don't hate you as much as they hate themselves. Biggest bunch of self-loathers who encourage aspiration just so they can denounce anyone who dares to actually become successful, or who has the temerity to want to enjoy the fruits of their own hard work.

Midnight- I don’t read the telegraph. I don’t like any of the current parties. I’d like a sane, rational, centrist party that rewards hard work and supports the vulnerable. I think a lot of people are going to be very disappointed when Labour fail to deliver positive changes.

Yes, agree with you here. I can’t put my vote behind any of the parties currently. For the first time in my life, I won’t be voting in an election that I’m registered to vote for. It’s so sad.

NanFlanders · 30/06/2024 11:29

I don't think you need to worry. I'm in a similar position to you (well, not rural and don't work in a private school, but elderly mum with Alzheimer's and teens off to uni. Also gender critical). I've worked very hard and am a higher rate tax payer, (N.B. And been fortunate - I know lots of people , including carers etc.n work harder than me, but still end up having to use food banks) but I would happily pay more so that my 90 year old Fil didn't have to pay £7.5k to go private for an op that under the current state of the NHS under the Tories he would have to wait 18 months for. The potholes in my road are shocking - my friend went head over his handlebars on his bike and got a serious head injury. My daughter's school has no qualified maths teachers below year 11. I can't see why there would be VAT on uni tuition fees - as previous poster said, this would be a massive own goal as state ends up paying off a lot of these. As for costs of social care for tbe elderly, this has rocketed under the Tories - with the exception of Labour-run Wales and SNP-run Scotland. Not bothered about inheritance tax - I kind of think you should pay something if you inherit more than a million quid off your parents - which is the point at which inheritance tax kicks in.

That is ridiculous, no way will Labour do that.
They won't have any single sex spaces

By women I meant men in dubious wigs.

sleepyscientist · 30/06/2024 11:31

I'm a woman - not bothered about the XX/XY debate. I think it's time we did have a change and move to a sexless society which benefits everyone regardless of genetics. I think we have gone too far with protecting woman that men are seen as second class citizens presumed guilty no matter what. As the mum of a boy that worries me a lot more than someone getting a sneaky picture of me in a changing room.

Care homes - again not interested more interested in assisted dying.

Tax - is the biggest one for me, the incentive to earn more isn't there when you lose 50% of it to tax. Add on the likely target of inheritance tax why are we working hard. The effect that will be having on the country with people not striving for the best life possible is not to be understated.

At the end of the day we work hard to give our son everything we can I don't oppose generational wealth. I got help from my parents and worked hard so DS can have the same if not more. Everyone can do that our degrees do dictate our 9-5 but a considerable amount of our income comes from a side hustle everyone can do and we don't sacrifice family time for it just sleep.

MadameMassiveSalad · 30/06/2024 11:32

They don't hate you op.
They just care about making a fairer society.
We will all benefit from that.

Wow. How empathetic to the people with less than you.

I had sympathy, not so much now

I agree there's been people having to go to food banks, going without food so their children can eat. No heating. Struggling for very basic things.

I really wounder if people actually truly get it.

They approve of aspiration but only state approved aspiration.

Well, yeah. We all know that there are plenty of selfish people who don't give a shit about anyone else. What's new? Thankfully you're not in a majority (this time).

What does this mean Himler?“

Unfair and offensive. Many, many people prefer the option of assisted dying for themselves.

Meadowfinch · 30/06/2024 11:35

You have my sympathy OP.

I'm a single mum. I have full time care of my ds(15), and I work full time, with an income of mid £50s.

My ds has a 50% maths scholarship at a private school. It costs me every spare £ I earn, but he was desperate to take it up. I need to travel for my job, and I have no family help at all. Ex has ds 20 nights a year, has never done a school run or a parent's evening. If I need to travel, the school is my safety net. If I get stuck on a closed motorway or behind a red signal, I can call the school who will give him his tea and if necessary hang on to him overnight as an 'occasional boarder'.

Without their help, I will have to give up my job. I'm 61 so the chances of me getting a different job are virtually nil.

DS has just finished his GCSEs. On track for good grades. I've got him this far by myself. I am doing my best

DS wants to do maths & science A'levels then read engineering at Imperial. VAT on fees for 6th form and then VAT on university. I'll manage 6th form but that will exhaust my savings. How will we manage university?

I thought the UK needed STEM graduates. A well educated and numerate workforce. Yet Labour seem determined to reduce everyone to the lowest common denominator. They seem to hate anyone achieving anything.

Labour is a party of division. They promote toxic victimhood.

The only benefit that will result from their hopefully single term in office will be to refresh people’s minds about just how appalling and destructive they are.

It feels as if we are about to be punished.

Good grief! Are you speaking from Planet Privelige? Do you truly believe the last 14 years have been "fine and dandy"?

The VAT on private schools is hardly a tax on education. Why should poorer families fund a tax break for richer children to get an education that they are themselves not getting?
I am not a Labour voter but, It's hard to argue that life in the UK wasn't better under a Labour government last time. I am lucky enough to earn a decent salary, I am poorer under the Conservatives due to austerity driven wage stagnation and inflation, but I know thousands are immeasurably worse off. If a Labour government makes life better for them, then I support it. Public services, which make life better for everyone, need investment and as a higher earner I have no issue with playing my part

Please explain exactly how private schools get a tax break when:

  • they are charged VAT on all purchases but can not reclaim it
  • every child in private school saves the state 7-8K per year and as a sector saves the state £40 billion per year

What tax breaks are you talking about or are you just parroting Labour?

Cattysm · 30/06/2024 11:39

Please can we move away from this rhetoric that people on higher incomes work harder, therefore are somehow more deserving? It’s disgusting and completely untrue. Labour don’t ’hate people that work hard’. What do you think care assistants on minimum wage do, sit on their arses all day?

I didn’t say that at all. That was another poster.

I’m expressing the opinion of many, that assisted dying is a very valid option. To suggest that anyone who wishes it for themself or loved ones in pain and distress is akin to Himler is what is offensive.

FyodorDForever · 30/06/2024 11:45

Maybe it is about time to take your share of the burden
The difficulty comes because people are asked to ‘take their share of the burden’ when they are already the ones taking most of the share.

In other words: people who already receive money from the state are asking the ones who don’t to pay even more.

Similarly for schools: state school needs money, let’s ask the people who contribute despite not using their place to contribute even more.
