Sorry if it is a dumb question but what is the issue behind the 2019 elections and Starmer support to Corbyn? Why is it still a big deal?

The thread is about Starmer and Corbyn. It relates to his relationship with Corbyn and the last manifesto.

Some of the policies from the 2019 election were: increase the health budget by 4.3 percent, raise in minimum wage to £10, stop pension age rises and nationalise key industries. There's nothing extremist there.

Far left is on the extreme end of the political spectrum. An example of the far left is Stalin's Russia. Bringing forward net zero targets or increasing the minimum wage, isn't far left.

I'm still waiting for examples of the leftie 'loonies' that proliferated the party under Corbyn.

Corbyn's other policies were increasing corporation tax, increasing income tax for higher rate payers, additional windfall taxes, and changes to dividend tax. Ironically, the Conservative party have implemented a good many of those in some form or another, although not in as extreme a manner as Corbyn proposed.

As I said, look at the MARPOR studies, there is a whole database of comparative data.

Also, we are talking about UK politics. So, Corbyn is far left in the UK, Farage is far right. I know that Corbyn has admiration for views even further left than those he publicly stated in the UK (Castro and Chavez to name two), but I was not comparing him to the likes of Stalin no matter how much Corbyn may admire him.

If that wasn't such a dangerous, partisan lie it would be amusing. As it is, it just highlights your ignorance and sends shivers down my spine 🙄

😂

Farage isn't far right. He's a right wing populist. There isn't such a thing as far left 'in UK politics '. Nothing in the manifesto was extremist.

How can Corbyn have had views more far left than far left extremism? Of course you're comparing him to people like Stalin; he's far left.

It's not a big deal. It's the Daily Mail's way of saying 'ooh look out Starmer is a horrible socialist' without coming right out and saying it.

This

Kier has gone more centrist because the left wing manifesto under JC didn’t have electoral success, probably because people felt it was unrealistic more than they didn’t want the things promised. So now Labour are promising a lot less. It’s not really a major issue. It’s just learning from previous mistakes.

I wasn't comparing him to people like Stalin, it was you brought Stalin into the discussion. Also, you need to read my post more thoroughly. I was saying that Corbyn's publicised views are not as extreme as some, but that he has a lot of admiration for those further extreme than he is.

What I was saying was that Corbyn is far left when considering UK politics, which I think you have endorsed.

Oh honestly @cavalier what a waste of time engaging with you.

Truth hurts thats the problem
Corbyn is a real fly in the ointment and look at all the media … its practically saying so too .. most of it
it’s a real bad issue
Naivety is rife with Labour supporters

You called him an extremist and far left.

Anyway, it's been a pleasure.

Don’t worry his nickname is sometime Keir Stalin lol

YouAreAllMySymmetry · 21/06/2024 19:04

Ok. How is Corbyn a fly in the ointment. He was an unpopular fairly short lived and ineffective leader five years ago.

You can keep trying to harp on and on about him but most sensible people are not really interested in your 'oh look, a communist squirrel' nonsense.

Yes, extreme and far left compared to the rest of the UK.

It has indeed been a pleasure.

I don't think it's opportunistic or inauthentic to change your mind. On the other hand if you spend your entire life dogmatically refusing to learn and change, you're a fucking simpleton.

You entirely missed the point. It’s fine to change your mind but that’s not what Starmer is doing. He is the opportunistic and inauthentic one. He hasn’t reflected and refined his view. He is just saying anything that will get him elected. He basically admitted to saying ‘Corbyn would make a great PM’ only because he ‘knew they wouldn’t win’. He actually said that aloud in front of an tv audience!!

The Labour Party elected Corbyn as it's leader. Keir is a member of the Labour party, as am i. I personally didn't agree with much of what Corbyn stood for, neither did Keir.

But Keir stood by Corbyn, as did i, during the Johnson election.

It's called democracy. I didnt, wouldnt, vote for Corbyn. Others in the party did. The majority did. So I accepted it. So did Keir.

so hang the both of us for accepting the will of the majority. Because we both believe that the majority of the voting view should prevail. It's not about being popular, it's about having a sense of principles.

I've hated many things this government has done over 14 years, but I've had to accept them. That's what Starmner did.

That's not how I remember it all.

When Starmer won the Labour leadership, in his victory speech, he said: “I want to pay tribute to Jeremy Corbyn, who led our party through some really difficult times, who energised our movement, and who’s a friend as well as a colleague.”

Err, wasn't he the one who said "the EU is such a good thing that if we didn't have it, we'd have to invent it" not long before he decided that backing leave would likely get him the PM job? That's a pretty big flip flop in my book. Not to mention years of being a proven liar, and not even being able to quote how many children he has. **

**don't mistake disdain for Boris as support for Starmer.

Corbyn was a terrifying leader of the labour party and potential PM, which lots of people even in the labour party realised. Apparently Starmer thought he would be a great PM, which is not helping his course.

Sums him up pretty well. Going strong on his family rather than sticking to answers or clarity

Yeah but Starmer is a consistent offender with the flip flopping .. that’s the only consistency he’s got
flipity flop … Flop being the operative word when he opens his mouth .. Don’t give him a shovel as he does well enough himself in that area lol

user1471453601 · 21/06/2024 20:41

@cupcaske123 what was he supposed to say, while also honouring the electorate who'd just elected him? Rubbish their previous decision? That defies reality.

and @Bumblebeeinatree C.corbyn was a lot of things, but terrifying wasn't one of them. My objection to him was his failure to get the vote our against Brexit.

I'm old enough to remember some of the left of the Labour party being against joining. Apparently it was a club for employers. Nonsense, of course. But people like Corbyn never moved on from that position. I have.

I refer my learned friend back to my previous comment. It worked for Boris. 🤣

About the only consistent thing was the old catch phrase of "get Brexshit done", but then he didn't. His deal was worse than the one May proposed.

YouAreAllMySymmetry · 21/06/2024 20:54

Plus it took him weeks to decide if he was pro or anti Brexit, then he chose pro when he saw it would advantage his career.

Super principled 😁
