He should care - and he knows that he made a mistake, hence his apology.
I can not find one thing to like about the man. He won't be getting my vote.

crackofdoom · 07/06/2024 09:20

Rishi Sunak may be of Indian heritage, like a lot of British people, but he is British. (And Commonwealth troops, including Indians, played a big role in WW2, although not necessarily the Normandy landings).

But that out of the way....no, it wasn't a good look. Dreadful optics, and playing straight into the hands of Reform. He has no feel for this kind of thing- look at all the helicopter trips when polling suggests that support for green measures is so high.

Because there's an election approaching, and he has to pretend to "care" about many things he has no interest in. Also, it's extremely disrespectful.

Westfacing · 07/06/2024 09:33

I heard a few minutes ago on Times Radio that originally he wasn't going at all, and the half-day visit was a compromise!

Talk about no political nouse, nor awareness of the importance of the event!

He's apologised so he knows it was wrong - just how didn't he see that?

He knows he will lose so I think he's mentally checked-out - he should just step away now!

Er, because he's the Prime Minister?!

atotalshambles · 07/06/2024 09:38

I think he has given up. The country is facing such huge issues - NHS falling apart, education under stress, huge government debt, productivity is low and really whoever wins the election will need to be honest with the electorate. I don't blame him. I think I would be legging it to California as well as soon as possible. I feel really sorry for Keir Starmer.

Because he's a representative of GB and our prime minister I can't believe him and his advisors thought this was OK. It's almost like he doesn't want to be re elected !

I think you're showing your own mindset here, saying he wouldn't care because he's Indian and that no-one would ever vote for him because if his ethnicity.

Neither of those explanations would ever have entered my head. People won't vote for him because of what the Tories have done to this country while they have been in power.

I do wonder at what British means if you don’t face time for this. Ignorant, arrogant man

The most ignorant post I've read in 2024, the award is yours!!

Anyone who has some, little knowledge of WW1/2 will know that "India(n)" men and women fought alongside and or for the free world against the Germans and Japan and that is fact.

Even more men and women from India gave up their lives fighting for freedom and stood shoulder to shoulder with England and the free world, fact!!

/thnak you - I got very angery with the post I just quoted and just read yours - thanks

Yes, Sunak was wrong and he has apologised, rightly so

Some may recall the Labour leader, I forget his name but he was often accused of "disrespect" when he attended the Remeberence days services by the outfit he wore - just recalled his name - Micahel Foot!!

We don't vote for Prime Ministers. We vote for political parties as represented by parliamentary candidates in our constituency.

And to conclude that swathes of people aren't voting Tory just because Rishi Sunak is Indian is ridiculous. It isn't just Sunak who is loathed - it is his entire government, which includes people of all kinds of ethnic backgrounds.

He was born and educated in England - whats it go to do with where his parents were born?? Many people, kids etc as well as adults know very little re WW1 and 2 - whats your point, Bud??

Sunak has contributed a lot more taxes than you ever could - would you have said the same if Gordon Brown did that or B Johnson??

You are only saying this as his skin is not white, IMO (I stand corrected if you say you would not have said this to Tony Blair)/Boris Jognson etc) as he was born in England, educated in England went to uni in England - holds aBrit passport - so why bring in the country of his parents were born in??? You would not have said this otherwise as he was born in England!!!

"British" means having British citizenship, which one acquires either through birth or through naturalisation. It has nothing to do with either ethnic heritage or with one's views on D Day.

Michael Foot was accused of this once, 43 years ago.
At least he bothered to turn up, not fuck off to do a TV interview.

But Keir Starmer was there, stayed the whole day, was immaculate and behaved in a respectful manner, so can we stop slapping at Labour just for one day, please? This thread is about a Conservative PM who has behaved with complete disrespect - he was originally not intending to attend at all and had to be persuaded by the French. Then he left to do a political interview, the time of which was decided by him, not the broadcaster, on a day when campaigning had been suspended out of respect for the D-Day veterans. I hope this sinks him and his party completely, it's appalling disrespect for people who gave their lives.

He turned. Sunak didn’t. Bloody disgusted. British my foot, it’s like a badge to him.

bombastix · 07/06/2024 09:58

Turned up. Sunak is someone who doesn’t understand why this matters. We shouldn’t have leaders like this.
