I used to work in Investment Banking. I believe Rishi started out as an Investment Banker then went into Hedge Funds. I am not at all surprised he did this. My experience with a large majority of these types is that every single move is done to advance themselves in some way. They would turn up to work charity events, show their faces, glad hand a few people and then leave - ushered out to the next, more important thing on their agenda - that advances their agenda. They really do believe their own hype - people will just be honoured they showed up at all given how important they are.

I think this will destroy him. The very demographic he is aiming at will be disgusted by this. It shows such lack of self awareness - the optics of leaving an event of this global magnitude just to further your own agenda.

I for one will be voting Lib Dem. The contrast with the Ed Davey video about caring responsibilities and Rishi making yet another show of himself is startling.

I wish it would destroy him but I fear not he will up sticks and circulate in the mansions and yatchs and private planes of the super rich of which he is one and will no doubt get even richer in the process. He will never face the mighty wrath of the man or woman in the street, but he will have finally destroyed the Tory party I would thank him for that.

You have totally lost it. English is a race - how can a person from another race be English?!?! British? Yes -English? 😆

I was born in England, as were my parents. But according to DNA I am 40% Scottish, 10% Irish and 10% Norwegian. Which means I am only 40% English. So am I not allowed to call myself English either?
Also, Rishi Sunak is a massive narcissist. He only cares about being wealthy and important.

It just adds to the impression that Sunak knows he's stuffed so just doesn't care anymore. Had there not been an election called I'm sure he'd have been there as he would have understood the importance of the PM attending. He's not helping his party, though, to win what relatively few seats they're hoping for.

Sorry, but that is incorrect. Up until a week or so ago, he had no intention of showing up at all.

HRTQueen · 07/06/2024 12:41

There has been talk this week of replacing Rishi Sunak and could it be done so soon to an election, he is going from bad to worse

It is not something I would put past the Tories I do not think it is likely but David Cameron has been swanning around all stateman like but too late for him maybe Penny Mordaunt

I would rather the Tories won more seats to keep out Reform as Labour is highly likely to win with a comfortable majority

Shortfatsuit · 07/06/2024 12:42

The racists on this thread can fuck right off. I can't stand the Tories and hell would have to freeze over before I would even consider voting for them, but Sunak is as British as any of us, and his ethnicity had fuck all to do with his poor judgement yesterday.

Absolutely agree

He was campaigning.
On a day where they'd agreed to put the election aside for commemoration services.

Yes, I think this is the main issue here. It was agreed by all parties that Wednesday and Thursday were going to be entirely about d day, no campaigning. He left the commemorations to do an interview. The photographs of the world leaders had Presidents, Presidents, Presidents...Foreign Secretary and ex PM! I don't really care that much as I wasn't going to vote for him anyway, but what a deliberate and spectacular own goal. Tory ministers must be absolutely fuming at his poor judgment when they have Farage winding them up. I don't doubt that he wanted to honour the veterans, but clearly in the back of his mind was doing this interview. It's embarrassing.

DorothyArnold · 07/06/2024 12:47

@Shortfatsuit completely agree with you. As soon as you bring someone's race or ethnicity into an argument, you have lost me. Screams ignorant bigot and I have no interest in your opinion. Criticise him on his behaviour and track record but leave his race, religion and colour out of it.

bombastix · 07/06/2024 10:03

No. It’s sod all to do with tax. It’s do with our history, our people, our struggles and our sacrifices. This guy is PM of nowhere

I had to report one of your posts today, a first for me.

"our people"

You care to define that, bud?? I thought not!!

bombastix · 07/06/2024 12:53

I don’t need to. If you have a PM who doesn’t understand that the country he leads and it’s freedoms are established based on defiance of fascism in WW2 and the D Day landings then he’s not a leader of the country. He’s a joke. He doesn’t understand something which is fundamental and beyond money. Our tragedy really. He should leave before his puddle deep thinking makes us look any more ridiculous

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 07/06/2024 12:56

The Labout leader, Michael foot was told by the media that he was disrespecting the war dead because of his unquie clothing style.

Sunak has apologized immediately, there is nothing more to add

I'm certain if Sunak was a 'white, English bloke' like Boris Johnson/Starmmer etc, the posts would have never referred to their origins.

There was one very upsetting post on this thread and for the first time ever, I had to report it.

Sunak like most politicians is a good politician as they often chat total BS

This incident by Sunak, he must have had guidance from his right-hand people - just shows priorities of politicians

Sadly, this incident has given another chance for the ugly head of the right-wing to raise its head and at times will bring out the true colours of many in real life and forums.

Bud, he made a mistake and he apologised immediately. Don't forget many politicians will never apologise or wait weeks.

Please say what you really want to say!!!

theDudesmummy · 07/06/2024 12:58

I can't imagine what his advisors were thinking. This was really, really bad. I guess they are all just in a silo at this point and cannot think about reality at all.

Has Sunak resigned?

Is that the latest breaking news?

Noseybookworm · 07/06/2024 13:00

I'm absolutely gobsmacked to be honest! So disrespectful, completely out of touch with the mood of the Country on such an important day. I can't believe his advisors would have told him to do that, is he so arrogant that he's chosen to override their advice? Totally indefensible.

His apology made him sound like a technocrat who regretted missing a teams meeting. He is most disconnected PM of this country I have ever seen. He seeks to impose national service on young people. He is an absolute grifter who has just shown his absolute lack of care for the UK in the clearest possible way: good riddance.

The most ignorant post I've read in 2024, the award is yours!!

Anyone who has some, little knowledge of WW1/2 will know that "India(n)" men and women fought alongside and or for the free world against the Germans and Japan and that is fact.

Even more men and women from India gave up their lives fighting for freedom and stood shoulder to shoulder with England and the free world, fact!!

Yep 100%

France is full of cemeteries, full of Indian - Hindu Muslim Sikh young men who gave their lives to fight our freedom.

Now Sunak is saying he doesn't want the D-Day ceremonies to become "politicised"

What an utter hypocrite, someone else who has very few positive qualities.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 07/06/2024 13:04

This is a good explanation. People who talk to you and ask you how you are while looking over your shoulder to see if someone more important has walked in for them to talk to.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 07/06/2024 13:04

He apologised after seeing the way his leaving was received. It didn’t occur to him until after he’d left and received criticism for it, that his leaving was a problem.

He didn't just spill some tea.

He should have wanted to be in France with every fibre of his being, what an honour but he just pissed over it.

"seeks to impose nationla service on young people." Utter load of rubbish
There is an option

Did you expect him to seek national service from 70/80 year olds??😂

Are you not aware of the threas imposed by Russia and China???

Go on, say what you really want to say, don't be shy

DorothyArnold · 07/06/2024 13:07

I also don't think it can be blamed on 'his advisors'. He is not a celebrity who needs PR to guide him. He is asking this country to elect him as its leader. We expect self awareness and good judgement from him, not just his advisors.

But it really does show what a cesspool politics is - that he and his team thought that this was a good idea.

Notonthestairs · 07/06/2024 13:10

National service requires our PM - whoever they are - to stand with international leaders to commemorate D-Day.

It is a privilege and honour to have the chance to be involved in those commemorations.

I expected the Prime Minister to attend.

Not to prioritise an interview with ITV - scheduled for next week.

It's tawdry however much you dress it up.

Even if it is what his advisors said to do, who appointed those advisors? Surely that person should take responisbility?
