Most politicians (of all parties) only go to these type of events because they have to be seen to be doing the right thing. I’m guessing none - or very few - of us on mumsnet went to the d-day ceremony, so it’s very hypocritical to criticise somebody who does attend but leaves a bit early.

On the contrary. As a nation we delegate such jobs to our leaders.

You are more than welcome to criticise all the people on MN who didn't go - maybe because of childcare issues, and being unable to afford the travel and knowing that we'd be held a mile behind the barrier because we aren't Rishi Sunak. However, if you wish to do so, then I invite you to a game of internet charades:

2 words.
2nd word
rhymes with "cough".

The politicians and royals represent the country. They are not there as a private people, as in general public, but in an official capacity. The general public aren’t allowed into these occasions.

If you are going to defend the Rishster, then you really, really, really can't use facts.

How about something about racism. Or the weather. Or astrology. Anything but facts which we have learned are Krytonite to Rishi.

I’m not defending him - it was disgraceful and disrespectful that he left early. I’m just saying that he wasn’t there as a private person but he was there officially to represent the country … so he should have stayed.

We should have course all gone to see Joe in small boats, although there may have been issues on the return journey.

Oh puhleese. I didn't go because I'm not the Prime Minister. It's his actual job. We pay his salary for him to represent us at this sort of thing.
If he's too small-minded and ignorant to attend occasions like this then he shouldn't be in power.

paolo2145 · 12/06/2024 19:53

Not only that in said interview he starts by saying "Sorry i am late it was incredible but just ran over". How inconvenient of the 80th anniversary of D -Day to commemorate all the brave souls who sacrificed themselves, to run wee bit over schedule. How tone deaf is Mr Sunak.

He then goes on to say he understands hardships & sacrifices as even though attended private school he went without SKY tv. He is so out of touch with ordinary voter it is unbelievable.

beguilingeyes · 13/06/2024 09:10

Also...he didn't leave 'a bit early'. He missed the whole afternoon part of the event because he thought it was a French event and heaven forbid we should associate ourselves with anything European.

Scruffily · 13/06/2024 09:17

DuncinToffee · 12/06/2024 08:44

Shapps is defending him on Sky Tv by saying "The part he didn't attend had no British veterans at all:

Just as well for us that the non-British participants didn't take the same attitude back in 1944, really.

No, they go to these type of events because it is their fucking job! To represent the British public. To work soft diplomacy with other world leaders. To use the privilege to improve the lives of our citizens.

Catch yerself on comparing regular members of the public with the PM.Hmm

I was at the beacon lighting at one of my local churches on Thursday and did not leave early.

Likewise at Ypres last November 11th, and the Belgian Prime Minister did not leave early either.
