The most ignorant post I've read in 2024, the award is yours!!

Anyone who has some, little knowledge of WW1/2 will know that "India(n)" men and women fought alongside and or for the free world against the Germans and Japan and that is fact.

Even more men and women from India gave up their lives fighting for freedom and stood shoulder to shoulder with England and the free world, fact!!

I totally agree with you. Two millions Indians fought with the Allies. Many lost their lives. The teaching of history is vital in my opinion.

This post, as well as your follow ups (e.g. “understands nothing of Britain except what it can give him”) make me strongly suspect that you would never view him as British because of his heritage. I suspect no brown person could be English enough for you.

Yes it was rude and disrespectful not to turn up, (as well as politically stupid) but your approach and comments to this suggest something far uglier.

You may have been disgusted by their conduct, but it’s clear that there is no way you’d have questioned their Britishness if a white PM had done the same.

No, that's a very silly take on a very straightforward post. Skin colour doesn't come into it at all.

'understands nothing of Britain except what it can give him' = only in it for the money. That is a Tory trait, not an ethnic one. There are plenty just like him, and they come from a range of ethnic backgrounds.

You may have been disgusted by their conduct, but it’s clear that there is no way you’d have questioned their Britishness if a white PM had done the same.

Quite simply not true. When I posted to say that I would slate any PM of any ethnic background or party affiliation who did the same thing, OP fully agreed with me. One can be legally as British as anything and yet not give a shiny shit about Britishness - this is what Sunak has done. He did it out of electoral opportunism, nothing else - and nothing to do with his ethnicity./

You're looking for racism where for once there isn't any.

He’s a prime minister. His focus should be on running the country. Not commemoration ceremonies . That’s what the royals are for.

Ridiculous comment. Of course he should have been there, as the people's representative. To pay our respects and give our thanks to the veterans.

He'd rather fuck off and lie to a journalist though.

He is more "British" than most of the nation IMO as he has paid more in taxes -

why is he not "British" he was born and educated here he has paid more thxes than many of us

I've got no issue with him being British or his skin colour, my husband is darker than him and wasn't born here but he is still British but I do object to the idea that he has somehow bought his citizenship by paying lots of taxes. That isn't how it works and it shouldn't be.

frankentall · 07/06/2024 10:45

I am surprised (I suppose I shouldn't be) and disappointed at the ignorance and racism on display in parts of thsi thread.

I'm aware of the massive contribution made by people from India and many other nations to WW2.

Although I disapprove of his views, I consider Rishi just as English as I am since we were both born here.

My criticism of his actions would be the same if it had been someone for whom I respected their politics.

Racists can fuck off.

You owe your freedom to those men/women. Your post shows your disregard for them.

The donkey jacket worn by Michael Foot that the tory tabloids got frothy about was actually a fairly expensive waterproof coat his wife had bought him to keep him warm & dry because he was recovering from illness. Incidentally Thatcher was 13 years younger than him.

But to get back on track leaders need political nous. Sunak showed us who he is. An overpromoted public school twit with no respect or compassion.

eveoha · 07/06/2024 10:48

Sunak is treading water until July 5th when he’ll be iff to Silicon Valley - He’s probably reimbursed his ‘business’/media backers by now via interest rate and COL price rises. Whoever wins the election will be handed a poisoned chalice - and has their work cut out to try to remedy the wrongs if the Conservative tenure. 👍☘️

The person I was responding to isn’t the OP. The comment I quoted was one example, and I made clear the totality of the posts were of concern.

I know what people mean when they say the things that poster says. As do many others, going by the number of thanks I have received.

Then you need to be more selective in which posts you quote, because you picked someone who clearly has absolutely zero racist motivations. There are others on this thread that you could have picked because yes, there's racism in some posts.

You have totally lost it. English is a race - how can a person from another race be English?!?! British? Yes -English? 😆

Apparently the Queen Mother complimented Foot on his jacket at the time, 43 years ago.

This was my post: I stand by it. Sunak is motivated by something I don’t understand. He is the leader of our country. He is the British PM. After this I strongly question why. If you can’t see this matters in that role, then you are crap leader. You are also not a patriot. And you are ignorant of the country you lead.

But if that's the case, wouldn't he have said no to a political interview, and used the D Day commemorations as an excuse. It would be less taxing, mentally, to attend a service, but he actively chose to go and campaign when campaigning was suspended. Surely someone who was just treading water would do more of the ceremonial stuff, and fewer interviews, not the other way round.

It was just a very bizarre decision.

English is broadly speaking a nationality. If you're born in England to parents with British citizenship, as opposed to being born in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales, you're English. So you can be English and Indian at the same time.

Your focus on race is disturbing.

He's the UK prime minister so even if personally he doesn't care, he should. Also has the words World War somehow got lost in meaning. Visit any ww1 or ww2 battlefield cemetery, and you will absolutely see that people from all over the world, India included, were very much involved.

Also ignorant comments like yours just go to show why it is so important to remember these things. Education, understanding and empathy with other perspectives is so important to learn.

OverNexus · 07/06/2024 10:59

Hi wife can't be bothered to get British Citizenship despite being applicable for it says it all really. He'll be off to the US when he loses. Good riddance.

I strongly disagree. I think her posts do indicate racism. It is the totality of her posts I was referring to.

This isn’t getting us anywhere. You are obviously welcome to disagree but I think you are wrong.

Firstly I despise Sunak and hopefully he will be roundly beaten at the GE and then resign from politics to go live in America which is what he ultimately wants….

Secondly, it was a terrible decision, and the photos of Biden, Macron & Scholz with Sunak missing which was shown around the world makes us as a nation look very poor on the world stage.

But, this is staggering ignorant on a number of levels:

  • He was born in Southampton, and educated in the UK;
  • His parents, are from Africa;
  • Only one of his grandparents is actually Indian...

Aside from that nice bit of casual racism… Indians were very involved in World War II on the side of the Allies - sending over 2,500,000 soldiers.

Have a read of this…. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-58466527

Types Of Indian Soldiers Being Inspected By Their Officer. This series of pictures were taken of the B.E.F Indian troops "somewhere in England"; many of them have just arrived back from Dunkirk under the charge of Major Wainwright and Major Jermyn, two...

World War Two: The forgotten Indian soldiers of Dunkirk

Some 300 Indian soldiers were evacuated from the coast of France during a pivotal moment in World War Two.

If she took British citizenship she'd have to pay a lot more tax, so financially it makes sense.

It will be good to see the back of them both though.

Justkeepswiimming · 07/06/2024 11:03

BishyBarnyBee · 07/06/2024 09:42

I think you're showing your own mindset here, saying he wouldn't care because he's Indian and that no-one would ever vote for him because if his ethnicity.

Neither of those explanations would ever have entered my head. People won't vote for him because of what the Tories have done to this country while they have been in power.

Absolutely agree. He's not going to loose because of his ethnicity. He's going to loose because little stunts like this show in increments how much Tories are absolutely in this for themselves. He's going to loose because of the Tories lies and negligence. Bringing his ethnicity in this will only muddy the water. He was born here, educated here, doesn't really pay tax here but you know, clearly that's by the by. He's British and he's a UK Prime minister. Of course he should be representing the country at this incredibly important anniversary.

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 07/06/2024 11:04

Well it is nearly over for him so, he is showing his true colours. Arrogant and disrespectful.
