Would this be such a bad idea? I hate labour and tories. But I don't know enough about Reform.

Imagine voting for someone like Lilley as a protest

Labour’s main growth plan to create 600,000 jobs and help fund their spending pledges from Green energy, pursuing net zero and decarbonisation is currently fantasy. Even if the wind is blowing in the right direction we still have no viable means of storing enough of the energy for it to be secure ,reliable and affordable. Paul Nowak in the video cites Biden increasing public spending to create more jobs but the numbers have been very small compared to the amount of money spent. Also the US economy’s growth has been due to the fact they have invested in technology which have secured their own energy sources in oil and gas extraction. This has been a priority for the US ever since 9/11 to be self sufficient in energy.

Renewable energy sources are no answer at all until intermittency has been solved. It hasn't yet - and the solution may be a long time coming (because people have been looking for energy efficient storage at scale for a long time now - and not finding it).
Even nuclear reactors are not a perfect answer because of the expense of construction and the time lag between conception and function - but also because they cannot simply be turned on and off (up and down a bit, yes, drastically, no). So it is likely still to be down to fossil fuels to cover large spikes in energy usage.

No one has grasped the nettle of net zero - which implies a massive upgrade both in generation and in the grid to support it (which is simply not up to it currently). It isn't just productivity that is at stake - it's keeping the lights on as interminable net zero policies put more and more pressure on the grid.
I don't think that any policy maker has a grip on this at all. Because, if they had, they'd be panicking.

We need to continue to develop green technology and energy sources but not rush it in before it’s secure, reliable and affordable. We should phase it in alongside current oil and gas if we don’t want to shoot ourselves in the foot. I recently had to spend £20,000 to replace my perfectly good diesel car because it was not ULEZ compliant. This has wiped out all of my savings but with unsocial hours shift work, children who do sporting activities and elderly infirm parents to ferry around to hospital appointment etc there really wasn’t much choice. One thing all governments need are more scientists as MPs, advisors and SPADS because the current lack of understanding of basic science in energy creation and storage and also medicine during the Covid era is just plain embarrassing and leads to policies is at best Expensive and unworkable and at worst dangerous and harmful.

Yes good post. The cost of converting is massive

To individuals paying and the taxpayer

Absolutely this. Ignore condescending comments from other posters who think they know what's best for us. Let's democracy decide what public wants“

It will on 4th when a Labour government will be returned. A vote for Reform is basically a wasted vote. If Farage wins Clacton, god help any constituents who actually need their MP to work for them.

What happens when these new 10 million people get old. How many more people will we need to import to take care of

The majority of immigrants have had children over past decades. There’s no reason to think the current wave won’t do the same. They’ll be born here and be British. That’s what the UK needs, children and young people.

MollyJustMight · 27/06/2024 21:16

You really believe all that?

Really?

KarenOH · 28/06/2024 12:32

DuncinToffee · 27/06/2024 19:28

The depressing thing is the majority of their supporters believe this. It’s just emboldening their disgusting views.

Does the population just keep expanding to look after the elderly as they grow old?

The birth rate is dropping like a stone. We need more people.

EasternStandard · 28/06/2024 13:02

Is that a yes to growing the population or not?

Do people want it to keep going up indefinitely?

We need it to be at replacement level. Over the next couple of decades deaths are going to exceed births by a big margin unless the birth rate goes up.

Sorry but I actually am thinking this is fake.

The guy isn’t a candidate, he turned up out of nowhere and started canvassing. Political parties can’t stop random people canvassing.

The guy was trying to hard to make these comments . Why would anyone wanting a political party to win be stupid enough to make these comments inform of channel 4 news ?

Farage has just said he’s an actor and you can check out his website. A rough actor I think he said.

Im sorry but I don’t believe this guy is real.

He is an actor by profession, actors can be racists too

True but I personally am not convinced.

Why would anyone be stupid enough to make those comments infront of the media?

Even if it’s real, you can’t stop anyone from canvassing.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a plant.

DuncinToffee · 28/06/2024 14:10

From the Telegraph article

Mr Parker apologised for the comments today, saying he was “goaded on”.
He also confirmed he was an actor but got involved with Reform UK after contacting the party himself and volunteering to do leafleting because he believes in its message. He said he had not told the party that he was an actor.
Mr Parker said: “Of course I regret what I said. Christ, I’m not a racist. I’ve had Muslim girlfriends. It was typical chaps-down-the-pub talk.”
Asked whether he would like to apologise, he said: “Of course I’m sorry. They were off-the-cuff things that everyone says.”
He said he had “a lot of Pakistani friends” and “Muslim friends”, and that he was “sick to death” of being asked about the footage.

What about the other dude? The one who said under reform we would have paramilitaries, not police, and Reform will bring back the noose? He seemed strangely excited by the idea of violence to keep law and order

You don’t believe reform voters generally have those views? Take a look on any comment section about immigration. Any news thread about a non white British person.

Wow. To have such self belief and faith in my own superiority, that'd be something.

I know someone with this level of self belief and righteousness. You just cannot expect a conversation. It is all about making points.

Another Reform candidate you can vote for

https://x.com/theipaper/status/1806691114335797570

A Reform UK candidate has said women cannot “behave in the same way” as men

James Gunn, who is standing for Reform in Oxford West and Abingdon, has said “girls should be aware promiscuity is not attractive”

Looks (from this thread) like a good deal of people are voting for Reform! I know a number of people in real life who are going to vote for Reform also. Some of them are people who were going to vote for Labour. I am really on the fence right now. It's so hard to know who to go for. Was going to be Labour, but I'm not so sure now. At the rate things are going, there will be a hung parliament/coalition.

I haven't seen the leaders debate from tonight yet - I have recorded it and will watch tomorrow. But the leaders debate from some years ago, made me really like Nick Clegg, and I voted LibDems, and look what happened there. Shit all over the young by tripling tuition fees for uni, instead of getting rid of them like he promised.

I don't trust any of them tbh.

But can you trust Farage given his track record? Obviously Kier Starmer does not have a magic wand to solve every problem. It'd hard to debate when expectations are to fix everything but not touch taxes.
