General election 2024

Will Labour pay Jnr doctors the ridculous 35% they are demanding?

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 29/05/2024 12:24

This is unaffordable and that is a fact
So what promises are the Labour lot making, that is if they have the time to discuss this other than what 's happening to Dainae Abbott

If us the taxpayers could afford the 35%, then I'd be happy to sanction the rise but we can't afford that

FIVE days of strike - this will have another massive impact on those waiting for appointments and those having them cancelled. The doctors knew what the pay and conditions were when they decided to take the job and the strikes should be outlawed. The police can't strike, the armed forces can't strike, so why are doctors allowed to strike??

The BMA estimate a 35% pay rise would cost about £1 billion. If we get back the £200million Michelle Mone was given for providing dodgy PPE, that would be a fair start.

I’m sure there would be other avenues that could be explored to find some more.

They've just announced they are going to crack down on tax avoidance.

Why they haven't before is beyond me (well it's not because they have been the ones avoiding it!)

But don't worry, if we cant give our junior doctors a decent pay in this country Australia, NZ et al are queuing up to take them off our hands

No, they aren't. I did a bricklaying course and a chap on it was doing so as it would give him more points for Australia than his wife got as a doctor.

Btw - if anyone wants to aim a question at me, make it clear rather than just post in a confusing manner

I have seen several of your posts on a similar subject of "will Labour do x".

My question to you (based on the fact that the answer to all of your questions is "probably not in the way you hope they will, but they will probably be better than the current shower who couldn't really do worse for the country") is:-

What are you hoping to achieve with all your posts please?

I haven't worked out whether you are a hopeful Labour voter trying to work out whether they have a plan (no evidence of one so far), or whether you are trying to dissuade people from voting for them somehow (Unlikely without any specific point)?

I don't mean to sound provocative, I am just bemused.

If us the taxpayers could afford the 35%, then I'd be happy to sanction the rise but we can't afford that

Nonsense

If we can't afford to pay highly specialised people to provide a highly specialised service, then we can't afford the service itself.

"taxpayers" absolutely can afford to pay Junior Doctors, the issue is government would rather waste money on utter shite like HS2, Aircraft Carriers, Nuclear Subs, slapping union flags and red, white, and blue paint on anything and everything, than admit that people in "vocations" have been taken the piss out of for eons, and if you start paying one a reasonable salary, you'd have to pay all the rest.

We need a serious rethink in the UK about what we actually care about, and whether we are willing to pay for what we take for granted or not. Drs, Nurses, Teachers, whoever, are not being difficult, the difficulty lies with a UK public that has grown entitled and selfish, wants the moon on a stick, but bleats, moans, and whines about the real cost and ultimately would rather see their bank balance bloat a little bit than pay for the basic services they demand.

So in short, yes I fucking hope Labour does give the Dr's the perfectly reasonable 35% they are asking for.

Well said 👏👏👏👏

Well according to BMA @HappiestSleeping Australia took almost 2000 UK doctors last year, up 67% on year before. So they must take a lot of UK bricklayers

Maddy70 · 29/05/2024 14:43

Its fully costed by getting the tax from sources not currently paying correctly .... we have a massive shortage of doctors. They need to be attracted into the nhs not private practice

This has been deleted by MNHQ for breaking our Talk Guidelines.

The health secretary said it woukd cost 2 billion (which was 1 billion more that the doctors organisation said) rishi said that they would put 2.5billion to national service.

So I feel it is true.

I also think its pointless training doctors to send elswhere

Medstudent12 · 29/05/2024 14:48

It’s not a pay rise, it’s to correct what our pay should have been had our pay kept up with inflation. Statistically doctors have had a far bigger drop in their pay than other public sector workers. We’re asking for more because we’ve had a bigger drop.

Our working conditions are appalling and we spend thoussands on indemnity fees, compulsory registration and post graduate exams. We can all leave for Australia if you like, we’re hard working progressionals not your slaves.

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/05/2024 14:50

The 2.5billion the Tories are threatening to waste on National Service will cover it with plenty of change left over.

Toddle off back to the royal family board and keep sending Kate your good wishes from there. You're out here with the grown ups and it isn't a good look.

The money is there. They’d rather spend it on other ( shite) things, including perks and pay rises for themselves.

“ Taxpayer” is a term used to encourage the little people to keep bickering amongst themselves while they get away with pilfering millions, unchecked.

TheCookieCrumblesThisWay · 29/05/2024 14:56

OP if the Tories have the perfect solution for all these problems, how come they haven’t implemented any of these improvements in all the time they’ve been in power? How come the UK is losing large numbers of doctors to other countries? How would another Tory government change that except by introducing further privatization?

Undethetree · 29/05/2024 15:02

Fucking doctors, can't we just rope in some volunteers instead? There must be loads of people willing to have a go at a bit of heart surgery on a Tuesday night. Then all the actual doctors can move abroad which would also solve the problem of over population....so bloody simple really.

And they'd balls that up just like they fucked up with Water and the railways. Incompetent fuckwits.🙄

I think they take a lot of tradespeople in general (and a lot of doctors). I wouldn't be surprised if they are struggling to recruit in the same way we are.

I don't think @DistinguishedSocialCommentator is suggesting the Conservatives are the right way to vote. I've read a number of threads that have been started, and am of the opinion that the OP is wondering where else to cast the vote. Labour, or spoiled paper.

CormorantStrikesBack · 29/05/2024 12:33

Well if we can’t afford it then I guess we can’t afford doctors. Which is why there is currently a year plus waiting time for urgent cardiac surgery and 18months plus for gynae waiting times. Choose your priorities I guess. 🤷‍♀️

In other news we can afford to lose £60million to Bulgaria in some sort of social security racket to people who don’t even live here.

Not to mention the Liz Truss debacle.

Doctors have already had their career structure trashed, with the new workforce plan.

They have 5-6 years of student loans to pay back.

They work 55 hour weeks as a standard, with no overtime paid.

For people who aren't aware, the plan 2 medical students who graduated a year ago, are on a much worse deal than other doctors, anyway. Agreed in the 2016 strike.

Morale is on the floor. Absolutely on the floor.

There needs to be a deal, and whoever is in charge of negotiations should stop messing about-of either political flavour.

And as for flooding the hospitals and practices with Associate Physicians, don't get me started. Second class service for "the great unwashed", as the government no doubt sees it.

Plenty of money for arms, though!

I am more bemused that you actually think junior doctors are worth what they are being paid.

What a nasty thing to say, and utter bollocks. I hope you go private-you deserve it.

Iworkformeanies · 29/05/2024 15:18

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator
Have you read the placards they're holding?
£15/hour. They're asking for just over £20/hour.
You can get £13.50/hour on the checkout at Aldi without training for 7 years.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 29/05/2024 15:21

Oh and don't forget that doctors pay for all of their exams once they are in training, plus GMC fees. AND they do the work in their own time.
They can be moved anywhere round a region, and are.

Their lives are unutterably hard, and they need to be rewarded for it. Or you'll lose the lot.

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2024 15:25

Drs are also training abroad on a better deal.

I know quite a number of students who can get EU passport due to one parent. Fluent in English and their parents mother tongue.

They will go abroad to study. They may come back in many years to come when they can get paid a better wage. They may not.

This is why we need to get people back into work, ie those that can work but wont as its easier on benefits - not the genuine majority on benefits

Benefits need to be reviewed and no gov of any colour can afford reselatically afford the benefits, NHS bills, not the defence bills

Well getting people their operations and outpatient appointments would help get them back to work wouldn't it ?
