Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

No of course not and tbh this is often mentioned as a but…..
Of course
Many lower earners help run this country and we couldn't cope without them.
I’m thinking home carers for example. Without them their relatives quality of life would be severely diminished but their carers wage is a pittance.
Thats just one example.

Im fully aware a country runs on more than money.
But that doesn’t mean that our country can survive on less.

There's nothing special about people who contribute more tax than others. The only reason they are able to earn money in the first place is by being part of a wider society. If anything, earning and contributing more is a privilege denied to the majority of people.

Excuse me, people working in public services, education, utilities and NHS have done this.
Finance, IT and tech have nothing to do with it.

The water utilities in this country are largely owned by international finance companies.

Yorkshire Water, for instance, is over half owned by Hong Kong investment firms and over a third owned by the Singapore government. The remainder is owned by an Australian pension scheme.

WomanMumLoverDaughterStepmumFriend · 24/05/2024 23:17

None that I would miss

Dibbydoos · 24/05/2024 23:17

OMG how brainwashed are your relatives and friends @groyard

If they want to know what each party has achieved, look at the stats. Here's one about nhs waiting lists...

I'm looking forward to less fraud, improved nhs services, improved schools and councils that are properly funded!

Dibbydoos · 24/05/2024 23:18

If your relatives and friends leave the UK, we'll a few less brainwashed tories would be a godsend.

AngryHedgehog · 24/05/2024 23:21

wutheringkites · 24/05/2024 13:05

What is it that they think they will benefit from in Spain compared to the UK with a Labour govt?

Cost of living surely?

AngryHedgehog · 24/05/2024 23:22

And Tories are generally wankers but by god do Labour supporters love a whinge!

SheerLucks · 24/05/2024 23:23

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/05/2024 12:39

Can you imagine being that much of a whiny, money obsessed bitch that you would uproot your entire life at the prospect of paying a bit more tax?

If I have to pay VAT on replacing my bathroom, you can sure as hell pay it on private education.

Edited

This!!

WalrusOfLove · 24/05/2024 23:31

Something like 3/4 of private schools have said they'll reduce their work with state schools if VAT is implemented, so it won't just impact the wealthy.

They are hardly uber elites. BIL’s parents were immigrant shopkeepers.

Is your BiL Rishi Sunak?😆

@DodoTired
Presumably @BitOutOfPractice means that people who say they will leave the UK to avoid any extra/higher taxation, but will "keep a little flat here", would be actively contrbuting to the housing crisis by owning a flat in the UK which would be empty most of the time? 🤷‍♀️

Why would it be empty? It would be rented out!

DodoTired · 24/05/2024 23:47

BlueJamSandwich · 24/05/2024 22:42

That's never happened anywhere though has it, not on an International level? We've seen it here Nationally, where high earners left cities to live in the countryside post covid, but we've never seen a mass exodus abroad because of taxation.

As for "paying in more than they take out", the income of the top 1% is greater than the bottom 55%, they should pay more tax.

We're also a currency issuing country, so spending on resources to the economy and education, healthcare and infrastructure don't really need to be funded by revenue. E.g. every £1 spent on education is estimated to result in a £3 boost the the economy.

The brain drain has never happened anywhere?? Are you serious?

hotpotlover · 25/05/2024 00:00

They will do nothing. It's empty talk.

pinkzebra02 · 25/05/2024 00:07

People claiming they'll leave the country as if anyone would miss them be like:

Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?
swimsong · 25/05/2024 00:23

DodoTired · 24/05/2024 23:40

but they dont RUN it.

No, the 'high-earners' in this country that people keep praising are running it. You know, the greedy and incompetent polluters.

Let us not forget the impact of the pandemic

It’s also worth noting that we cannot compare figures so easily as the way they are categorised has changed since 1990.
This article indicates the changes and explains things more fully than a chart that pays no reference to them.
The spike, obviously, is Covid.
Its also worth noting what was occurring during some of these dates. An influx of younger people from Europe and older people leaving the UK for Spain, for example, means a healthier population, for a while.

Austerity had its affects as well.

Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

This is untrue. Look at African countries, Russia, some parrs of the Mediterranean, sone parts of Asia especially Thailand, Poland etc where many millions over the last few decades decided they could have a better life elsewhere.

The problem with your thinking is you wrongly imagine that it will never happen to Britain. That we are different - can’t possibly fail - and this is spectacularly inaccurate and history tells us we did fail under Labour before. In 1976, we didn’t have basic services such as electricity and non collections. People just stopped working, aa everywhere ground to a halt. Britain had to take a begging bowl to the IMF for a bail out. And it absolutely can and may well happen again under Labour.

People have very short memories.
The economy is not some dirty word and an optional extra that we can be indifferent about, it’s the very oxygen that keeps us alive, literally keeping life support machines on, and the lights on.

IF people vote for Labour they are playing Russian roulette with our future. That is not ‘hyperbole’ but fact. As history repeats itself people have no idea how bad it could be. There is no time at all where Labour have been competent with our National money - not a single example of fiscal competence. So your choice, but at least own whar you are doing to our country!

ImWearingPantaloons · 25/05/2024 06:13

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/05/2024 12:34

Also what exactly is it about the current bin fire that your brother and brother in law think is preferable to paying a little bit more tax on their presumably massive earnings?

My question exactly

spriots · 25/05/2024 06:22

IF people vote for Labour they are playing Russian roulette with our future.

Whereas the Tories - for example Liz Truss - have been so extraordinarily competent?!

Compared to Labour, absolutely.

How is that a bright and articulate reply? Labours track record of crashing the economy every time they were voted in is there for all to see. Are you saying those historic failures didn’t happen?
