Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

1000 replies

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

No. But I think my daughter & husband will move abroad if the Tories win. They are both in professions that are in demand in Australia, New Zealand & Canada. They won't put up with another 5 years of Tory shit and wouldn't blame them - even though I'd be heartbroken to see them go.

NoSnowdrop · 24/05/2024 20:36

None of the remainers I know who vehemently posted on their social media about leaving the UK after the majority voted to get us out of the corrupt EU did so. They’re all still here having a good old moan about how shit this country is.

so no, I doubt anyone who threatens to leave will do.

We are already losing plenty of skilled people to these countries.

If we retain more teachers, nurses and doctors in the first 15 years of their careers and lose a couple of people that work in finance I’ll not cry about it.

you are already losing people and will lose more.

also, its very dumb attitude towards people working in tech and finance. You only need to look at the numbers of who exactly provides majority of fiscal revenue from individual taxpayers, and it is a small number of people. Losing them makes the country poorer, and this dismissive attitude is sure doesn’t encourage them to stay.
imagine paying half of your earnings to prop up the rest of the society and being constantly berated at the same time

Itwasabrightcoldayinapril · 24/05/2024 13:29

Excellent. And who will pay all the taxes to fund all the things that you need?

Edited

The people who are hired or promoted to replace them.

It’s really not a good idea, agree

Net providers means financially

ie. They put more into the state financially than they take out.

Oh, right. So they just sit there entrepreneuring and their wallets mysteriously fill with cash without anyone else being involved. Got it.

We're losing the financial services industry because of Brexit which, may I remind you, was only a thing because of Tory party in-fighting.

What are you after? People to stop creating businesses?

God some people on this site are nuts.

If you'd prefer to live in a glorified shopping mall of a country where the sports facilities are built by slaves and women are being tortured in prison for wanting to drive, just so you can hold on to slightly more of your massively salary, go for it.

I'm personally looking forward to the slight glimmer of a possibility that my infant son might now grow up in a Britain where, if you ring for an ambulance, one might actually turn up.

It's Friday, have a glass of wine and chill out.

As oppossed to the filthy shithole this country has become. Rubbish blowing down the streets, potholes everywhere, can't see a dr or a dentist, obese people everywhere stuffing their face and kids stabbing and robbing each other. Yes I def want to stay here and watch my tax burden going up and up.

Livelovebehappy · 24/05/2024 20:45

What a mess the UK would be in if that happened. After all, Labour rely on the taxing of the rich to implement their plans to help the feckless. Who could they screw money out of then?

HowardTJMoon · 24/05/2024 20:45

EasternStandard · 24/05/2024 20:42

There's always going to be someone new who wants to start a business and get other people to do the work for them. That these people get rich then inevitably fuck off to another country where there are bigger tax breaks is nothing new.

I live in a beautiful village without a scrap of litter anywhere. I did actually secure a same day appointment with my GP 2 weeks ago and my dentist is awesome. Where the hell do you live? It sounds awful.

OMGitsnotgood · 24/05/2024 20:46

If the Tories win I'll definitely be considering my future in this country.

DodoTired · 24/05/2024 20:46

Justbetweenus · 24/05/2024 20:37

The people who are hired or promoted to replace them.

One. There is shortage of skilled people. A lot of them were immigrants to begin with and hence they can easily go elsewhere.

Two. London was incredibly attractive place for young talent in several industries, which made it easier to recruit and in turn encouraged companies to open or expand their offices here; it all went downhill since 2016 and if it is difficult to attract talent in London this will in turn make it unattractive for companies to start businesses here.

by the way as much as I respect doctors, hospital consultants NHS is the one who spends taxpayers money (even if they give half back in taxes). Same with teachers etc

you need other viable businesses to keep the economy going, not NHS or teachers being main employer

I agree, it isn’t Labour’s doing.

but not sure they can reverse the trend, or will they make it even worse and accelerate the brain drain. I will not vote for Tories; I an merely objecting to stupid sneering here “we don’t need them (ie high earners)! They may go!”
Yeah right

LLMn · 24/05/2024 20:50

Kandalama · 24/05/2024 20:29

Let’s not forget business owners and entrepreneurs

Dual nationals and those with money can go just about anywhere

They make up the very small 30% of the population that are net providers
Its not just a brain drain that we should be worried about. If that 30% reduces any further, who pays for everything.

You are actually absolutely right. And, of course, hospital consultants are not wealth creators, they leech off the public system, paid out of taxes. If real wealth creators leave, we are stuffed.

What, the tax burden caused by pretty much every big business going to huge lengths to avoid paying tax in the UK and, instead, registering in tax havens? You'd have to be hopelessly naïve to think we're not already picking up that tax burden.

oh go on then. Start a business and create some jobs and tax revenues please if it is that easy

VAT on public uni fees is really not on the table! Almost all UK universities are public

The Government considers Universities to be private if you look at Govn publications on this.
Universities status is considered by academics to be somewhere in between public and private.

Yes no one pays tax. You will only have to pick up £2.25 when they leave.

It’s been a while since this kind of economic sense was around, even Blair avoided it

And this

MangosteenSoda · 24/05/2024 20:58

So, as per your OP, the UK is in danger of (many/all?) comfortable earners emigrating? If there is a Labour government?

Cos it’s so awesome right now and there should never be a change of government ever?! Um, no.

I pay tax. Which is more than a lot of big businesses do.
