Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

Is this a joke? Have you been sleeping for the past decade or so?

I agree with that the way he was treated was disgusting. I consider myself a socialist and he made me hopeful. Not that I expect Britain to be a socialist country, but that a potential Prime Minister could be making policies based upon caring for others. I was devastated when Johnson got in, a man who thinks burning money in front of people sleeping on the street is an amusing game. And something he clearly never grew out of when I watched a video at the time of him pretending a homeless gentleman simply wasn’t there when he walked past and the man tried to engage him.

That election ruined my political beliefs and I’ve never felt more apathetic than I did then. I hoped that Corbyn might have some lasting influence, and that him potentially becoming part of forefront politics might challenge some of the dirtier sides of politics again. But I guess you’re right, why would you do that to yourself.

I love living in Britain but sometimes I am deeply ashamed of it.

I think we probably would agree on many things.

I was doing my A Levels when Corbyn was elected leader and we all bunked off to see him speak in a local park. It was so nice to finally feel the broad church of the Labour Party had a place for people like me. I really felt so hopeful of a kinder society and remain quite scarred from being a teenager in a racist, homophobic, xenophobic etc northern england.

I can’t stand keir starmer but working people are being harmed under the current government and I am voting for the party which is closer to my views and which in this system is likely to get in.

If I didn’t live in Scotland, I would be one of the many NHS professionals who emigrated but I’ve found a corner of the UK where I’ve found community spirit and a kindness that I actually didn’t know existed. By no means perfect but so different to my hometown.

LLMn · 24/05/2024 19:56

Like where will they go? People earning 300K pa? Where? The only ones earning this much I know are hospital consultants. Nobody in Europe or USA will employ native British consultants - no language skills and inferior medical skills. Indian, Polish, consultants won't leave either - even if they will be taxed at 70%, they will still have 2000% more left after tax than what their colleagues are making in India and Poland. Arab consultants (some of the best surgeons we have) might leave though for a more reasonable taxation climate in the Middle East. The rest will stay.

If by brain you mean 'people who are comparatively massively overpaid for what is a mediocre skillet' then I say let the plug be pulled

When I was a teenager I was hugely political, I really truly believed that all the rallies and protests and anger would lead to something. I think that’s why I got excited when Corbyn was the leader, I thought maybe all those years of ‘fighting’ were finally coming home to roost.

But instead we got years of Tory hell.

I’m glad you’ve found your corner of the world that makes you happy. I haven’t quite found mine yet, but the fight has long gone, so I hope to find peace yet.

The original brain drain was academics leaving for Europe and the US. The new people threatening to leave aren’t particularly brains or skills but mid and upper level business people who can easily be replaced by current and rising subordinates. To the extent that people of value (teachers, medical professionals, academics) were having a hard time they were having a hard time because of Toey politics but no one cared to notice.

sadly I don’t think anyone has noticed that their lives will be no better under Labour because for once we have a Labour leader who is saying that he won’t spend mo why that he doesn't have. If he’s true to his word nothing can or will change.

I think we'll be OK. I don't think we have a shortage of young, ambitious graduates willing to trade their souls for money. The old ones might leave- but wealthy retirees taking their pensions and going somewhere sunny for a few years is hardly a recent invention.

So naive. Young ones can leave just the same

Australia, New Zealand, Canada…

Hospital consultants aren’t the only ones making good money. People in finance, IT and tech have lots of options (Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Dubai, Singapore, US etc)

I hope you find your peace and I hope one day we get a society that isn’t built on cruelty, individualism and greed.

We are already losing plenty of skilled people to these countries.

If we retain more teachers, nurses and doctors in the first 15 years of their careers and lose a couple of people that work in finance I’ll not cry about it.

That is a dark and godless place.

The FS is strong though in terms of paying the tax burden so other people would have to step up with tax if that decreased

Arlanymor · 24/05/2024 20:17

There’s not a general election or referendum that goes by without people saying this. Rarely do they mean it. I did move abroad for four years after Brexit but it wasn’t genuinely by design. We’re not about to have a mass exodus.

Summertimer · 24/05/2024 20:22

I think most people are embarrassed by our current govt and Tories in general. If Labour had been stronger they’d have voted the Tories out ages ago.

blackpear · 24/05/2024 20:28

God, the opposite. I know a lot of people desperate to escape the Tories, but whose loss of fom has made it more difficult to leave.

TheMoth · 24/05/2024 20:29

Is it only tories who have all the Really Important Jobs and are so well paid that we'll miss their tax contributions then?

Would I have been in a better paid job if I'd been a tory supporter as a young person?

Let’s not forget business owners and entrepreneurs

Dual nationals and those with money can go just about anywhere

They make up the very small 30% of the population that are net providers
Its not just a brain drain that we should be worried about. If that 30% reduces any further, who pays for everything.

TeamPolin · 24/05/2024 20:30

Five of my colleagues left the U.K. after Brexit. All highly educated, professional people who paid far more into the system than they ever took from it.

If you're worried about the brain drain, start with the Tories....

Combattingthemoaners · 24/05/2024 20:30

What is with all of these catastrophic posts regarding a Labour win?? Have you been living under a rock during the shit show of our government for the last 14 years!?

HolyGrapefruit · 24/05/2024 20:32

sprigatito · 24/05/2024 12:35

I would be very surprised if the collective brainpower of those who want this Tory government to continue amounted to anything approaching a "brain drain".

😂😂😂😂😂
that's spot on!

The business owners are the "net producers"? Not their employees who are actually doing the work? Weird. Most business owners I know spend all their time either in meetings or looking at spreadsheets and not actually producing anything.

Net providers means financially

ie. They put more into the state financially than they take out.

llamadrama16 · 24/05/2024 12:28

No, no one. We know a lot of people who are in the top 1% of earners, a good majority who also hold a second passport, and none of them are saying they will leave.

Yup. This is kind of hilarious. The brain drain is being caused by Brexit and the shit-show these clowns are making of multiple things including public services, the economy and the R&D sector.

A good proportion of our friends are moderate to high earners with university degrees from Russell Group / Oxbridge, I don’t know anyone in these categories who isn’t desperate to see the end of this omnishambles.
