Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

1000 replies

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

Oh
I forgot
Rudeness as well is another good reason

What hell do they think Labour are going to unleash on them? Whatever happens it won't be anything like the constant struggle that people on lower or fixes income have had to go through during the past 14 years, people who will never have the money to leave for far flung shores and now thanks to Tory Brexit no longer have freedom of movement. I would also put money on them not going, they are being a bit over dramatic Whoever wins they will be fine as you say they have skills that are in demand

Hdkatznahtw125sgh · 24/05/2024 19:19

It’s interesting to read that the current Labour Party is considered by some to be seriously left wing.

I joined under Corbyn so am to the far left of the party (or I was I left in 2021) I will vote Labour (or vote SNP tactically) to get rid of the tories but they really are very centrist? Maybe centre left at a push. A couple of good ideas fair enough but nothing particularly radical.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 24/05/2024 19:20

I do hope so, but no idea where they'd go as most of the Tories I know are xenophobic, racist Brexit supporters.

HowDoTheyManageAtAll · 24/05/2024 19:21

No, I don't, but wish we could. The Tories, Labour, all of them - not a decent lot between them all

ToWhitToWhoo · 24/05/2024 19:21

No. I do know people who emigrated because of Brexit.

lemonmeringueno3 · 24/05/2024 19:22

I don't anyone who is settled here and will leave.

But I do know people who bring staff in from abroad to fulfil senior or specialist roles but think that punitive taxation will make that harder.

I hate the tories btw. But don't think it's hyperbole and it will have an impact on growth over time if they are seen to be raising taxes significantly.

Are you an Corbynist? I wonder, with his announcement to stand today as an independent, whether you think he might end up somehow playing a bigger role in U.K. politics again? I believe he will win as an indy and wonder if he will somehow end up back in the forefront of politics again?

Ah yes, the UK is world-renowned for its rudeness, unlike all other countries.

Ghosttofu99 · 24/05/2024 19:24

No, I don’t know anyone who is bats**t but I am starting to wonder if a Russian bot farm is behind the sudden spike in crazy ‘if Labour wins…’ threads.

filka · 24/05/2024 19:25

Back in 1997 I half-joked that if Labour won, I would emigrate. They did win, and I did get a job abroad a few months later. And I'm still abroad so I guess I did emigrate.

InterIgnis · 24/05/2024 16:24

The problem isn’t merely that they’re leaving, it’s that they’re not being replaced. The UK, whichever government it has, needs to attract wealth rather than chase it away. Like it or not, the UK economy is capitalist, and bankers and stockbrokers are needed whether you personally like them or not.

I think we'll be OK. I don't think we have a shortage of young, ambitious graduates willing to trade their souls for money. The old ones might leave- but wealthy retirees taking their pensions and going somewhere sunny for a few years is hardly a recent invention.

SapphireSeptember · 24/05/2024 19:31

No, because no one I know has any money. 🙄

localnotail · 24/05/2024 19:33

I would be very pleased if they do go. More job openings for me! Better salary! More houses to choose from! )))

Corbyn is, and always has been, a democratic socialist. He's not "far left" his policies were no more left than the governments of parts of Europe.

fatimashortbread · 24/05/2024 19:35

Yes - Rishi Sunak

ExasperatedManager · 24/05/2024 19:37

I wouldn't worry about it too much, OP. The types of people who say that they'll leave when the Tories get kicked out are not the types of people we want to keep in any case.

ItsFuckingBoringFeedingEveryoneUntilYouDie · 24/05/2024 19:42

'Luckily' the Tories and brexiteers made emigration a while lot harder for most of us, so no, we won't be emigrating. Wish we had left in 2016, but H wouldn't leave his mum and now the kids are in critical school years, so here we will be stuck for the foreseeable.

And I say that as someone who is actually glad we are looking at the rats deserting the ship they have sunk

Yes and no. My politics is very similar to his.

I’m not sure if he will get re elected as an independent but am hopeful he does. I don’t think he will end up at the forefront of politics again, he is an excellent grass roots MP and think he won’t compromise doing what he loves again. The way he was treated was disgusting.

However, there are a younger generation of left wing MPs in the Labour Party who I am hopeful for in the future. Ultimately I wish for a more proportional system in the UK, and if that existed a true socialist Labour Party.

Hi,

I think it’s the way I’ve written it. Apologies.

I am to the left of Corbyn, I do not consider Corbyn far left. I joined under Corbyn because I felt it was a time when views more similar to mine were finally represented in a mainstream party.

Just realised I’ve contradicted myself. My politics is most similar to Corbyns and I like a lot of his politics but I am predominantly to the left of his views / policies.

Yes.
Me and my husband.

I agree with that the way he was treated was disgusting. I consider myself a socialist and he made me hopeful. Not that I expect Britain to be a socialist country, but that a potential Prime Minister could be making policies based upon caring for others. I was devastated when Johnson got in, a man who thinks burning money in front of people sleeping on the street is an amusing game. And something he clearly never grew out of when I watched a video at the time of him pretending a homeless gentleman simply wasn’t there when he walked past and the man tried to engage him.

That election ruined my political beliefs and I’ve never felt more apathetic than I did then. I hoped that Corbyn might have some lasting influence, and that him potentially becoming part of forefront politics might challenge some of the dirtier sides of politics again. But I guess you’re right, why would you do that to yourself.

I love living in Britain but sometimes I am deeply ashamed of it.

LyndaLaHughes · 24/05/2024 19:50

Tory voters leaving the country? Oh I hope so. Might stand a hope of keeping them out forever. But they might struggle to do so given how Brexit has screwed freedom of movement.
