Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

1000 replies

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

I'm not denying salaries are higher and house prices are often cheaper depending on where you are. BIL and his wife are multi-millionaires. But I still don't think the quality of life is as good. And personally not a fan of lots of aspects of the culture. They have this massive house on a sprawling complex of massive houses and there's just nothing. Not even a corner shop. You have to drive everywhere. Just seems kind of soulless to me.

However the flip side - we have very uncompetitive salaries here and HUGE rates of marginal tax. People with global skills in certain sectors are very, very hard to keep. It is a huge problem.

It is all bollocks. Like you say, maybe a few will go but ultimately, this is a relatively secure country compared to other parts of the world, relatively stable democracy, relatively sheltered from the worst vestiges of climate change and a country with beautiful countryside. People will try and dress it up that "all their friends are leaving" but even if true, it's anecdotal evidence and nothing more.

Keir Starmer has turned Labour into a safe option for wavering voters and whilst it is a shame to see some of the more progressive policies dropped, it's a price worth paying for the change that this country desperately needs.

Absolutely. I think a lot of people cannot see that money isn’t always a motivator either. I briefly lived in another country and hated every second of it even though we were financially better off, so I came home and dragged DH with me. I like the U.K. and I truly hope that things do change. Life will never be perfect, some things will always be hard, but the last decade has been horrific and if Labour can ease even some of that, I’ll be a happy person!

Absolutely, our salaries are shite. I can see why people would emigrate to Canada, maybe Australia. US in its current state doesn't appeal at all. And my husband could earn four times his salary there if we moved, but we won't.

Donnydave75 · 24/05/2024 18:29

Not much of a brain drain if they voted for this present shower, but I can understand it because the present Labour are just as Tory minded.

sugarapplelane · 24/05/2024 18:33

Op - both your Brother and BIL are being sensational and over reacting.

I wish people would stop saying things like this.

I hate the Tories with a passion and think they are a big part of the mess this country currently is in. They may blame it on the previous Labour government, but come on - they have been in power for a good few years now and haven’t really got us out of a mess.

Bit have I left the country because they are in power - no

Well same here. We are in the top 1% and could quadruple easy. We are here because I wanted to raise the children here. However I can see the huge issues the taxation system and poor pay in skilled jobs is causing. We aren’t competitive globally. People are leaving. Especially the emerging talent. The Tories have ruined the economy. I’m worried Labour will make it worse with populist policies which will target those who have done well in their careers. It will make it impossible to recruit talent and it’s bad enough now.

Kikibee · 24/05/2024 18:36

If the tory cnuts somehow manage to stay in power I for one will seriously consider leaving this land, they have all but destroyed it and don’t want to be around whilst they continue to do more of the same

KarenOH · 24/05/2024 18:36

Adios. Will wave them off at the airport.

Amista77 · 24/05/2024 18:37

On the plus side, if all these Tory voters leave, there'll be fewer to keep voting the bleeding lot in and wrecking everything.
Yet another spotlight on the selfishness of Tory voters. Christ.

DodoTired · 24/05/2024 18:38

Yes I do. All highly qualified and high earning.

JLou08 · 24/05/2024 18:38

I think it's more likely that professionals in health, education and social care will leave if Conservatives win.

Amista77 · 24/05/2024 18:39

@whistleblower99 What makes you say that Labour policies are any more likely to be populist than a lot of what Sunak and Johnson have been doing? How would you describe 'Get Brexit done' and 'Stop the boats'?

GivePeaceAChance · 24/05/2024 18:39

Yes we are.
We’ve been discussing this over the years just in case a Govn makes our taxes worse but have decided now is definitely the time as Labour will get in.

The tax saving for us is the main reason. Id rather my kids got our money. Plus moving to a country with only 10% inheritance tax is too good to ignore.

We’ll keep a property in the UK though for our kids, if they need it.

No, but......

Just imagine a Britain where all the flag shaggers, Tommy Robinson lovers, that poundshop Rod Stewart twat who owns Pimlico Plumbers, Mad Lozzer Fox & Julia Hartley Brewer or whaterverhernameis, Katie Hopkins, Reform voters, the Gammonati, golliwog collectors, the entirety of GB News presenters, Carol Malone, Jim Davidson and Dan bloody Wooton JUST FUCK OFF SOMEWHERE ELSE!!

Aaaaaaahhhhhh...........a girl can dream, right?

Spare a moment for those of us who don't even live in England, and still get subjected to this garbage and the corollary.

DodoTired · 24/05/2024 18:42

To add: equally, I know quite a few highly qualified high earners who are planning to leave because of CURRENT policies (so will leave it Tories carry on).

sadly it seems london is on accelerated decline, Ive seen people moving away since 2016 but it’s more and more now

OvalLemon · 24/05/2024 18:43

Yes I know many. There are certain industries that will be affected.

I am one who would probably go abroad but only if Labour stand by their promises to effectively put pay to the industry I work in by extending/increasing taxes and thus causing reduced investment and jobs

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/05/2024 12:32

No. These pricks never follow through on their threats anyway. Where are they going to go, Dubai? If so they are welcome to it.

Edited

And you know OPs brother and brother in law are pricks how ?

Will be affected by what?

Octomingo · 24/05/2024 18:46

No one I know earns enough to even think about emigrating. Most people here tend to want to stay near family anyway. And very few can speak a second language.

The weather is making me want to emigrate though.

“My money is all mine. Mine mine mine.”

the idea of leaving a country because you actively want to avoid financially contributing more to it is wild. Could never be me. I have a conscience.
