Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

1000 replies

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

"Yes probably us. We'd give it time to see how far they go with taxes but dh said he's not continuing running a stressful business if it wasn't worth his while- he'd just get a regular job.. but the truth is we'd leave for a better tax situation. He's in the top 0.1%. We'd keep a little flat here."

"Where are you going then? And why bother keeping a flat?"

Inheritance tax much lower in USA. Not that I'd want to go. Would keep a small flat as have family here and would always want a base here.

I know a fair few doctors in various stages of considering moving abroad - the prospect of a labour government and optimistically hoping it might improve things is keeping them here for now. Hopefully the changes they make will be enough to reduce the flood of doctors leaving. I’m less optimistic than them and handed in my notice as a salaried GP last month.

May I ask why you resigned? Sorry to be nosy, I’m not surprised by anything in your post. I really feel for everyone working in the NHS at current. Overstressed and overworked and battered from all sides.

Ah I see. I didn’t know that about inheritance tax in the US, but I believe all taxes in the US are lower. Although healthcare seems crazy expensive.

General thought form our friends and their young adult's most of whom are very skilled public sector health ( GP, consultants, physios , radiographers) and teachers / academics is that if the tories win they will be off asap. So no to your question the opposite.

whistleblower99 · 24/05/2024 18:08

Not the engineering side of it. There are many areas of cyber. Tell me you don’t know what you’re talking about without telling me. Maybe retrain yourself?

I won't be retraining any time soon as I work in one of the sectors least likely to be replaced.
The engineering side of it will probably be replaced by AI too, if not entirely then largely as many things will be.

PollyPeachum · 24/05/2024 18:15

I doubt many will emigrate over the result in July.
Some may look for contract work in Middle East or elsewhere. But not permanently emigrate.
For Medics and Nurses there has been a steady drift to Australia and Canada. This may accelerate as some areas are not helping recruitment.
Oxford's latest idea in it's battle against the car is to reduce staff parking at John Radcliffe Hospital. Bus service is not good at the moment.
The drift might become a flood.

cremebrulait · 24/05/2024 18:16

The opposite. The only people I know who are freaking out are people who think their taxes might go up. And the only ones I know of do not have voting rights and nor so they care about people who have less.

The brain drain happened with Brexit and IR35

Brexile · 24/05/2024 18:16

ASighMadeOfStone · 24/05/2024 12:37

Nope.
I know a few who would consider returning though.

This. I can't say I was particularly grateful to New Labour at the time, but those were the best years of my life and the best shape the country's ever been in during my lifetime. I'd be back like a shot if I wasn't priced out of a country that (currently) sucks anyway.

You keep telling yourself that. Problem is with AI? Oh wait - it is vulnerable to cyber attack and crime. Who knew?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/05/2024 18:16

All these people going on about leaving.

Why do they think anyone cares? They can’t go soon enough for me.

Mostlycarbon · 24/05/2024 18:17

whistleblower99 · 24/05/2024 17:45

Canada, USA and Singapore mainly. For high earners with talent it is that simple. Global companies will move their engineering and tech jobs abroad to get their best talent if necessary. That’s because not only is the tax situation shit - so are the salaries. It’s a global market. Countries are crying out for engineers and cyber talent as they are so vulnerable without it. They will let global companies shift jobs. It’s already happening and has been for quite some time.

Why on earth would you consider the US? My husband is American and so we could easily emigrate there, but I can't think of anything worse! Terrifying gun laws, terrifying abortion laws, hugely divided society. BIL is a high earner in a similar industry to the ones you mentioned. Crap annual leave, crap work life balance, very easy to be fired. Massive house with a pool but rarely sees much beyond his office.

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:34

Well BIL is in a role where many people go and do a stint in the Middle East as the packages available are lucrative. So it’s more a question of that move being hastened.

👋

StaunchMomma · 24/05/2024 18:17

No, but......

Just imagine a Britain where all the flag shaggers, Tommy Robinson lovers, that poundshop Rod Stewart twat who owns Pimlico Plumbers, Mad Lozzer Fox & Julia Hartley Brewer or whaterverhernameis, Katie Hopkins, Reform voters, the Gammonati, golliwog collectors, the entirety of GB News presenters, Carol Malone, Jim Davidson and Dan bloody Wooton JUST FUCK OFF SOMEWHERE ELSE!!

Aaaaaaahhhhhh...........a girl can dream, right?

The Infamous Ingham Family vloggers have apparently left the country because they are sick of paying taxes and are 'allowed to be rich' in Dubai🙄

I think there is a bit of scaremongering going on. The Conservative party like to make out that anyone that is even remotely we'll off will be taxed to the hilt via Labour. The reality is the very very rich and corrupt will be targeted. Conservatives wouldn't go near the corrupt because so many of them are. The poor have got poorer whilst the very rich have got richer.

Also think some people suppose they are going to be hampered by Labour in terms of business growth /dreams of riches.I can see that it is not as bright and shiny a campaign at the moment as Blair's UK PLC. Labour need to do a better job there.

I'd rather live in a country where we all contribute to a better society.

Salary over here for a position that was recruiting. Middling position. 100k. USA 250K. Same role, same job spec, same everything. Lower taxes. Can’t see why the talented graduates move. Stumped.

GlasgowGal82 · 24/05/2024 18:19

Good riddance if they do. I am sure they are all replaceable. I'd be more worried about business moving abroad, but Brexit was the real driver for that and it's already happened.

Panjandrum123 · 24/05/2024 18:19

Thinking of emigrating but not because of a Labour election win. Partner said he wanted to retire to outside UK. But equally we’re under no illusion that the grass will be greener elsewhere. If we go it will be to look after elderly family, they’ve done a lot for us, so time to give something back.

CuriousGeorge80 · 24/05/2024 18:19

Haven’t read the full thread, but I’m confused - as far as I know the only tax changes Labour have said they plan to make is to add VAT to school fees, remove non-dom tax loops, and tax tech giants more. Last year RR specifically said they weren’t going to increase income tax. So why would people emigrate? People are really going to leave the country because their school fees go up? I’d be more tempted to leave the country because the Tories have fucked us and we are on our knees. I am a high earner and haven’t seen a single labour proposal that will see me lose money, but genuinely interested as to whether I have missed something? (I do suspect they may reverse the NI cuts but that’s not a lot of money either way for you high earners.)

pinkzebra02 · 24/05/2024 18:20

The mindless greed has gone on too long. Public services are basically dust at this point. Everything is being engineered to profit the few and even the few aren't happy as despite their wealth, they still have to live in the same world as all the poor with their misery and despair. Turns out, money isn't everything.

Isitsixoclockalready · 24/05/2024 18:21

SJ1991x · 24/05/2024 17:50

My brother works in tech for a big global business. All we heard about years ago was how all the workers were panicking as all these companies were leaving because Brexit had made their lives too hard.

They’re all still here. All still have jobs. All still the same.

We hear this sort of thing all the time. It’s simply not true. My brother is a high earner, top percentage. He wants Labour to win. As does his wife who earns six figures too.

We’ve heard all of these things before and so far, nothing has happened. Just a few cunty companies who find unscrupulous ways to get out of paying their tax.

It is all bollocks. Like you say, maybe a few will go but ultimately, this is a relatively secure country compared to other parts of the world, relatively stable democracy, relatively sheltered from the worst vestiges of climate change and a country with beautiful countryside. People will try and dress it up that "all their friends are leaving" but even if true, it's anecdotal evidence and nothing more.

Keir Starmer has turned Labour into a safe option for wavering voters and whilst it is a shame to see some of the more progressive policies dropped, it's a price worth paying for the change that this country desperately needs.

And Giles Coren. Hopefully he fucks off by being fired from a canon. Into the sun.

I'm not denying salaries are higher and house prices are often cheaper depending on where you are. BIL and his wife are multi-millionaires. But I still don't think the quality of life is as good. And personally not a fan of lots of aspects of the culture. They have this massive house on a sprawling complex of massive houses and there's just nothing. Not even a corner shop. You have to drive everywhere. Just seems kind of soulless to me.

I think these people just buy / bought additional houses in warmer places, whilst keeping their UK one for their benefit. And why not.
