Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

1000 replies

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

Yes probably us. We'd give it time to see how far they go with taxes but dh said he's not continuing running a stressful business if it wasn't worth his while- he'd just get a regular job.. but the truth is we'd leave for a better tax situation. He's in the top 0.1%. We'd keep a little flat here.

Where are you going then? And why bother keeping a flat?

Where are they going to go? It's not that simple. I'm still waiting for Farage to go after he said he would leave if Brexit wasn't a success....hot air.

Actually, surely some of these Tory die hards should be going after Reform UK who could also take votes away from their party.

Canada, USA and Singapore mainly. For high earners with talent it is that simple. Global companies will move their engineering and tech jobs abroad to get their best talent if necessary. That’s because not only is the tax situation shit - so are the salaries. It’s a global market. Countries are crying out for engineers and cyber talent as they are so vulnerable without it. They will let global companies shift jobs. It’s already happening and has been for quite some time.

I work in the city and that is not my experience at all!

Which one? Moscow? St. Petersburg? Samara?

SaltyGod · 24/05/2024 17:50

I would if the opportunity arose, and hold a passport for another country so it’s possible. This other country has its problems but offers better quality of life and better services for a bit less tax. It’s harder when you have children, if I didn’t I think it would be much more likely.

I know one family who have already left (tech entrepreneur) and another that’s heading back to their home country (pharma). I also know of several single ppl in tech and cyber who are moving but they might have moved anyway

My brother works in tech for a big global business. All we heard about years ago was how all the workers were panicking as all these companies were leaving because Brexit had made their lives too hard.

They’re all still here. All still have jobs. All still the same.

We hear this sort of thing all the time. It’s simply not true. My brother is a high earner, top percentage. He wants Labour to win. As does his wife who earns six figures too.

We’ve heard all of these things before and so far, nothing has happened. Just a few cunty companies who find unscrupulous ways to get out of paying their tax.

Wasityoubecayse · 24/05/2024 17:52

I'm newly qualified in getting people who pay tax and get insults in return to wake up. We are being crushed and noone will listen.

Well it is. I am sure your brother absolutely works in tech, on 6 figures and is having a great time. Reality is - anyone who is in the trade - especially software engineering and cyber knows that’s just fiction. Anyone with real talent is rare and can command huge salaries as they are head hunted globally. Then you have to recruit from abroad to actually find any talent. There are huge shortages - globally and we aren’t competitive. First hand experience. Not my friends, neighbours dog.

Are you accusing me of being a liar? How bizarre. He used to work for big banks but now he works for a smaller one as he can work from home as they no longer live in London. She’s a website designer for a large charity. He has been head hunted multiple times but has zero interest in moving abroad - people don’t just move for money, you do get that right?

Sorry that their life experience is different than yours. I have zero need to lie online. I could easily accuse you of lying too because your experience is different than theirs? If your talent is so sought after, why don’t you go abroad? Take your mates and your neighbours dog too - or are you actually lacking talent? Talented people work here in the U.K. lots of amazing, talented people. Sorry you don’t seem to know any.

SuperSue77 · 24/05/2024 18:02

I can think of quite a few I hope will emigrate!! And I suspect they are all Tory voters. And reference the brain drain - in my opinion, no one with an ounce of intelligence is voting Tory right now, unless they are completely missing compassion and a sense of justice.

Amy3500 · 24/05/2024 18:03

If the Torys get back in I would want to emigrate.

Well the information is out there. We have a really serious shortage of cyber engineers especially. Kind of essential to infrastructure hence the big salaries. Not as common as web designer. The skill sets are more specific. Name your price. Literally ANYONE in the industry knows this as fact. So your post does sound a bit ridiculous - yes.

We are talented yes - hence being in the top 1% of earners.

Mostlycarbon · 24/05/2024 18:05

I would hope a better funded NHS might halt the mass immigration of doctors and teachers to other countries like Australia.

Mechanicalengineer · 24/05/2024 18:05

@SJ1991x you sound verrrry invested in your brothers life 😂 which does sound a bit weird tbh!

@whistleblower99 Talent in the UK is so rare in mechanical engineering too. And if my colleagues move abroad like they say they will then we’re screwed because it’s already difficult to find good employees with the right STEM skills.

I don’t even know who I’m voting for yet but I am definitely worried either way tbh!

Okay stranger on the internet, you can believe that I’m lying. I give zero fucks.

Enjoy your life in Canada with your neighbours dog, I hope the two of you are very happy together. X

Hilarious how many times I've seen the word 'cyber' in a discussion about jobs that aren't at risk of being replaced by AI almost immediately.

I'm considering it. Not because of tax but because the idea of David Lammy as Foreign Secretary fills me with apprehension. We're living in a volatile time and I don't believe this country will become safer.

I would never vote conservative, but David Cameron as foreign secretary was a smart move.

It’s scary times. The issue is already here anyway - it is just will the next government make it worse? Absolute nightmare already.

Farcis · 24/05/2024 18:07

We're in the top 1% and will consider strongly emigrating if the Tories get back in!! We can do so relatively easily given our circumstances, and I have no wish to live another 14 years under that lot.

My friend and her husband bought a house in Spain last year as they don't want to live in the UK if Labour get in. Top 1% earner.

A client of mine did this. But the wealth tax they pay in Spain is horrendous. Hopefully your friend is in a lesser tax region

Of course I’m invested in his life, he’s my brother? We’re really close and we share information about how work is going, and who we’re going to vote for. I didn’t realise that was bizarre.

I fail to see why it’s believable that a poster on here is mega talented and in the top 1% yet my sibling is not.

What a really weird take.

Not the engineering side of it. There are many areas of cyber. Tell me you don’t know what you’re talking about without telling me. Maybe retrain yourself?

PinkDaffodil2 · 24/05/2024 18:08

I know a fair few doctors in various stages of considering moving abroad - the prospect of a labour government and optimistically hoping it might improve things is keeping them here for now. Hopefully the changes they make will be enough to reduce the flood of doctors leaving. I’m less optimistic than them and handed in my notice as a salaried GP last month.

babyproblems · 24/05/2024 18:09

We emigrated because we didn’t like the tories. To a country that was more socialist. It wasn’t the ‘main reason’ we left - I suspect it’s hyperbole if people are saying they would move based only on a GE result. The only person I know who did similar was a wealthy family member who left the UK following Brexit who has large sums invested in foreign currency. We don’t need to stay where we are now, and I might consider coming back if Labour won after a few years of better investment in the public sector. We are frightened by the state of healthcare and dentistry in the UK.. I don’t think I’ll have another baby wherever we live but I definitely wouldn’t give birth in the UK after all these years of underfunding and extreme cuts.

Topseyt123 · 24/05/2024 18:09

No, I don't know any who would actually up sticks and leave if Labour get in.

A lot of people spout forth like this but it's mostly hot air anyway.
