Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

1000 replies

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

What sector is that and how is it specifically thriving as a result of Brexit? I've been looking to interview business owners who can state that business has actively improved because of Brexit (rather than that they've succeeded in minimising losses) but have yet to find someone - maybe you can point me in the right direction then Polishedshoesalways?

Some of the scaremongering - I should say 'attempts' at scare mongering are like deja vu. Totally baseless and they sound increasingly desperate. How anyone could still think that another 5 years of Tory rule is a good idea is mind boggling.

The stench of Tory desperation grows ever more pungent.Grin

Polishedshoesalways · 24/05/2024 17:35

I’m out of here - it’s Friday night and I intend to enjoy it whilst we still can and the dark days of Labour are still a distant pipe dream.

Well the country isn’t bankrupt, it will be under Labour.

Interesting that you say that. Under Labour the UK debt was less than 30% of GDP. Over the last 15 years it has increased to over 100%. Margaret Thatcher would have called that bankrupt.

I didn't call anybody stupid but it was clear what way the 2019 election would go, given the (ridiculous in my view) popularity of Boris and Brexit.

The polls were very consistent too:
https://www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/polls19.html

Expecting a Labour win then was wishful thinking. Not so much now.

Edited

The opinion polls are not reliable, as I said before, we saw that very clearly from the EU Referendum.

I hope the Tories don’t get in and that you’re right, but I will not be sitting back and making that assumption. People have made such assumptions before and it’s gone very differently.

Look at the 2016 Presidential election - everyone thought Clinton had it in the bag. But Trump took it. The general public is a strange beast, you cannot trust what it will do.

Bululu · 24/05/2024 17:36

The people who answered not won’t really know high earners. Also, most will find out when they are gone. We have not been telling others what our plans are. Also, high earners already pay a LOT of tax by PAYE and all the extra bits they keep adding so it is not being greedy it is not being a fucking cash cow. The least you expect is a safe city and services this would not changed with Labour. I keep saying just look at where Labour is already in like the London Mayor. It is pointless to stay here let’s be honest.

Like who? There is a global shortage or haven’t you noticed? It’s astonishing that pp have literally no idea

I am hoping all these people are engineers and cyber security professionals. Name your price as it’s so easy just to fill these skill sets. 🙄

Funny. My parents emigrated in the 1980s, in part because my father hated the Tories with the 🔥 of a thousand suns.

So it probably will happen.

Where did they go, and did they ever come back?

I love the people who think highly qualified professionals bring nothing to the table and are in fact stupid. Any9ne could do their job. I mean the only reason not many are is because there living there best life. Does the idea that people who loose 45% of part of their salary and are the lowest paid in the western world bar southern amd Central Europe have no right to be angry. In the UK a high tax salary is 65k, 65k is about 80k usd to you know that working in a large supermarket as a manager in certain states will earn you three tomes more what is the point. I wish we could have an England with more intelligent people who can acknowledge problems and be civil. Its such a mutual feeling the people who wouldn't miss us would not be missed by us. These are the ingrate who roll into surgery shouting that they have been waiting to long and they pay their taxes. We'll I've been w9rking to l9ng I pay taxes and I'd really love to never see or help these moaners again. We should have an exclusion list for public healthcare it cannot go on.

The Torybot is finished work for the day.

Notonthestairs · 24/05/2024 17:37

6 weeks isnt that distant to be honest.

horseyhorsey17 · 24/05/2024 17:37

PJHarvey · 24/05/2024 17:16

It's just about slinging as much shit as they can, and hoping some people will be gullible enough to believe them.

It does feel like a targeted campaign on here today, sure there must be some rules around that?

Actually right now it's just one person shouting furiously at bins (metaphorically speaking). If that's the best Tory HQ can do then Starmer can probably sleep easy for the next six weeks!

Yeah, if that's the extent of Tory Policy "arguments" we are safe from any more of their crappy regime for at least 4/5 years.

Does anyone on here genuinely believe things are going to improve? Hand on heart.

Just stopping the decline would be good.

ohthejoys21 · 24/05/2024 17:41

Yes probably us. We'd give it time to see how far they go with taxes but dh said he's not continuing running a stressful business if it wasn't worth his while- he'd just get a regular job.. but the truth is we'd leave for a better tax situation. He's in the top 0.1%. We'd keep a little flat here.

Polishedshoesalways · 24/05/2024 17:29

She is going to be arrested soon for fraud, so one less to worry about.

These kind of puerile posts make it hard to engage in any kind of adult way.

Do I think that the country will crash and burn under a Labour government? Under Starmer, absolutely not.

Do I think that the country will have a sudden upturn in fortune on 5th July? No, it will take years to undo the damage that has been done.

Is Starmer competent? Yes, I believe that he is. Time will tell but there is at least cause for optimism after 14 years of Tory misrule.

Are opinion polls reliable? They can't be taken as verbatim but the Tories are in a hole that they don't seem to have any ideas how to dig themselves out of.

Will Labour destroy women's rights? No - total hyperbole.

Time for a change.

Instantcustard · 24/05/2024 17:42

Where are they going to go? It's not that simple. I'm still waiting for Farage to go after he said he would leave if Brexit wasn't a success....hot air.
