Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

1000 replies

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

Competent adults. Angela Raynor? Starmer? Who are you kidding - seriously.

Rayner. It is interesting how her detractors always seem to mispel her last name, as if they are all getting it from the same incorrect source, like the rest of the arse they post.

whistleblower99 · 24/05/2024 17:28

People are mixing up the wealthy with millions who pay little tax to the people who have global careers (so are mobile) and earn a decent wage through PAYE. They are already paying some of the highest marginal taxes in the world and because they are skilled and talented - they can move. Salaries are crap here - even for the higher paid.

Does anyone on here genuinely believe things are going to improve? Hand on heart.

I do think some things will improve. But the money will have to come from somewhere and the squeezed middle is the easy target.

It’s really sad. You actually think Labour are going to do anything other than crash the economy and dismantle the tattered remains of women’s rights?! For fucks sake wake up! They have a far left agenda of destroying what’s left of this country - and that’s it. Nasty politics designed to harm not improve anything.

You are wrong and the idea anything could be more "nasty politics" than the last 14 years of corruption and incompetence is a joke.

The original brain drain was academics leaving for Europe and the US. The new people threatening to leave aren’t particularly brains or skills but mid and upper level business people who can easily be replaced by current and rising subordinates. To the extent that people of value (teachers, medical professionals, academics) were having a hard time they were having a hard time because of Toey politics but no one cared to notice.

This absolutely. We wouldn't be losing the useful just the well paid - different things!

She is going to be arrested soon for fraud, so one less to worry about.

I work in the city and that is not my experience at all!

Even sillier than your last post.

The only consistent messaging I hear is that people really don’t trust Starmer, and don’t like him.

Whereas we trust Sunak, Gove, Braverman, Shapps, Mogg, Cleverley, Keegan, and think they are a fine upstanding bunch of people, right?

A great friend of Margaret Thatcher, who managed to get him an honour despite reservations being voiced by some others.

Do you work in the city of London? It’s thriving in our sector.

Not for much longer…

But the Tories have crashed the economy and fucked up women’s rights - you are aware that all these trans things people are arguing about happened under a Tory government?! Plus they’ve destroyed what was left of the NHS and a billion other things.

Come the fuck on.

They also do pretty important jobs. Engineers, scientists. Try and recruit decent cyber talent in any field in the UK right now. Pretty essential to an economy and society vulnerable to cyber attack.

Well the country isn’t bankrupt, it will be under Labour.

Ah, who told you that fairy tale? Dan Hodges?

LadyRoughDiamond · 24/05/2024 17:32

No, but my husband and I have discussed emigrating if the Tories get in again. He’s a doctor, I’m a teacher and neither of us has the stomach to go through another round of budget cuts.

Oh you're right, every time a job is left vacant it's closed forever as no one else could ever take their place. Everyone knows that.

SJ1991x · 24/05/2024 17:23

I disagree, a lot of people thought Labour would win from where I am. And they weren’t misinformed or stupid either. There was a lot of depression here when Johnson won, people still held out hope that Corbyn could do it.

I think it’s risky to assume Labour are going to walk it. The polls are not historically reliable either. Look at the EU referendum.

I didn't call anybody stupid but it was clear what way the 2019 election would go, given the (ridiculous in my view) popularity of Boris and Brexit.

The polls were very consistent too:

Expecting a Labour win then was wishful thinking. Not so much now.

At least the conservatives understand what trans activists are doing, and moving to prevent the harm, labour are still drinking the trans cool aid !

aramox1 · 24/05/2024 17:33

No. Never heard anything so silly. After Brexit, yes. Lots.

Like who? There is a global shortage or haven’t you noticed? It’s astonishing that pp have literally no idea

What sector is that and how is it specifically thriving as a result of Brexit? I've been looking to interview business owners who can state that business has actively improved because of Brexit (rather than that they've succeeded in minimising losses) but have yet to find someone - maybe you can point me in the right direction then Polishedshoesalways?
