Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

1000 replies

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

My money is on Rishi.

If the Tory party were genuinely worried about high earners leaving they wouldn't have sponsored Brexit - it's certainly done so damage to the City.

I work in the city and that is not my experience at all!

It's just about slinging as much shit as they can, and hoping some people will be gullible enough to believe them.

It does feel like a targeted campaign on here today, sure there must be some rules around that?

The polls tell you enough about what people are thinking. People just aren't buying into it anymore. People just want a change and no-one is expecting any sudden upturn in fortunes. Just a return to decency would be a start. It's going to take a long time to turn things around after the last 14 years.

Polishedshoesalways · 24/05/2024 17:22

Polls have been consistently wrong

Polishedshoesalways · 24/05/2024 17:22

Starmer is not popular, at all.

whistleblower99 · 24/05/2024 17:22

Isitsixoclockalready · 24/05/2024 17:12

When you say "getting nothing back"...they are entitled to the same services as everyone else for the tax that they pay. They live in a relatively secure part of the world (as much as anywhere could be) and they've presumably lived under the same Tory government that we all have for 14 years so it they're fed up - surely that is the responsibility of the current administration?

I'm not doubting for a moment that you know a lot of high earners but that isn't indicative of the opinion of all high earners. Presumably something is keeping them in this country?

I agree, I don't think that it's fair at all to assume that all high earners were born into privilege. That being said, I still don't buy into this narrative that always springs up when there is a hint of a Labour government that all high earners will be waiting at the airport. I especially don't think that Starmer is someone who is going to do anything radical to cause the rich to depart the country.

They’ve already started to leave under a Tory government. Where they take, take, take. Some of the highest marginal tax rates in the world because we have one of the biggest rates of state dependencies in the world. Yet it’s never enough. Such a small minority of workers funding everyone else in a ‘low tax’ county. The exodus has begun. It’s nothing to do with Labour but they won’t make it better.

It is really hard to recruit decent cyber talent in the UK now. Good luck with that when our whole infrastructure relies on it and the taxes of the well paid workers.

horseyhorsey17 · 24/05/2024 17:22

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 24/05/2024 17:19

Oh, but you will. That's the problem. If enough of them go, then you most definitely, definitely will. As I've already said, they are the ones who pay for all the stuff. Removing several hundred thousand high earning net contributors from the system doesn't suddenly catapult people in menial jobs into better ones. It just puts more of a hole in the finances and shifts the tax burden on the people who are left. And increasingly, we have a country more and more full of low earners who, as hard as they might work, are net beneficiaries only.

Edited

Sure, sure.

I mean I actually talk to high earning business people and this isn't what I'm hearing at all but you do you.

Polishedshoesalways · 24/05/2024 17:23

The only consistent messaging I hear is that people really don’t trust Starmer, and don’t like him.

SJ1991x · 24/05/2024 17:23

PJHarvey · 24/05/2024 17:20

Nobody informed thought Labour would walk it in 2019, it was very obvious from the polls and the respective popularity of the two party leaders that Labour would lose.

2024 is very different.

I disagree, a lot of people thought Labour would win from where I am. And they weren’t misinformed or stupid either. There was a lot of depression here when Johnson won, people still held out hope that Corbyn could do it.

I think it’s risky to assume Labour are going to walk it. The polls are not historically reliable either. Look at the EU referendum.

Does anyone on here genuinely believe things are going to improve? Hand on heart.

It won't be easy for Labour to deal with the absolute shitshow the Tories have left behind, but I am looking forward to some competent adults being in charge.

Should massively improve the UK's image on the world stage too, getting rid of those belligerant donkeys with a superiority complex.

Not at this stage. The Tories have nothing left in the tank. People just want a change of guard now. I've never seen a country so demoralised.

pinkzebra02 · 24/05/2024 17:24

Just goes to show the short-sightedness of some people that their only concern is tax.
Are they not bothered about the state of the country and public services? You would arguably end up paying more than your tax under the current government on things like private healthcare because you can't be seen properly, repairs to your car after it's been thumped over enough potholes etc etc. Ik.not sure whether they're incredibly selfish or just thick, possibly both I imagine.

Competent adults. Angela Raynor? Starmer? Who are you kidding - seriously.

Telegraph message board is my guess.

I don’t like Starmer. But I would rather have 100 Starmer than any member of the Tory party.

For me, it’s a case of the lesser of two evils. The the Tories are insanely fucking evil.

I hope Mogg is banished from parliament. But he’s the type of twat who will end up in Lords, along with the pig fucker.

At least I can spell ‘border’.

Byronada · 24/05/2024 17:11

I'm considering it. Not because of tax but because the idea of David Lammy as Foreign Secretary fills me with apprehension. We're living in a volatile time and I don't believe this country will become safer.

Compared to previous Foreign Secretary Alexander de Piffle?

Or sacked Foreign Secretary Braverman?

Exactly. All this thread is telling me that some people are horrible, selfish arseholes who want to hoard their wealth like dragons and couldn't give a fuck about anyone else. That's exactly why the rest of us are voting the Tories out.

How is Starmer, a former head of public prosecutions, not competent.

You are sounding increasingly desperate. You'll be telling us he has sex with cats next.

It’s really sad. You actually think Labour are going to do anything other than crash the economy and dismantle the tattered remains of women’s rights?! For fucks sake wake up! They have a far left agenda of destroying what’s left of this country - and that’s it. Nasty politics designed to harm not improve anything.
