Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

1000 replies

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

So 14 years of Tory rule is driving the millionaires away.

Edited

Oh most definitely. The Tories haven’t made Britain a particularly attractive prospect at all. Keir Starmer is well aware that he needs to reverse this trend, hence why I think he’s going to be a lot more centre-right and pro-business than many expect. He’s been actively courting business.

"I am here to say that Labour is ready, is ready to partner with you because we're not just a pro-business party, we are a party proud to be pro-business,"

https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/labour-is-ready-be-your-partner-uks-starmer-courts-business-2022-12-08/

Imo it’s not going to be the ‘eat the rich’ frenzy some are fearing, and others desperately wanting.

Quite a lot of it has already happened "dear" like

sky high taxes
Failing services getting worse
Capital flight
Exploding debt
Total fiscal incompetence as their record already proves.

Those situations came from the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Not fiscal incompetence.

What we need now more than ever is a booming economy and a full recovery - unlikely under a Labour government known for their disgraceful track record on spending and spending money we just don’t have on pointless vanity projects.

My friend and her husband bought a house in Spain last year as they don't want to live in the UK if Labour get in. Top 1% earner.

@ukku unless they are EU citizens, I don't think they'll be entitled to live in Spain

Omg these threads are getting ridiculous now 🙄

Starmer is terrifyingly incompetent. He has no backbone whatsoever- how on earth is he going to do anything of interest?

Otherstories2002 · 24/05/2024 16:47

It’s likely that we would remove ourselves from the UK tax bracket by husband having his employment location changed.

We always get this. They never actually go though - they just whine a lot.

Do you have anything to contribute or are you just going to rant incoherently?

Is that you Boris?

This is hilarious. People stayed when the Tories trashed the economy for Brexit & the Truss fiasco & now they are planning to leave when all the indicators are that the city and financial institutions are at least comfortable with a Labour government? Proof that rich people are not necessarily cleverer that other people....

Yeah like PPE contracts worth millions of pounds for their mates, for useless PPE. And the Garden Bridge project which saw millions of £ spent on, well no one seems to know, but no bridge was built. And yet more millions spent on HS2, only for our to grind to a halt halfway through. Nightingale hospitals built, not used. Oh wait, all of this and more, happened under the fiscally responsible Tories.

And no I know some properly rich people who own extremely expensive property & are high earners, several with foreign passports and they are nearly all voting labour & none planning to leave.

It depends what they do really. If they've got any sense, they won't hammer higher earnings with tax increases. We've already lost far too many high earners and need to hang on to the ones we have left. IR35 did a hell of a lot of damage in the last 2/3 years with mobile high earners, particularly IT consultants, doctors, etc., moving abroad. We've already got Tyson Fury said to be relocating to the tax haven of the Isle of Man to avoid paying UK tax on his earnings/income. The tax burden has to be spread more evenly, not targeted on high earners under some deluded politics of envy mentality.

VAT on school fees
sky high taxes
Failing services getting worse
A civil war when they rejoin the EU via the back door
Bonfire of women’s rights
David Lammy putting our global security at serious risk
Capital flight
Exploding debt
A deep Recession
A non existent immigration policy that sees uncontrolled masses arriving
Far left quietly taking over
Housing market crash as country loses the confidence of business
Total fiscal incompetence as their record already proves.

Shall I go on?

Only to provide evidence and forecasting credentials if you will.

Ex DPP, a Knight of the realm for services to law and criminal justice. But you find him to be "terrifyingly incompetent ". Where's your evidence for this?

horseyhorsey17 · 24/05/2024 16:54

Nobody's going to care much if people who obviously go out of their way to avoid tax end up leaving the country - except probably the private schools. Reading Mumsnet, you'd think most of the posters send their kids to private schools. Most people don't, and most people don't really care what happens to private schools or the kids who go there either. They're more concerned about putting food on the table and paying their bills.

Part of their problem is equating rich = intelligence. 'I'm a high earner so I must be SO much smarter than the average earner'. Erm no, chances are you had an incredibly comfortable start in life and reap the benefits of a stable life which was 9 times out of 10 provided for you. They genuinely believe that the average person is incapable of doing their job.

So what are the Tories spending all the money they are borrowing on then? I'd love to know, because they are bankrupting the UK, have turned it into a fiscal basket case, and still UK-controlled public service is absolutely dreadful. Might it be pointless vanity projects, like HS2, Aircraft Carriers, Flights to Rwanda?

And which "Labour Government" are you talking about precisely? There hasn't been a Labour Government since 2010, prior to that it was the mid-70's. So which of these Governments are you suddenly expecting to reappear, given that most of the people involved are either out of politics altogether, or dead?

This "Labour ruins the economy" is an utterly baseless trope, yet it's being trotted out yet again.

Oh shit, Tyson Fury is leaving due to Tory tax policy? What will we do for our supply of sexist comments and who can replace his skills in er.....hitting people very hard? Now we're fucked.

Actually no, business is well aware that the next government will be a Labour one, and they've been lobbying/prepared themselves accordingly.,
