Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

1000 replies

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

I'm so confused by your post is that not what I'm saying. Where GPS have left on there exit statements they are stating tax and services. If Labour pushes a high tax policy people will leave. Its nothing to so with politics as usual.

Mnetcurious · 24/05/2024 16:20

op hasn’t explained WHY they think they’ll have to leave the country when Labour get in though, despite being asked.

VAT on school fees
sky high taxes
Failing services getting worse
A civil war when they rejoin the EU via the back door
Bonfire of women’s rights
David Lammy putting our global security at serious risk
Capital flight
Exploding debt
A deep Recession
A non existent immigration policy that sees uncontrolled masses arriving
Far left quietly taking over
Housing market crash as country loses the confidence of business
Total fiscal incompetence as their record already proves.

Shall I go on?

pinkzebra02 · 24/05/2024 16:26

Will they hell. Emigrating to another country usually requires knowing another language/ putting up with customs you don't necessarily agree with or relate to/ having very good skills in a specific area/ upheaval of many parts of your life. 9/10 high earners are from a very privileged background and I dare say they'd miss the pampered life they have here.

LilacK · 24/05/2024 16:27

Ah, good luck with that now that Brexit has trapped us here.

FancyAnxiety · 24/05/2024 16:27

Blackcats7 · 24/05/2024 12:32

I certainly know a few tory supporters I wish would emigrate but nobody who plans to go at all.

This 😆

Pampered life? Is that a joke??!!

Wasityoubecayse · 24/05/2024 16:29

Omg guys the majority of the western world is English speaking. England has only 66 million people usa 360 Scandinavia about 100 mill depending on countries included. There really isn't an issue migrating . Singapore Malaysia Thailand Japan are offering visa to qualified people. Eye Dr's specifically in some countries will be accepted without language skills. Wake up for fsake.

sweetsardineface · 24/05/2024 16:30

I’m so happy not to know anyone who has said this.

p.s. I am a higher rate tax payer and think we should pay more tax.

frankentall · 24/05/2024 16:31

InterIgnis · 24/05/2024 16:02

That’s been happening too. The UK has the third highest rate of millionaires emigrating in the world, and they are indeed taking businesses and investment with them. It isn’t as simple as ‘oh well, someone else will take their place!’ if people can’t afford to invest in a sector, gain the necessary skills, and/or consider the pay off to be worth the amount of work required . Those that do will also be the ones that are will be lured abroad by countries offering better wages, tax policies, and quality of life.

You don’t have to like those leaving in order to recognise that this is a problem. Like it or not they’re fine and are going to continue to be fine, it’s those yelling ‘good riddance’ that are going to be impacted by this.

So 14 years of Tory rule is driving the millionaires away.

HRTQueen · 24/05/2024 16:31

Yes and let’s see how many actually will

we always hear this threat every single election

there was going to be a mass exodus of Labour won in 2005 yet it strangely didn’t happen 🙄

Notreat · 24/05/2024 16:32

No but if they want to go they are welcome. They are being ridiculous but it's up to them. It certainly wouldn't worry me

Polishedshoesalways · 24/05/2024 16:33

The question is why on earth would they stay?

Mnetcurious · 24/05/2024 16:33

These are not necessarily the op’s relatives’ reasons though -she’s said they’re not wealthy so eg private school fees won’t be the reason.

Many of your “reasons” are pure speculation or just inaccurate also. The tories have had 14 years to improve services and they’ve only run them into the ground, actually it’s more likely that Labour will improve them.

So a load of lies and bollocks along with things the Tories have already done then.

No, Labour have already said there isn’t the money to increase funding or did you miss that?

This is all to come dear. It’s going to be horrendous for everyone- back to the 1970s we go. Why would anyone that is successful and have options worldwide stay here?

Wasityoubecayse · 24/05/2024 16:37

Mate I second that. Can you imagine a retired middle class prick, looking at someone who works 20 hour shifts and saying with the upmost confidence they deserve less. I wish they could leave. Imagine England without the insufferable, it would be heaven. Its about policy not politics. Labour need to set out their stall as does anybody else whose got the thick skin and brains to unpick this mess. If that person was a monster raving lunat8c they would STILL get my vote. This on a side note has been a lovely sick day, its actually good to talk. I didn't realise how angry i was . Its given me perspective I really am worried to. Thank you thread! Thank you OP! To the teacher look up denmark norway or swden there's opening for English teachers pays good people are........very scadanavian you will love or hate that :)

Polishedshoesalways · 24/05/2024 16:38

This is going to end in anarchy - least of all the fury of the voters who thought they were voting for something better only to discover things are even worse.

badatdecisions · 24/05/2024 16:40

Well, if they see themselves as Tories then they must also be buried under mountains of national pride at how world-beating Britain is (including having the most nuclear reactive sea in the world because of all the Sellafield shite that's dumped into it). So surely such a small thing wouldn't persuade them to go to a horrible foreign country where people speak inferior languages and have functioning public services, human rights and other such nonsense.

InchesOnTheDoorFrame · 24/05/2024 16:40

p.s. I am a higher rate tax payer and think we should pay more tax.

Someone earning £125000 will pay almost £50k between tax and NI. How much more should they pay? I really don’t think they should pay anymore.

Money being mismanaged in organisations like the NHS is the problem, not lack of funding.

pinkzebra02 · 24/05/2024 16:40

Polishedshoesalways · 24/05/2024 16:28

Pampered life? Is that a joke??!!

Do you think that as soon as high earners leave the country no one else will be able to take their place? Most of their lives are so through nepotism or having more of an advantage to begin with. They would not be missed if they went. And most of them won't go as they have an easy life here. Emigrating anywhere is not piss-easy. Having a privileged life means you are more used to having things easy and therefore would fins it harder to adapt. 'Oh boo hoo I pay so much tax I can't afford to privately educate my kids'. A grip is needed, many state schools are actually better than private, since they are not profit generating businesses.

decionsdecisions62 · 24/05/2024 16:41

Good riddance to the selfish shits I say! Let them emigrate.

Quite a lot of it has already happened "dear" like

sky high taxes
Failing services getting worse
Capital flight
Exploding debt
Total fiscal incompetence as their record already proves.

Wasityoubecayse · 24/05/2024 16:42

What the hell are you on! People leaving are middle class h8ghly qualified with more than 7 years experience. We will not be able to backfill this problem. It needs to be addressed. The delusion is crazy.

No, I mean two people is not indicative of a trend. The financial markets don't appear spooked by the idea of a labour government although I'm quite expecting plenty of fear mongering from desperate right wing media trying to keep their friends in power
