How confident do you feel that the Tories will lose?

1000 replies

pinklite · 23/05/2024 23:04

Do you feel confident? Going off what I see on social media, there is no way that they don't lose by a massive majority.

However I worry that this is just a small snapshot of the public and is not an accurate representation.

It really wouldn't surprise me if we don't have a Labour majority.

What does everybody else think the result will be?

herecomes - exactly! And people hated them for it, and yet here you are doing the same thing to me! This is why Labour is so often accused of hypocrisy.

Shinyandnew1 · 28/05/2024 10:35

I think 18 year olds doing 12 days of voluntary work is a great idea!

Its 24 days of forced unpaid work, at weekends when most of them already have to got to work to actually earn money.

Meadowtrees · 28/05/2024 10:39

Loads of people work and volunteer.

I don’t think pointing out that what’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander is hypocrisy.

Meadowtrees · 28/05/2024 10:39

Loads of people work and volunteer.

They volunteer through choice. That makes a significant difference. Their parents won't be fined if they can't complete their agreed hours & it won't impact which job they are entitled to apply for.

Meadowtrees · 28/05/2024 10:46

Blossom - I wasn’t born in the miners crisis, let alone telling them to get on their bikes! Could you explain your sauce/goose analogy in this context, I don’t think I’ve understood what you mean? Or are you saying that it’s all my fault somehow?

Notonthestairs · 28/05/2024 10:48

From 2022 -

A government minister has suggested that people struggling with the cost of living could take on more hours or move to a better-paid job.

I was going to vote Tory* until I read this thread. Now I'm not because I don't want to be associated with hyperbolic head-the-balls who have zero self awareness, a poor grasp on facts, and such a snowflake mentality they need to tone police and try to silence others.Hmm

*Not really, I couldn't vote Tory even if I wanted to.

I think I’ll vote Conservative just to piss off the people on this thread.

It’s nothing to do with you personally. If people lose their jobs it’s extremely likely that they’re going to need to make some changes to their life to get another one. As someone who commuted 50 miles each way by car and for 90 minutes each way on the train for most of my working life, I have little sympathy for someone complaining that they can’t get a job on their doorstep. Welcome to the real world.

herecomesthesun24 · 28/05/2024 10:56

@Meadowtrees no ‘I’ am not doing the same thing to you as the Tories did to the miners, stop the hyperbole. This will NOT be the end of all private schools. There is a huge demand for teachers specialised in working with SEN children, it’s a very important job. I am sorry if you lose your current position but there will be other job opportunities for you in that field.

And FYI I won’t be voting Labour as they won’t get in my area. However, I am very much hoping that we will get a change in MP to Lib Dem. It’s been Tory held for over 100years where I live & my local MP was contemptible in his support for the party line while the Government were attempting to gaslight the whole country. Yes I want to see them out and no I’m not a hypocrite!

Be sure to let us know once you do, so we can feel sufficiently pissed off. I wouldn't want to miss that.Grin

Lottelenya · 28/05/2024 10:58

@Katypp spiteful ? Like the current incumbents have been towards the poor or disabled or migrants ? A little more than spiteful. So much hyperbole.
Most of the population cannot afford an extra £15k + a year on private education and cope with CoL crisis and increased interest rates. The average wage is £30k. You are in cloud cuckoo land. Most people wouldn’t be able to afford it if they sold up to live in a tent.
Sadly that’s not to say some financially struggling voters won’t be taken in by the cries of despair of some these posters playing hard done by. The country is in this mess because of poor governance by the Tories. Blame them maybe.

Lottelenya · 28/05/2024 11:00

@AlltheFs most of the private school paying posters on here probably did. Why buck the trend 😂

Ah ha @Blossomtoes - so, because YOU had to do long commutes for work, everyone else has to right... ?

I have had 9 jobs in my 36 or so years of working. Not ONE has ever been more than 10-12 miles away from where I lived. Same with DH. 5 jobs since we met 30-ish years ago, and all within 10-12 miles of where we live.

If people want to work 30, 40, 50 miles (or more) away from home, and spend half their life commuting then crack on, but don't expect everyone else to do it. Like fuck would I ever be commuting 100 miles a day. NO-ONE should have to do that to keep a bloody roof over their/their family's head!

It is NOT 'in the real world' for people to travel 100 miles a day (or more) to work and back. Almost everyone I know works within 10 to 15 miles of where they live. Yes, even the people with important, well-paid, professional jobs!!!

That rant’s based on something I didn’t even say. 🤷‍♀️

Pretty much 'get on your bike, and leave your home town to find work! I DID!'

Charming! 🙄 I have heard someone say that before! Hmm

And Conservative Party chairman Jake Berry

I didn’t. Try reading what I wrote, not what you think I wrote.

Notonthestairs · 28/05/2024 11:08

Appearing on Sky News on Sunday, Mr Berry said: "People know that when their bills arrive, they can either cut their consumption or they can get a higher salary, higher wages, go out there and get that new job.

I did respond to what you wrote. HTH.

Katypp · 28/05/2024 11:09

@Lottelenya I did not say the policy was spiteful. I never would because I believe people who genuinely think that politicians of either colour are 'out to get' people is naive and childish.
So are we saying that anything a lot of the population can't afford should be stopped or discouraged?
Holidays
Running a car
Buying a house
Some people choose private education over and above all of the above.
I have no skin in the game as my kids are pretty much finished in education. But gleefully looking forward to disrupting many children's education and putting jobs at risk does not feel very 'caring left' to me.

Honestly some of these comments are getting ridiculous. No-one is stopping private education, but as when using other private businesses, VAT will be added. HTH.
