How confident do you feel that the Tories will lose?

1000 replies

pinklite · 23/05/2024 23:04

Do you feel confident? Going off what I see on social media, there is no way that they don't lose by a massive majority.

However I worry that this is just a small snapshot of the public and is not an accurate representation.

It really wouldn't surprise me if we don't have a Labour majority.

What does everybody else think the result will be?

I’m a leftie woman. She’s not putting down women’s right. Our definition of them is somewhat broader than yours.

Definitions aren't supposed to be broad, they're supposed to be meaningful.

It's not hate to say that women don't have penises, people with penises don't belong in women's spaces or sports, and that women should be allowed to say no to people with penises even if it makes the people with penises feel sad.

Jesus wept, how has it come to this?

How, literally HOW has this become a controversial thing to say?

What a time to be alive.

lol did i say that was how they were being hateful?

yes, they suddenly made that decision when they needed a convenient new scapegoat. Can't be brown people now, what with the PM not being White... Benefits 'scroungers' has been overdone. Got to always have someone new to hate.

You are at least right on that point, though not on much else.

The Tories presided over the misogynistic shitshow of the last decade or so. Karen White was able to rape women in a women's prison because they didn't care enough to stop him. It only became a priority once they started tanking in the polls. They're untrustworthy,.

You know what, if you really think the number of women who will vote purely on "the trans issue" is so low, why do you care?

Let women vote for that reason if they want to, it won't affect the result will it?

i was replying to a comment someone said about it and agreed that the echo chamber of MN may make some believe its higher but in reality, its not THE issue for most that it is for you.

What is the purpose of the word "women" if it includes male people?

What group of people are we describing and why?

So it's not worth you getting annoyed about, is it.

nopenotplaying · 24/05/2024 16:34

I honestly have no idea who to vote for. They are all equally bad. Unless anyone can convince me otherwise?

then why question me? you were the one who replied to my post. I'm allowed to make an observation, you were the one who replied to me about that.

Maybe give your head a wobble and experience other views besides the MN hive mind, might make you understand someone talking about something isn't then "getting annoyed" about it.

What a time to be alive.

A time when councils might collapse and anarchy takes hold. That’s how things are looking atm.

Well exactly.

So why are Labour indulging this nonsense??

It would actually be perfectly legitimate for them to say, "Sorry trans people, we love and value and support you but the country is on fire and we have to fix it and to do that we have to get elected, and women have penises just isn't a vote winner."

bozzabollix · 24/05/2024 16:44

So the biggest issue in the UK is theoretically bloke sticking on a skirt, saying he’s trans all for the purpose of going into a toilet and raping someone?

I obviously live in a strange place because we do have unisex toilets in certain trendier places and I know that nobody has had anything mildly newsworthy happen to them in one. I know that because a public fart would be reported here because not much happens.

On Mumsnet this is a massive issue, elsewhere nobody really talks about it, it’s not having an effect on their lives. Whereas shit like bad maternity services has a massive effect, my argument is vote for the government who’s more likely to get that public service stuff done successfully rather than divert to what is not really happening.

Speak to people in real life, how many people have actually been assaulted by a trans person that you know? How many have been raped or assaulted by non trans heterosexual men? I know a few of the latter, and it’s not been difficult for them to do, it hasn’t taken wearing a skirt or entering a female only space. Our rape conviction stats are pathetic, maybe something could be done about that as opposed to getting upset about trans women.

It’s the same old fear mongering that has always happened with minorities. And I hate it, these people have had a rough time and yet the boot goes in even more. It shows absolutely zero empathy to think that we need to reverse any tolerance towards trans people, because it’s a tough road.

SleepingisanArt · 24/05/2024 16:44

I'm not confident at all! In this area Labour didn't even stand at the last election because they lost their deposit in the one before! All of my neighbours are Tory voters and likely to do so again, especially those with family in Wales who tell you at every available opportunity how bad it has been under Labour in Wales! We had a decent Liberal Democrat candidate who came 2nd last time but I don't know what will happen this time.

I also think a lot of voters might not like the government but are happy with their local MP who is a Conservative.... (Friends in Dover were furious when their MP defected to Labour because 'if we'd wanted a Labour MP we'd have voted for one'....) We might be heading for the dreaded Hung Parliament......

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/05/2024 16:47

This is the way of politics.. Tories got in again because people were sick of how awful Labour were, labour will now get in because of how awful Tories are... and this is our political landscape...

Quite. I find it hard to imagine actually having a party I actively want to vote for, rather than one I think might be a bit less awful than the others. The way things stand, I don't even have that, so I'll be spoiling my ballot paper. I think Labour will win though. Lib Dems will win in my constituency as usual.

It’s not a significant vote loser either. It’s fiddling while Rome burns.

No, the issue is politicians pretending that people can change sex, or that they don't know what a woman is, in order to appease deranged activists. I don't trust people who will tell absolutely blatant lies about something as fundamental as this. And no, I don't trust the Tories either.

Day 0 - Rishi the drowned rat with 'Things can only get better' blaring in the background
Day 1 - Rishi asks a bunch of Welsh people if they're looking forward to a football tournament that they didn't qualify for and plants Tory councillors in the audience to ask him friendly questions "Mr Prime Minister, how do you get your hair to be so shiny?" Etc.

I'm not sure he'll stand 6 weeks of this. Perhaps it is Rishi who will shag the pig on TV.

Day 2: Rishi visits the Titanic Quarter in Belfast and is asked if he is captaining a sinking ship.

I've been a Labour voter my whole life but really don't feel I can vote for them right now after all of this...

This is why I will probably hold my nose and vote Tory. I can only imagine how much worse the trans madness would have been if we'd have had labour governments over the last 15 years. They all disgust me though.

It's starting to feel like that. I'm wondering what they've got planned for the next few days:
Butchers: Are you up for the chop?
Job centre: Getting your CV in?
Supermarket: Need help packing your bags?

Etc

OK. So someone changes sex. In my mind it has absolutely chuff all to do with me, they do exactly what they want with their own body. Happy to recognise pronouns if it makes them happy, it’s not a big deal. It’s their thing.

Why is it such a big deal to other people?

The trans woman I knew years back had from being a tiny child felt female, she felt all wrong in her own body, it caused years of turmoil which was then fixed. Why couldn’t it be fixed?

I feel blessed not to have had any significant issues over gender and identity, I’m glad I don’t know how it feels to grow up feeling wrong in your own body. How shit to want to deny someone something that really is life saving? Because it’s a rebirth into a life that feels correct.

And I’m not a deranged activist, I’ve just talked to someone who explained how difficult it all was and felt great empathy.

A vulnerable minority isn't something you identify as.

Men aren't a vulnerable minority.

Don't get me wrong, I support people's rights to be as gender non conforming as they like. But if you are recognisably male and you have the option to just dress like a man and go back to being treated like a man with male privilege, are you really a vulnerable minority? And if you can get women sacked for saying you're not a woman, again, are you really a vulnerable minority?

I don't think you are. And I really object to this emotionally loaded language.
